1 /32 0.6 Mariah Carey, James Packer 'trying to work it out,' says rep (4.23/5) LOS ANGELES, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Mariah Carey and James Packer reportedly haven't closed the door on their relationship yet.

The 46-year-old singer's rep responded to rumors Thursday that Carey and Packer ended their engagement due to tensions over the star's forthcoming reality show, Mariah's World , and extravagant spending.

Carey's spokesperson told Entertainment Tonight that Carey and Packer haven't seen each other since they had a fight during their trip to Greece in September. The pair plan to release an official statement once they determine their future.

"The fight was not because of any cheating allegations or excessive spending by Mariah," the rep said, adding that Packer is "one of the most successful businessmen in the world. "

"They are trying to work it out," the spokesperson revealed. "Right now, they're not sure if they will stay together. "

Packer's rep told People that the numerous rumors surrounding the split are "simply untrue. " One such report is that Carey ended the relationship after Packer failed to be "present for Mariah or her family. "

"[It's] typical Mariah to just twist things that don't sound good to her. They split because she has issues," a source close to Packer told the magazine.

"James is definitely an oddball, but a brilliant, great guy. To put her issues on James is ridiculous," the insider added. "[They] definitely won't be getting back together now. "

Carey and Packer got engaged in January after less than a year of dating. The singer, who was previously married to actor Nick Cannon , told E! 2 /32 3.3 US STOCKS-Wall St rises amid robust earnings, GDP data (1.19/5) By Yashaswini Swamynathan Oct 28 (Reuters) - Wall Street rose on Friday as robust economic data shone light on the strength of the U. S. economy, while upbeat results from Alphabet and Chevron offset the decline in health stocks and Amazon. The U. S. Commerce Department's first estimate on gross domestic product showed the U. S. economy grew at its fastest pace in two years. GDP increased at a 2.9 percent annual rate in the third quarter, helped by a surge in exports. While the report supports the case for an interest rate hike, the Federal Reserve is unlikely to make a move at its meeting next week, as it falls just days ahead of the U. S. presidential election. However, the odds of a rate increase in December stand at 74.2 percent, according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool. The main focus of the market remains on corporate results as investors hope the latest quarter snaps a year-long earnings recession. Nearly 73 percent of the S&P 500 companies that have reported, have issued profits above Wall Street expectations, setting the stage for the benchmark index to post an overall earnings growth of 3.0 percent for the third quarter, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Alphabet's 2.1 percent rise and Chevron's 4.6 percent jump on upbeat earnings buoyed sentiment. The stocks gave the biggest boost to the S&P 500. On the flip side, Amazon.com was set for its worst day in nearly nine months, falling 4 percent to $785.53 after the online retailer warned that heavy investments in the crucial holiday quarter would hurt profits. The stock was the top drag on the S&P and the Nasdaq. "(Today's movement) is a tug-of-war among many things," said Brad McMillan, chief investment officer at Commonwealth Financial Network. "It's the certainty that earnings are improving versus the ongoing uncertainty from the election and the Fed. " At 12:30 a.m. ET (1630 GMT), the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 79 points, or 0.43 percent, at 18,248.68. The S&P 500 was up 6.93 points, or 0.32 percent, at 2,139.97 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 12.84 points, or 0.25 percent, at 5,228.81. The Dow is the only index to likely end the week on a positive note. Ten of the 11 major S&P sectors were higher, while the healthcare sector lost 2.02 percent - set for its worst month since January. Amgen plunged 10.4 percent to $144.17 after the world's largest biotechnology company reported sales for its flagship drug that disappointed investors and analysts. Mastercard touched a record high of $107.65 after the payments processor reported a 21.2 percent jump in quarterly profit. The results also lifted shares of larger rival Visa. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the NYSE by 1,643 to 1,200. On the Nasdaq, 1,509 issues rose and 1,151 fell. The S&P 500 index showed nine new 52-week highs and nine new lows, while the Nasdaq recorded 39 new highs and 102 new lows. 3 /32 3.6 Wales quartet Warburton, Lydiate, Lee and Amos sign new dual contracts (1.05/5) Wales internationals Sam Warburton, Dan Lydiate, Samson Lee and Hallam Amos have signed extensions to their national dual contracts.

The players, who each represent one of the four Welsh regions, have 160 Wales caps between them.

Dual contracts are funded 60% by the Welsh Rugby Union and 40% by the regions.

"Having our best players in Wales is vital to the future health of our game," the WRU's Martyn Phillips said.

The WRU chief executive continued: "Seeing international players re- sign these contracts highlights the success of the programme as we continue to work hard to drive the game forward.

"We have made no secret of that and the importance both on and off the field at regional and national level in Welsh players playing their rugby in Wales. "

The quartet have made more than 370 regional appearances between them.

Cardiff Blues' Wales captain Warburton, 28, was the first Welsh player to be given a dual contract in September 2014.

Flanker Lydiate returned to Welsh rugby on a national dual contract in December 2014 when he joined Ospreys following a spell in France with Racing Metro.

Scarlets prop Lee, who has won 26 caps for Wales, signed his first dual contract in January 2015.

Newport Gwent Dragons' Amos, 22, signed his national dual contract in December 2014 and has won 10 caps for Wales.

Amos' deal is a boost to the Dragons as he had been linked with a move away from Rodney Parade.

