Denotes performance celebrating the centennial of ’s birth. Bernstein’s championing of Mahler’s symphonies was crucial to securing their place in the orchestral repertoire. His recorded cycle with the New York Philharmonic, and his later cycle with the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, London Symphony Orchestra, and Israel Philharmonic, remain touchstones. His Mahler performances at Symphony Hall and Tanglewood between 1948 and 1979 included the Second (“Resurrection”) and Ninth symphonies, and the Adagietto of Symphony No. 5, with the BSO, and the third and final movements of the Ninth with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra.
