Minireview Article The Current Research Status of Endangered Rhynchostylis retusa (L.) Blume: A Review ABSTRACT Orchids bear the crown of highly evolved ornamental floral specialization in the plant kingdom, but have poor medicinal background. Further, Rhynchostylis retusa (L.) Blume is much less studied plant species among Orchidaceae due to its overexploitation in the wild. This epiphytic herb belongs to the tropical areas and kept under endangered category by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) that points out its abated natural population. In this sense, the aim is to document the past and present researches upon R. retusa highlighting the traditional and remedial uses, and to ignite the conservation awareness among the people. Keywords: Conservation, medicines, mythology, patents, taxonomy, tissue culture. 1. INTRODUCTION Orchidaceae (monocotyledons) are one of the largest families of the plant world extending from tropics to alpines along with a boon of astonishing beauty in their flowers [1]. Orchids are the richest among angiosperms with diverse species number (approximately >25,000) having epiphytes (more abundant, 73 %), lithophytes and ground plants [2,3]. Fossil records of orchids date back to 100 million years ago [4]. Actually the term ‘orchid’ coming from ‘orchis’ (Greek word) meaning testicle was given by Theophrastus (372-286 B.C.), who reported the use of orchid roots as aphrodiasic. Despite of huge family size, orchids are largely exploited and traded for their ornamental flower diversity but less attention is paid towards their remedial properties. According to Reinikka, the first evidence of the use of orchids as medicines comes from Shênnung’s Materia Medica in 28th century B.C. -

It enjoys almost all types of vegetations. Among its floral wealth, the diversity of orchids plays an important role. They are known for their beautiful flowers having ecological values. An extensive survey in the field done from 2009 to 2020 in different areas of the state, supported by information found in the literature and by the material kept in the collections of local herbariums, allows us to propose, in this article, a list of 160 species belonging to 50 different genera. Furthermore, endemism, conservation aspects, medicinal and economic values of some of them are discussed. Résumé L'État d'Odisha abrite une grande richesse florale et faunistique avec des paysages variés. Il bénéficie de presque tous les types de végétations. Parmi ses richesses florales, la diversité des orchidées joue un rôle important. Ces dernières sont connues pour leurs belles fleurs ayant une valeurs écologiques. INTRODUCTION The word ‘Orchid’ has been originated from the Greek word ‘Orchis’ meaning testicles (Bedford, 1969; George, 1999; Rittershausen et al., 2002). Orchidaceae is one of the largest and most advanced family in the plant kingdom. The family shows pantropic distribution and comprises approximately 28,484 species. (Christenhusz and Byng, 2016; Govaerts et al., 2017). Orchids are considered to be the highly evolved among all the flowering plants (Waller, 2016). They are inhabitant of tropical countries, which includes tropical forest of South and Central America, Mexico, India, Ceylon, Burma, South China, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, New Guinea and Australia (Irawati, 2013). Orchids are annual or perennial herbs, lacking permanent woody structure (Randhawa and Mukhopadhyay, 1986). Depending on the mode of habits, they can be terrestrial (growing on the ground) epiphytic (growing on trees), lithophytic (growing on rocks) or mycoheterotrophic (growing on the dead and decaying matter). The vegetative features in orchids are very diverse, but in general, their common components are root, stem/pseudobulb, leaf, flower and fruit. Few distinguishing features of the members of Orchidaceae are • The presence of an odd petal called labellum with spur or without spur. • The presence of a column called as Gynostemium. • Pollens are packed together into the pollinia or pollinium, a mass of waxy pollen. -

Abstract A comprehensive account on Orchid diversity of the state of Maharashtra has been made on the basis of field and herbarium studies. The present study revealed the occurrence of 122 taxa (119 species and 3 varieties) belonging to 36 genera from the State, out of which 32% (37 species and 2 varieties) are endemic to India. Special efforts have been made to find out distribution of endemic species and their conservation status. Besides this ecology, habitat and phyto-geographical affinities of the orchids occurring within the state of Maharashtra are also discussed. Résumé Révision des orchidées de Maharashtra, Inde – Un bilan détaillé de la diversité en orchidées de l’État de Maharashtra a été réalisé sur la base d'études menées sur le terrain et dans les herbiers. L'étude a révélé la présence dans cet État de 122 taxons (119 espèces et 3 variétés) réparties en 36 genres, dont 32% (37 espèces et 2 variétés) sont endémiques de l'Inde. Un effort particulier a permis de préciser la distribution géographique des espèces endémiques et leur statut de conservation. En outre sont discutés l'habitat et les affinités phyto-géographiques de chaque espèce poussant dans l’État. In orchids, most species show bitegmic ovules, except for some mycoheterotrophic species that show ovules with only one integument. Analysis of ovules and the development of the seed coat provide important information regarding functional aspects such as dispersal and seed germination. This study aimed to analyze the origin and development of the seed coat of the mycoheterotrophic orchid Pogoniopsis schenckii and to compare this development with that of other photosynthetic species of the family. Wild Orchids of Sharavathi River Basin and Parts of Uttara Kannada G R Rao Energy & Wetlands Research Group, Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore ‐ 560 012. INTRODUCTION Orchids, more than any other plants, exert a mysterious fascination for most people, and all the wild orchids of tropical regions are highly puzzling and peculiar. These graceful plants belong to family Orchidaceae being one of the largest families of flowering plants. This family is represented by more than 17,000 known wild species in 750 genera in the world and the present figure of the hybrids among these touches around 80,000 (Rao T A.,1998). The Orchidaceae contains more species than almost any other flowering plant family, being rivaled only by Compositae or Asteraceae. The family is cosmopolitan but with many more species in the tropics than in the temperate regions. It has a varied range of life forms, including both green terrestrial species such as are familiar in temperate regions, and in addition a large number of epiphytes of great range of size, common in the tropics. Some orchids like Vanilla are lianas and many species of all life forms, including the large lianas, are achlorophyllus and are often regarded as saprophytic. The smallest orchids, Cryptoanthemis slateri and Rhizanthella gardneri , are completely subterranean including their flower buds and have a fresh weight of few grams at most; the largest orchid is said to weigh over a ton (J L Harley, 1983). Apart from the popular and some time bizarre flowers with complex pollination mechanisms, the orchids are remarkable for two characters: firstly their seeds are small, the largest is about 14 m g, and within them the embryo is little differentiated: secondly they are all mycorrhizal, living throughout life in association with fungi. -