Newport Gwent Dragons head coach Kingsley Jones said: "It's great news for both our region and Wales that Hallam has committed to the Dragons for another two years. "

Cardiff Blues head coach Danny Wilson on Sam Warburton: "With his leadership ability and having achieved so much in the game he's a great asset for Cardiff Blues.

"It's great that he sees his future here and he will be a key figure for us moving forward. "

Ospreys head coach, Steve Tandy on Dan Lydiate: "With Dan's outlook on the game and his desire to keep learning, even as a senior Wales international and a Lion, he is an example to everybody.

"I believe he's really grown as an individual and a player since he came to us less than two years ago, and there is still more growth in him, on and off the field. "

Scarlets head coach, Wayne Pivac on Samson Lee: "We're delighted to see another homegrown player committing his future to the club.

"It's great news that Samson has extended his contract and will continue to ply his trade here at the Scarlets. " Newport Gwent Dragons head coach Kingsley Jones on Hallam Amos: "He is pivotal to our plans going forward.

"Not only is he a top class international player he is a quality person and at the age of just 21 is respected by the whole squad and staff. "

4 /32 0.0 76ers apologize for canceling 'We Matter' anthem singer

(1.02/5) The Philadelphia 76ers apologized Friday for canceling the national anthem performance of a singer wearing a "We Matter" jersey.

The 76ers backtracked from their original stance when they told R&B singer Sevyn Streeter she could not perform the anthem before Wednesday night's season opener because of the slogan.

"We are sorry that this happened," the Sixers said in a Friday statement. "After receiving feedback from our players, basketball operations staff and ownership group, we believe that the wrong decision was made, and Sevyn should have been welcomed to sing. We apologize to her, and in an effort to move the conversation forward, we have reached out to offer her an opportunity to return and perform at a game of her choice. We are waiting to hear back. "

Streeter could not immediately be reached for comment.

Streeter said in an interview with The Associated Press late Wednesday she was told she would not sing just minutes before her performance. "I'd say two minutes before we were about to walk out ... the organization told me that I could not wear my shirt while singing the national anthem at their game," the R&B singer said by phone. "I was never given any kind of dress code. I was never asked beforehand to show my wardrobe. "

The Sixers players met Thursday and were considering whether to respond to Streeter's cancellation.

"Everybody expressed their emotions about it," forward Robert Covington said. "We want to take steps about it. We just don't know exactly what steps we want to take. We talked about a lot of different things. "

The Sixers play at home Saturday against Atlanta.

5 /32 6.7 Dead beached whale found to have skull fractures

(1.02/5) A blue whale that washed ashore in Northern Californian had suffered from multiple skull fractures.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/2eiK5sy ) that a team of scientists with the Marine Mammal Center, California Academy of Sciences, Noyo Center, and University of California, Davis, said Thursday that the 65-foot male whale suffered blunt force trauma before washing ashore. They have not yet determined the cause of death.

The Marine Mammal Center received a report Wednesday of a whale carcass floating in the surf off Daly City's Thornton State Beach. It was the seventh blue whale carcass beached in the last 40 years along the central and Northern California coastline.

Blue whales are the largest animals in the world. They can grow longer than the length of a basketball court and weigh more than 15 school buses. Dead Beached Whale Found to Have Skull Fractures abcnews.go.com

6 /32 3.3 James Corden, One Direction's Niall Horan release Halloween-themed music video 'Candy' (1.02/5) LOS ANGELES, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- James Corden and One Direction's Niall Horan got into the Halloween spirit Thursday with the release of a new music video for their song "Candy. "

The track, which is a parody of singer Ginuwine's 1996 hit "Pony," features the late night host and pop star seductively singing about candy. "I'm just a Batman, looking for some Pop Rocks, something that's sweet inside, you look like the right fun size," Corden sings as he's shown going trick-or-treating as the caped crusader.

"I'm gonna make your Tootsie Pop," Horan belts dressed as a pirate.

Throughout the video the pair switch between various Halloween costumes including Corden as a stalk of corn and an astronaut and Horan as Dracula, a pod of green beans, a ghost and a cow.

"If you're scary, let's do it, give it, my candy. My satchel's waiting, trick or treat on it," they join together for the chorus.

7 /32 0.6 Cassette tapes fast-forward to new following in Southeast Asia (1.02/5) Collectors and music fans wearing the t-shirts of obscure rock bands brave the tropical heat outside a record store near Malaysia’s capital, waiting to get their hands on new cassette tapes.

No, this isn’t a flashback to the 1980s, but an event marking recent International Cassette Store Day, an annual celebration of a music format once thought headed for extinction but now enjoying a rebirth.

Vinyl’s renaissance is well-documented and now it seems cassettes are rising from the grave, with artists such as Kanye West and Justin Bieber releasing songs on tape.

In Southeast Asia low production costs and a retro-cool image have made cassettes an underground-music fixture, especially for struggling bands getting their name out.

“Cassettes are our best sellers,” Mohammad Radzi Jasni, owner of the store, Teenage Head Records, said after shoving one by Singaporean surf-punk band Force Vomit into a bulky tape player.

“They are still the best way to discover new bands here. It’s very affordable for the guys releasing it and the fans buying them,” he added.

Manufacturing costs can be as low as four ringgit ($1) per tape in Malaysia, compared to 60 to 80 ringgit for a vinyl record.

Vinyl’s cost is a hurdle for young bands and DIY labels in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

There are no vinyl-pressing plants in Southeast Asia, cassette lovers say, while cassette plants still dot the region.

