Mise-en-scene in Ghostbusters II isn't as defined as in some other movies. The lighting has alot to do with colored lights and drastic lighting and shadows. Outifts indicate profession and some of the characterization, but these outfits change over time. Pink lighting indicates the power and effect of the pink slime that is the evil in the movie, the more it grows, the more potent the pink light gets. In the begining we see the Ghostbusters car in disrepair, and two members in grungy outfits. The atmosphere and lighting in the entire city, through all city shots is dark and a little grungy, indicating the unhappy environment that is helping the pink slime to grow. We see Egon with perfectly "coifed" hair in a tie and sweater vest the speaks of professionality, he has gained status as a doctor of science. Ray is in a bookish attire, wearing glasses. His bookstore is slapped in a cramped street space in New York city, all but forgotten. Dana is seen in a lot of blouses and shirts, she is still artsy but more professional and more motherly in these outfits. Jansoz is an artists, he wears more creative sweater vests and his hair is curly and not well kept looking. After his posession by Vigo we see him lit by red lights going after the baby and re dlights out the window before he comes for the baby as a ghost. The red lights give him a menacing appearance, indicating the dark deed he is carrying out. Vigo is surrounded by the pink light of the slime, a symbol of his rebirthal, and has flashing shadows and lights on his face to indicate his evil and darkness. In the court room we see them in suits, dressed up professionally. Once they put on the gear there is a comical effect to these suits and the gear, but it also indicates that they have been legitimized by the court as ghostbusters. Now we see hem in slightly brighter lighting, the car has been cleaned up and repainted and they have gotten new ghostbusters oufits, indicating the new ghostbusters. There is a scene where they are showing results of the tests to Peter. We see props in the scene that indicate a gaming environment. A pool table, a dart board, the music system. They play music and the toaster containing the pink slime begisn dancing. This enviroment creates and upbeat, fun sense to the scene. In another scene in the subways we are given a dark environment with very few lights. Fait lighting allows the audience to see the characters. This stark lighting contrast sets up the scene for the horror like environment where ghost heads show up out of no where and a ghost train runs through one of the team members. Make up in the movie was subtle. The only blatant use of make up was in the secretary Janine, she wears dark make ups and bright lipstick. She is an eccentric character that goes for the bumbling Louis Tully from the first movie. We see her costumed in rediculous outfits, a leopard print coat, a brightr green dress, lime green gloves, and bright red hair. .
