Billy the Kid & the Murder of Morris Bernstein
Billy the Kid & the Murder of Morris Bernstein By Jerry Klinger An Eastern city Jew goes West in search of a mystery Morris Bernstein was born in London, Feb. 11, 1856. He was murdered at the South Fork of the Tularosa River, near the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation Agency at Blazer's Mill, New Mexico, August 5, 1878. I first learned of the murder of Bernstein in a history of the Lincoln County Wars in which Billy the Kid figured prominently. Frontier New Mexico in the 1870's was populated by colorful figures that did not belie the imagery of the American Western movies, Hoodoo Brown - also known as Hyman G. Neal, William Bonny - Billy the Kid, Morris Bernstein, a.k.a. Maurice J. Bernstein. My wife and I went to Lincoln, New Mexico for a weekend at a lovely bed and breakfast, five star cooking, lounging and history savoring. We were going to stay at the Ellis Country Store. Yes, Billy the Kid did sleep there once is their motto. My wife was going to lounge. I was going to find out what was a nice Jewish boy doing on the frontier, in the middle of a war between ranchers and merchants over power and control, getting himself shot. Morris came to Santa Fe, N.M., in the spring of 1873. He found work as a bookkeeper with a Jewish merchant network under the Seligman brothers. Jews had first come to New Mexico, probably, as hidden Jews in the 1600's with the Spanish explorers and settlers. Today it is very popular for New Mexican's to discover their "converso" origins. -

At Country Music's Newest Festival, Host Dierks Bentley Lets Fans Curate Their Own Experience
(9.3.2019) - https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/music/2019/09/03/dierks-bentley-seven-peaks- music-festival-luke-bryan-maren-morris-jon-pardi/2199596001/ AT COUNTRY MUSIC'S NEWEST FESTIVAL, HOST DIERKS BENTLEY LETS FANS CURATE THEIR OWN EXPERIENCE BUENA VISTA, Colo. — It is 4:20 p.m. on a Saturday, and Dierks Bentley isn’t slotted to headline his three-day Seven Peaks Music Festival until the next night. The country singer is on stage anyway. He will spend the weekend trying to be anywhere his fans are, and this toasty afternoon in the shadow of Mount Princeton is no different. “Happy 4:20, if you’re into that kind of thing,” he tells the crowd. “Make this whatever you want it to be. We’re just following your lead.” Bentley hosted his second Seven Peaks camping and music festival in the remote mountain town over Labor Day weekend. Buena Vista is in an area of routes and passes, more than an hour from the nearest interstate. There’s no fast food, and Walmart is about 30 minutes away. But country fans — and country headliners — showed up in droves to relish music and outdoor adventure in the The eclectic lineup was uniquely Bentley — a reflection of his love for roots, bluegrass and contemporary country. The roster allowed for celebration of '90s icons, discovery of new acts and singalong sessions with today's most noted contemporary stars. In addition to Bentley, fans also saw Luke Bryan, Maren Morris, Jon Pardi, Travis Tritt, Tracy Lawrence, Diamond Rio, Mitchell Tenpenny, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Rita Wilson, Rapidgrass, HARDY, Caylee Hammack, Steep Canyon Rangers, Tenille Townes and more. -

Who's Got the Biggest Cume of All? Swift Closes
June 7, 2010 Issue 195 Who’s Got The Biggest Cume Of All? Country programmers and sales staffs have been absolutely giddy in recent years as they’ve watched cumes for most Country radio stations double once Arbitron’s PPM becomes currency in a market and replaces the diary. (We’ll fight over TSL’s plunge from diary to PPM another time.) Prior to PPM’s arrival, no Country outlet had ever cracked the one million listener barrier. Only a handful of stations exceeded 500,000 cumers. Now this format boasts four or five stations at one million plus on a regular basis, with another handful posting audience levels in excess of 900,000. The exuberance is, of course, tempered by the fact that all of the other format cumes have ballooned as well. Proving that size does indeed matter, the top 23 cuming stations in America are in either New York or Los Angeles. The You Belong With Me: WKLB/Boston’s Ginny Rogers (l) and daughter top five cuming stations are: Lauren bookend Taylor Swift in the vibe room backstage Saturday (6/5). 1.