To mark International Cassette Store Day, Teenage Head Records released 200 cassettes featuring Malaysian rock band Bittersweet. Almost all were sold out by the day’s end.

Bittersweet has released three CD albums but keyboardist Fadhilul Iqmal said pressing a few more songs on cassette helps pump up the band’s discography at low cost, while the format’s compact size makes it more mobile than vinyl.

Such thinking has helped fuel a burgeoning DIY cassette label industry in the region. In Indonesia, they have a newfound novelty appeal among youths who grew up with digital music. As with vinyl, fans also appreciate the tangible nature of tapes and the artwork that comes with the inlays.

“It’s trendy right now with a generation of 20-somethings not used to buying physical music,” explained Marcel Thee, vocalist of Indonesian band Sajama Cut, which issued a two-song cassette recently.

“Tapes provide a platform for releasing singles. If it wasn’t on tape, it would have garnered less attention,” Thee said.

Notorious for getting jammed, unspooled, and for their hiss-heavy sound – cassettes were eclipsed worldwide by CDs in the early 1990s, though they held their ground in Southeast Asia until the early 2000s.

For older music fans, the cassettes bring back fond memories of homemade mix tapes.

Sound is another issue – the vinyl and cassette cognoscenti dismiss digital music as too compressed and lacking the warmth of analog sound.

“Vinyl has a warmer sound but it is more expensive. If you have money you can buy vinyl, if you don’t have money, you can buy cassette,” says Mohamad Nor Yaacob, co-founder of Malaysia’s Basement Records, which focuses on hardcore punk and metal.

For struggling young bands, cassettes are a potential entry ticket into the industry.

“First you release on cassette, like 100 pieces. When people know your band, you can make vinyl if you have money,” says Nor.

Later, exports of cheaply made cassettes can help labels and bands reach a larger fanbase overseas, opening up touring possibilities.

“The underground scene here has actually been pressing cassettes long before it got hip again so I don’t see why it cannot stay,“ says Radzi.

9 /32 1.3 Eric Clapton sued by musician’s estate over iconic song

(1.02/5) Nashville, Tenn. — The estate of a Mississippi blues musician has filed a lawsuit against Eric Clapton, accusing the Hall of Fame guitarist of giving a songwriting credit to the wrong artist.

The Tennessean reports a lawsuit filed in Nashville federal court says Eric Clapton attributed the song “Alberta” to Huddie Ledbetter — better known as Lead Belly — in the 2013 re-release of Clapton’s “Unplugged” album, when the credit should have gone to Bo Carter.

Miles Floyd, Carter’s step-grandson, says Clapton’s song was actually a cover of Carter’s “Corrine, Corrina,” which was first licensed in 1929 and over time became interchangeable with “Alberta.”

The lawsuit seeks $5 million and includes Clapton and Warner Music Group Corp as defendants. The defendants haven’t responded to the lawsuit.

Carter died in Memphis in 1964.

10 /32 6.2 Charlize Theron pokes fun at herself at amfAr's Inspiration Gala (0.01/5) She's apparently gained over 30 pounds for her new movie role. And Charlize Theron happily poked fun at herself on Thursday when comedian Chelsea Handler made a quip about her fuller figure at the 2016 amfAR Inspiration Gala. The blonde beauty, 41, was honored at the black tie event and joked: 'Yes, I am very fat right now' as Handler presented her with her award. Instead of a figure-hugging dress, the Oscar winner paired a full-length black gown with a tailored black jacket for the evening that raises money to fund the nonprofit organization's AIDS research programs. Theron's dress featured lace detailing along the low-cut neckline that revealed just a hint of cleavage. The skirt was gathered slightly at the bodice and had a lace overlay over the solid underslip. The actress wore her signature blonde hair tied back into a rather severe updo but softened her face by adding a pair of stunning chandelier diamond earrings. During the reception, dinner and musical entertainment, Theron was presented with the Inspiration Award for her work in fighting HIV/AIDS with the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project. 'Despite our best intentions, sometimes people are still falling through the cracks and too many are not being seen,' Theron said when she took to the stage. 'It's tough to admit that as much progress as we've made, sometimes it feels like we're failing the ones that need us the most. The actress emphasized that there's still work to be done, 'We need big and bold investments in outreach, 'We need big bold ideas to fight poverty [and] end discrimination in hard to reach places.' Charlize has gained a reported 35 pounds for her new role in Tully, directed by Jason Reitman. She plays a mother whose brother hires her a nanny after she gives birth to her third child. For her Academy Award winning role in Monster, Charlize gained 30 pounds in the film which saw her celebrated with 17 acting honours.

11 /32 2.1 Mana fighting for sea turtles with clothing line NEW YORK (AP) — Mexican rock band Mana is expanding its fight to save endangered sea turtles with a clothing line. The band, known for its environmental activism, is stepping into the fashion industry with Ritos del Sol , a line of ecofriendly jeans and T- shirts for men and women. A percentage of each sale will be donated to the group's Selva Negra Foundation, the nonprofit it created in 1995 to raise awareness and take real action to save endangered species and help underserved communities around the world. It offers four lines — Selva Negra, Cosmos, Laberinto de Concreto and Inframundo — with designs that go from abstract prints inspired in flora and fauna to skulls and a skeleton's ribs. The musicians said the idea was presented to them a couple years ago by the designers at a Puebla, Mexico clothing factory owned by a cousin of vocalist Fher. "The clothing that he makes uses 25 percent of the water that the factories normally use in Mexico," Fher said. "They are also good to their employees, it's fair trade, and they work in indigenous communities not only in Puebla but in Oaxaca. " Drummer Alex Gonzalez said band members weren't initially convinced because "it's not that easy to launch a clothing line and we have seen other bands and other artists (doing it) and some of them have done well, other not so much. "But more than a business for the band, we wanted for it to be a positive idea and proposal so that when people would buy the clothes they would know that they are doing something beneficial for the environment," he added. "So Fher came up with this idea of supporting the sea turtles that we have in Mexico. " All four band members were involved in the designs of the T-shirts. "At the end of the day, it had to be clothing that we wanted to use, both on and offstage," Gonzalez said. ___ Online: https://ritosdelsol.com/ http://www.selvanegra.com.mx/ http://www.mana.com.mx/ ___ Follow Sigal Ratner-Arias on Twitter: https://twitter.com/sigalratner

12 /32 0.0 Hungarian musicians recall secret jazz recordings from 1956 In the Hungary of the 1950s, jazz music was a dangerous pastime — but music lovers got some clandestine help from the United States government.

Jazz was a tool of U. S. Cold War diplomacy, promoted and broadcast into the East Bloc in an effort to make American culture more appealing to intellectuals and other elites behind the Iron Curtain.

On Thursday evening, the United States celebrated those past efforts with a concert at a nightclub in Budapest that featured the music of Duke Ellington and other artists that it once broadcast into Hungary.

The embassy also released a limited edition CD of Hungarian jazz recordings sponsored by a U. S. diplomat shortly before the country's failed anti-Soviet revolution of 1956. Later that year, the recordings were broadcast back into the country — and around the world — on Voice of America.

"There were freedom fighters in 1956 ... fighting for freedom and for democracy," Ambassador Colleen Bell said before the concert in Budapest. "Some were in the streets with makeshift weapons and some were in recording studios recording jazz. "

The concert was part of embassy commemorations marking the 60th anniversary of the revolution, which was crushed by Soviet tanks.

It comes at a time of deeply strained ties between Hungary and the United States, with the U. S. frequently criticizing the erosion of the democratic system of checks and balances under Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Among those at the tribute concert were some of the musicians who performed for the 1956 recording.

Drummer Ferenc Ruttka, later a famous painter and art director in films, recalled that jazz was a "forbidden fruit" in the 1950s. He said many musicians managed to stay abreast of the rapidly changing scene through smuggled recordings.

"Jazz is my life. Making these recordings was total joy," Ruttka said.

The free-spirited musical form was feared as a subversive force by rulers across the communist world. In Hungary, public performances were banned and the syncopations and improvisations of jazz were kept off the national radio stations.

Instead, jazz lovers held clandestine jam sessions to avoid the secret police and listened to American music on static-filled radio shows that authorities tried to block.

"The Americans believed that, through jazz, they could target the intellectual classes of the communist bloc," jazz critic Robert Maloschik said. "This tactic of 'loosening up' was effective, because college students and jazz musicians would get together to listen and play jazz in their homes. To do this in the 1950s was very risky because the security services were always watching out for such activities. "

Ernest Nagy, the American vice consul in Budapest in 1956 and an amateur musician, attended some covert jam sessions. Impressed by what he heard, Nagy rented out the Qualiton Studio of the state-owned Hungarian Record Production Company to record some of the Hungarian bands.

The sides recorded in June 1956 included original compositions as well as standards like Jerome Kern's "Yesterdays" and "Bernie's Tune" by the Gerry Mulligan Quartet.

They were broadcast on Nov. 23, 1956, by legendary presenter Willis Conover on his Voice of America "Jazz Hour. " By that time, Soviet tanks had crushed the Hungarian revolution.

"We don't know whether the musicians who made this music are able to listen today or even where they may be, as we broadcast their music," Conover said. "But here for the world is their living testimonial in the universal language of music. "

Several American jazz greats, including Mulligan, Quincy Jones and Billy Taylor, were guests of the show.

"This one sounded better than some of the things I hear cut over here," Jones commented on one Hungarian performance. "A lot of European musicians have tendencies to just imitate outright. This seems to have the basic feeling that we have and their own approach to it. "

As it happened, at least one of the performers back in Budapest was listening on short-wave radio: Ervin Vaszondi, then 19, who played trumpet in a sextet. His group included the late Gabor Szabo, who later gained world renown for his groundbreaking guitar style.

"I turned it on and suddenly I heard myself," Vaszondi said. "I woke my father up and told him, 'Dad, come listen, I'm playing on the Washington radio.'"

His father was less impressed, Voice of America or not.

"His favorites were Hungarian songs and operettas and he said 'You call this music, son?'" Vaszondi recalled. "And I said, 'Yes, I do!'"

13 /32 0.8 Kent Union picked Zayn Malik and Sadiq Khan 'for Black History Month' A university's student union has been branded a 'national embarrassment' after picking Zayn Malik and Sadiq Khan as poster boys for Black History Month. Furious students at Kent University pointed out that neither the former One Direction singer nor the London Mayor are black - and are both from British Pakistani families. The UK Black History Month organisers said they were ‘deeply disappointed’ at the university's student union putting Mr Malik and Mr Khan on a list of six public figures to represent diversity. The other people on Kent Union's list were broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald, athlete Dame Kelly Holmes, singer Shirley Bassey and footballer Arthur Wharton. A Black History Month spokesman said on Twitter: ‘Deeply disappointed at Kent University’s ill thought and misdirected Black History Month celebrations. ‘With Asian Heritage Month being observed by a growing number of countries in May, will black icons be celebrated then?’ Mr Khan, born in London in 1970, was one of eight children had by his parents - a bus driver and a seamstress, who had migrated from Pakistan to Britain. Meanwhile Mr Malik, who quit One Direction after five years in March 2015 to pursue a solo career, was born in Bradford in 1993 to British Pakistani parents. Students were quick to condemn the move by Kent Union, with Benjamin Smith writing: ‘At this point Kent Union has become a national embarrassment.' Hettie Duncan added: 'Kent Union making Zayn Malik the poster boy for Black History Month. They've really gone and done it this time.' And an anonymous music business and innovations student said: '£9,000 a year to tell Zayn Malik, Happy Black History Month. LMAO, Kent Uni is a joke.' Meanwhile Devante Wallace added: ‘It’s not just about the image shared, it’s the fact you have the audacity to try and bundle all non-white culture into black history month as if were not important enough to be represented individually. It’s offensive to all ethnic groups.’ The student union at Kent University said they aimed to ‘empower’ students through its Black History Month. Kent Union president Rory Murray said: ‘I want to apologise on behalf of Kent Union to any individuals who were upset, uncomfortable or offended by the image shared. ‘There was no intent for this to happen and I am very sorry to anybody who felt this way. I also feel it is important to explain the context behind how this happened. ‘As a students’ union we are led by our members; over 2,000 volunteers who give up their time to run campaigns and events. ‘The Black History Month calendar of events was led and run by these students and supported by the organisation. ‘The activity for the month was decided by open meetings attended by black and minority ethnic students. ‘I hope that the passion ignited in many people in the last 12 hours will continue and that students will become further involved in leading our black and minority ethnic work.’

14 /32 0.5 Mel and Sue sign up for new BBC Saturday night show Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins have signed up for their first show since quitting The Great British Bake Off.

They have been announced as hosts of a new Saturday night BBC One show, Let's Sing and Dance For Comic Relief.

The pair quit the Bake Off in September after it was announced the show would be moving to Channel 4.

Let's Sing and Dance for Comic Relief, described as "a singing and dancing extravaganza", will be on BBC One next year ahead of Red Nose Day 2017.

Perkins said she was "thrilled" to be co-presenting the show, "not least because it will finally show the world why I was voted West Penwith's Krumping Champion (over 40s category). "

Giedroyc issued her own statement, which said: "Since leaving the Royal Ballet twelve years ago, Mel is really looking forward to getting back on her points and showing the brave Comic Relief celebrity dancers how to split leap and ball change.

"She's delighted to be taking time out from her busy schedule at the Royal Opera House (she was recently called 'a complete and utter Tosca' in the starring role of the eponymous opera) to take part in co-hosting duties for Let's Sing and Dance For Comic Relief. "

Let's Dance for Comic Relief has been a hit TV show with fans in the past.

The new format will see celebrity contestants, who are yet to be announced, singing as well as performing iconic dance routines of classic songs.

They will perform in front of a panel of guest judges. The four-episode series will include three live heats before a live grand finale.

Giedroyc and Perkins will also be sent out onto the street to get the public involved in dance- offs.

Kate Phillips, controller of BBC entertainment commissioning, said it was "hugely exciting" to bring the pair to BBC One on a Saturday night.

She said: "Their warmth, wit, charm and chemistry married with their genuine love of entertainment are all a perfect fit for Let's Sing and Dance for Comic Relief. "

When they announced they were leaving The Great British Bake Off, Giedroyc and Perkins said they were "very shocked and saddened" to learn that Channel 4 had bought the show.

They had been with the programme since it started in 2010 and were a massive hit with fans for their gentle humour and double entendres.

Giedroyc and Perkins, who did not enter into talks with Channel 4, explained in a statement: "We made no secret of our desire for the show to remain where it was... we're not going with the dough. "

Mary Berry also said she would not be moving with only fellow judge Paul Hollywood to appear on the show on its new channel. Great British Bake Off's final episode on the BBC was broadcast on Wednesday, reaching a record audience .

The BBC is hoping the new Comic Relief contest will become an international format, like other shows such as Strictly Come Dancing.

Nicki McDermott from BBC Worldwide is overseeing the international sale of the show format.

She said: "We've already seen how internationally appealing dancing has been, so we're confident that the multi-tasking opportunities and pitfalls that singing adds to the mix will see many other countries wanting to emulate the entertainment values this series affords viewers everywhere. "

15 /32 0.3 Niall Horan enjoys final day in LA after dropping brand new music video... as he admits to fancying ex-fling Ellie Goulding His solo career has been going from strength to strength. And Niall Horan looked in good spirits as he enjoyed his final day in LA on Thursday before heading to LAX airport later on. The 23-year-old One Direction star was seen heading to the CBS studios with a female pal, after admitting he still fancies singer Ellie Goulding. Scroll down for video Sporting fitted white jeans and a T-shirt, Niall cut a dapper figure. Accessorising with a rucksack and sunglasses, he was spotted getting into a car with a mystery brunette- thought to be TV producer Ben Winston's wife Meredith- a good friend to Harry Styles. His pal worked casual chic in a black cropped jumper, an oversized white shirt, jeans and trainers. Adding a dash of designer she accessorised with a Givenchy bag and sunglasses. The duo headed to the studio together, before Niall went on to LAX airport to catch a departing flight in the evening. And it looked as though Niall's stay had been productive, with producer Ben taking to Twitter on Thursday to tweet: 'Brand new music video from @Niallhoran dropped tonight. Especially for Halloween'. The singer was headed to New York, where he appeared at the SiriusXM radio studio On Friday. Meanwhile Niall revealed he still holds a candle for his ex-girlfriend Ellie during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday. The pair enjoyed a string of dates back in 2014 but decided they were better off as friends. And Niall took part in a quick-fire game of Who’d You Rather with chat show host Ellen, and ended up picking the Burn singer as his dream date. Explaining the rules, Ellie told Niall: 'You're single. I'm going to try and find you the perfect girlfriend. We're going to play a speed round of Who'd You Rather? 'I'm going to show you two pictures and you're going to choose one [person] over the other.' While he selected both Rihanna and Selena Gomez on three occasions each, beating the likes of Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato, it was Ellie he eventually settled on as his ideal woman. He selected the British beauty over Rita Ora, Jennifer Lopez and Kendall Jenner. The game also revealed Niall has a penchant for an older lady, choosing Diane Keaton, 70, and Demi Moore, 53. Ellen declared: 'I think Ellie's the winner! You wana be with Ellie. It's official. If Ellie's watching, there's your guy!' During the interview, which marked Niall's first solo visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show without his One Direction bandmates, the pair chatted about how they both look alike and compared photos of themselves. Joking about how often he gets compared to Ellen, Niall laughed: 'Every day of my life. I don't mind it though, I like it!' He also talks about writing his debut solo single This Town, before treating the studio audience to a live performance. Ellie and Niall are alleged to have hooked up in 2014, while she was supposedly seeing Ed Sheeran. The 29-year-old is still plagued by the rumours she cheated with the Irishman on then-'boyfriend' Ed Sheeran, despite her insistence she never dated the Thinking Out Loud singer. Sheeran's song Don't, which is about a lover who cheated with his friend, was rumoured to be about Goulding; her song On My Mind, which tells of a one-night stand with a tattooed admirer who got too attached, was rumoured to be her reply. However, Sheeran has never confirmed who the song is about, while Goulding has persistently denied her part. Ellie recently confessed she's still a great admirer of the former 1D singer. 'We’re still friends. We went on a few dates, and it was really fun. He’s a really, really lovely guy,', she told Seventeen magazine. 'He’s got the biggest sense of humour, he’s very caring, and I see him as a genuine friend in the industry.'

17 /32 17 /32 2.2 Chicago Cubs fans Sabrina and Paul Glozeris set up 'Go Cubs Go' Halloween light show at their home in Omaha, Nebraska A couple of Chicago natives have brought their love of the Cubs to Nebraska with a loud display of affection. Sabrina and Paul Glozeris, who now live in Omaha, have set up a singing Halloween light show to celebrate the Chicago Cubs' first world series in 71 years. The display spreads on their entire house and includes three spooky characters who seem to be singing along to Steeve Goodman's 'Go Cubs Go!', the team's 1984 anthem. Their house also lights up in blue and red, the Cub's colors, for the entire two and a half minutes of the song. Scroll down for video It took weeks for the Glozerises to set up the display - even though they have a Halloween light show every year. 'The hard part is syncing up the lyrics to the mouth movements,' Sabrina told CBS News . 'It's like animation in a way, you have to go slow and make sure everything looks right.' The couple's neighbors seem to be 'pretty cool' with the light show, she said. The animation only goes live on weekends until 9 pm - and will of course run on Halloween. 'Our parents were fans and instilled Cubbie love in us early,' Sabrina added. An online video of the display has now gathered 309,809 views on YouTube. The Glozerises hope Cubs fans around the world can enjoy the show. Cubs fans across the county have been elated as their team made it to the world series for the first time in 71 years. The Cubs played - and won- their latest world series game Wednesday against the Cleveland Indians. The two teams were scheduled to play against each other again Friday night.

18 /32 0.6 The most viewed brand Vines and what can we learn from them as Twitter closes the loop Now Twitter has sealed the untimely demise of six second video network Vine , short-form social video specialists Burst, which collated The Drum’s Brand Vine Chart week after week , has dug into its data trove to ascertain which companies created the most looped Vines.

As an early player in snackable videos, the time restrictions enforced by the platform got brands and advertisers in the habit of creating snackable, effective and creative content long before the Facebooks and the Snapchats of the world realised it was the way forward.

But Twitter has delivered a deathblow to the site as it looks to lighten the load and provide more profitability to prospective buyers. Now the creators and brands will move on to new platforms (in the highly unlikely case they hadn't already). Below are some of the most looped brand Vines ever, according to Burst.

10. Jolly Rancher

9. GoPro

8. WWE

7. FC Barcelona

6. Vine (promoting an extensive update)

5. MLB

4. NBA

3. Toronto Raptors

2. Downy

1. Louis Vuitton

Simon Bibby, head of research and co-founder of Burst, said: "What made Vine compelling was the creative chaos of trying to get your message across in six (and a half) seconds. It challenged marketers to be bold, take risks and tell engaging short stories in an era where the human attention span is now less than a goldfish. In theory it should not have failed, and for many brands it didn't. The influencers, artists, sports clubs and brands that succeeded on Vine were the ones who could deliver a complete story arc in a single loop. For me, Vine's legacy is how it revived stop-motion (and even magic) as a creative art form.

"In the early days Vine was a good fit for fashion, before Instagram added its own looping video. Meanwhile, Musical.ly has taken over to become the platform to build a pop career through short video snippets. Vine is still drawing in sports fans but we've already seen some clubs prioritising Snapchat this season. In the main, video creators now have to be platform agnostic if they want to get noticed. "

Rus Yusupov, the founder of the Vine, expressed his remorse at its closure, despite having sold it to Twitter for $30m in 2013, claiming “Don’t sell your company!” earlier today (Friday 28 October).

19 /32 1.0 Cruz's Trump flip-flop may hurt his popularity back in Texas SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) — It’s a refrain Ted Cruz has long used, but he’s trotting it out more frequently these days — laying on the Texas charm thick for audiences in his home state, where his popularity may suddenly be on the line. “Give me a horse, a gun and an open plain, and we can conquer the world,” the Republican senator told a recent roundtable of business owners in San Marcos, one of America’s fastest-growing communities, fueled by booming job markets in nearby Austin and San Antonio. “That’s what our state was built on, and that’s what I’m fighting for every day.”

Cruz won 11 states and finished a surprising second in the GOP presidential primary, but his popularity may be slipping nationally and back in Texas after he refused to endorse Donald Trump and was booed at the Republican National Convention. Cruz did an about-face in late September and said he supported Trump, but that now looks like unfortunate political timing, coming two weeks before the release of a 2005 video in which the billionaire businessman can be heard bragging about grabbing women’s genitals and kissing them without permission.

The moves by Cruz angered some establishment Texas Republicans who never fully supported him while alienating parts of his tea party base that had long since embraced Trump and wondered what took Cruz so long. Also disappointed were true-believer conservatives who liked Cruz’s shunning of Trump and were sorry to see him abandon it.

Cruz isn’t up for re-election until 2018 but he now may face a serious challenger in Texas’ Republican primary for U. S. Senate, once unthinkable for a man seen as a rising political star in his state even before he jumped into a presidential race that raised his national profile.

“I believe that he will have a challenger,” said JoAnn Fleming, who was Texas tea party chairwoman for Cruz’s presidential campaign.

Fleming herself remains a strong Cruz supporter but said the senator’s detractors pounced on his holding out on Trump for so long before finally coming around. “I think that that gave them a little initiative and incentive to start figuring out how they were going to try and erode his support,” she said.

Republican Texas Rep. Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, hasn’t ruled out challenging Cruz in two years. One of Congress’ richest members, McCaul recently called Cruz out, saying he spent “a lot of time since day one running for president.” McCaul, though, has had recent missteps, including having to apologize after mistakenly suggesting in September that the Republican National Committee’s data has been hacked after that happened to the Democratic National Committee.

Fleming said Cruz remains popular with the same conservative core that helped him upset Texas’ Republican establishment-backed lieutenant governor during the state’s 2012 Senate primary.

“However the presidential election turns out, we know that a strong conservative has not been elected to the presidency,” Fleming said. “The people of Texas are going to want to make sure that they have people representing them in Washington, D. C., that will represent Texas values.”

Others saw Cruz’s convention speech as selfishly positioning himself for a second presidential run in 2020 rather than supporting his party until then. And they’re not sure his late Trump conversion was enough.

Mike Gibson, Republican Party chairman for Fort Bend County, outside Cruz’s hometown of Houston, said he thought Cruz’s convention speech was a mistake. “I heard frustration,” Gibson said. “But then I also heard people that were very supportive of him because he was sticking by his principles. The Republican Party has been very, very good at throwing themselves on the sword, literally, over principles.”

Norma Brady Jeter, a vice president for the Texas Tea Party Republican Women, said opinions among grass-roots conservatives about Cruz’s Trump shun and subsequent change of heart remain “very much a mixed bag,” but she doesn’t see Trump supporters exacting revenge in 2018.

“We worked too hard to get him there,” she said of Cruz in the Senate. “A man like him doesn’t come along that often.”

Cruz in recent weeks has crisscrossed Texas as if he were already running for re-election — touring cotton fields, manning phone banks, encouraging voter turnout and addressing business roundtables. But he says that has more to do with helping Texas Republicans in the Nov. 8 election than his political future.

“I don’t spend too much time worrying about critics. There will always be critics,” he told The Associated Press. “My focus is on doing what’s right for the Texans who elected me.”

Long a Senate troublemaker, meanwhile, Cruz has taken steps to improve his reputation with fellow chamber Republicans, which suggests he’s mending fences there ahead of a re-election run.

He has campaigned for Republican Senate hopefuls in Nevada and Colorado. He also recently teamed with fellow Texan and Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, a pillar of the powerful congressional establishment Cruz long decried, for Texas fundraisers benefiting six Republican colleagues in tight races.

Among those was New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte, an outspoken critic of Cruz after he helped spark a partial government shutdown in 2013. Underscoring the awkwardness of Cruz’s charm offensive, though, was Ayotte’s release of a television ad that boasted of past clashes with Cruz. It came on the same day she flew to Texas to raise funds alongside him.

“When partisan politicians led the fight to shut down the government, I led the fight to reopen it,” Ayotte said in the ad.

27 /32 4.3 Lindsay Lohan really is aiding refugees It's true.

The actress is the brand ambassador for the blue caffeine lemonade Mintanine, which has partnered with her to aid refugees.

The German company behind the drink, YNDA GmbH, said in a statement it has been working with Lohan since September.

The "Mean Girls" star has been sharing images on social media of herself interacting with Syrian refugees and aid workers in Turkey.

According to the company's statement, it will donate 10 euros ($10.90) for each Bigbox (72 cans) ordered from its online shop.

Earlier reports that Lohan was planning on distributing the drinks -- which contain caffeine and taurine -- at refugee camps were criticized.

A spokesman for the company told CNN that "Lindsay, as brand ambassador, of course has a certain quantity of cans at her disposal. She is free and welcome to give those cans to refugees she is meeting. "

The star is offering the drink at her Lohan nightclub in Greece.

28 /32 2.4 How the Eating Better Alliance will encourage men to eat less meat on The Drum’s Do It Day 2016 The Eating Better Alliance will oversee the launch of a new campaign at this year’s Do It Day, encouraging men to cut down on their meat consumption by coining the phrase ‘Vegicurious’.

The group want men to eat less meat to better their health and the health of the planet. Eating meat has been perceived as being masculine for years, with advertising and marketing campaigns contributing to six out of 10 men exceeding the government intake of red and processed meat per week, as opposed to only one in four women. In 2015, Pepperami released research that claimed that men would rather give up sex, Sky Sports and their jobs, than give up meat.

Eating Better posed a meaty challenge; how can we encourage men to eat less meat? The winning idea turned what could be a nagging campaign about eating less meat into a fun message to chow down more vegetables, under the banner: “Are you Vegcurious?”

It will be brought to life through social activation campaigns encouraging men to share their #vegcurious meals on social platforms, with the potential for celebrity chef endorsements, restaurant and brand interaction via the #vegcurious hashtag, with the potential for physical popups in stations, public places and supermarkets. The campaign will culminate in the Vegcurious Awards intended to appeal to many brands men are loyal to.

Daniel Vennard, from the World Resources Institute which is working alongside Eating Better, said: “The idea disrupted the usual narrative, turning the serious to humour, from guilt to enablement, providing a very engaging and motivating campaign that will have an excellent legacy factor.”

Winning team: Marc Young, Dennis Publishing; Chris Aming, founder, Creative Semiotics; Ben Hawley, director, Theobald Fox; Christopher Onderstall, Fleishman; Inga Driksne, head of client relations, Duel

30 /32 30 /32 4.3 Say what? Ntsiki Mazwai sings Pearl Thusi's praises

Ntsiki has previously made headlines for shading Pearl but, like many of us, was blown away by her honesty during an interview with Anele Mdoda this week.

Taking to Twitter after the Real Talk interview, Ntsiki said that New York has done Pearl the world of good.

Ntsiki even defended Pearl, saying that she now realises that an "evil girl" did sabotage her.

We wonder who Ntsiki was referring to?

Ntsiki caused a Twitter frenzy back in September when she crashed the #PearlThusiDay party to say that the day should instead be dedicated to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, who had turned 80-years-old.

"I'm not saying you can't celebrate Pearl's new job but I think it is sad that you want to have a Pearl Thusi day before you have a Winnie Mandela day. Are you seriously going to compare being on TV to a real lived struggle that changed all our lives? You’re diminishing Winnie Mandela's role by comparing her to American TV... when TV starts being more important than our own heroes," she tweeted.

She later took to Twitter to shade actors that had moved to America to take on "low-rated" TV shows.

"I don't think that being in a low rated USA production is greater than being in a South African production ....at all," she tweeted as part of an explosive rant on the topic.

32 /32 3.2 'I was only making music not working in an office:' Sophie Ellis-Bextor reveals going back to work three months after giving birth 'made me a better mum' She welcomed her fourth son a year ago. And Sophie Ellis- Bextor has certainly had a busy time since giving birth to little Jesse, juggling life as a mum of four with her music career. The star appeared on Friday's Lorraine where she told host Helen Skelton that working 'makes me a better mum.' Jesse, who was born last November, is the fourth child for Sophie and her husband Richard Jones, joining older brothers Sonny, 12, Kit, seven, and Ray, four. After a couple of months at home, Sophie headed back to work, hitting the recording studio to work on her sixth album Familia. 'I started recording in February when my youngest Jesse was 13 or 14 weeks old. He'll be one next week,' Sophie told Helen on ITV's Lorraine. The singer insists that while she was juggling a lot, she found being in the studio with her newborn a really happy time. 'It was really lovely, it was very intense in terms of working, we recorded 11 songs in ten days. I was pottering around doing bits of singing, feeding my baby and cooking for the crew.' 'My husband played on the record so it was a family, relaxed atmosphere.' She added that she didn't even have to think about working while her son was so young, pointing out that 'being separated from him at that point for any length of time would have felt wrong. I was only making music not working in an office or anything.' Sophie said she makes it work with husband Richard, who is also busy with his own music and touring. 'We've been working musician parents since we had our first little boy and we just get on it with it really,' she revealed. 'I'm actually quite surprised quite how much fixation we do have on working mums really because there's so many working parents out there.' 'Hopefully it's inspiring for my kids that I've got a work ethic and I enjoy it. It's what makes me a better mum.' 'I was just in France and Poland promoting the record and I don't get asked nearly as often in Europe how I make it work, I appreciate that people want to know…,' she added. Helen, mum to her one-year-old son Ernie, told Sophie: 'I think it's inspirational, I've done it too.'
