76 4 Executive Summary NCGrowth conducted this report for Mitchell County to map the county’s outdoor recreation assets along with relevant businesses in order to identify gaps in assets and resources. NCGrowth also identified strategies and best practices for leveraging the county’s outdoor recreational assets. By identifying assets and opportunities the county will be able to create a strategic plan to leverage outdoor recreation as an economic development tool. By following these recommendations, Mitchell County will be able to increase and improve outdoor assets that attract visitors, new residents, and keep current residents. The county will also be able to increase the economic impact from recreation in the county. Much of the research that informed this report and the subsequent recommendations was conducted before the impacts of COVID-19 were felt. Due to these changes, some aspects of this report may have changed. Purpose The purpose of this report is to help Mitchell County, other local government agencies, funders, businesses, and community stakeholders to: 1. Gain a better understanding of Mitchell County’s existing outdoor recreation assets, identify future opportunities

Gain: 4,365 ft Parking: Park at Cane River Gap. 35.81020, -82.34838 By Trail Contributor: Zach Robbins The Big Butt Trail, despite its comical name, is a tough hike along the western peaks of the Black Mountains. Most hikers begin at the Balsam Gap trailhead on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the easier way to reach the viewpoints. This is seasonal access however, since the parkway is typically closed all winter in this section. Year-round access is possible at Cane River Gap, deep in the backcountry of the Big Ivy section of the Pisgah National Forest. You may think of the Big Butt Trail as the little cousin to the Black Mountain Crest Trail. It is shorter, not as difficult, and crosses peaks just below 6,000 feet. At the beginning you’ll face a long, switchbacking ascent through beautiful hardwood forests to the mile-high ridgeline between Big Butt and Little Butt. The Black Mountains form a U around the Cane River Valley, but all of the tall, well- known peaks are on the east side of the range. That doesn’t diminish the hike though, it provides arguably the best views of the eastern Black Mountains from Little Butt. After Little Butt the trail continues south past Point Misery then ends at Balsam Gap. From here you have the option of following the Mountains-to-Sea Trail east to a great view below the 6,320-foot Blackstock Knob.

    February 19, 2014 Nantahala and Pisgah NFs Assessment Aquatic Ecosystems The overall richness of North Carolina’s aquatic fauna is directly related to the geomorphology of the state, which defines the major drainage divisions and the diversity of habitats found within. There are seventeen major river basins in North Carolina. Five western basins are part of the Interior Basin (IB) and drain to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico (Hiwassee, Little Tennessee, French Broad, Watauga, and New). Parts of these five river basins are within the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests (NFs). Twelve central and eastern basins are part of the Atlantic Slope (AS) and flow to the Atlantic Ocean. Of these twelve central and eastern basins, parts of the Savannah, Broad, Catawba, and Yadkin-Pee Dee basins are within the Nantahala and Pisgah NFs. As described later in this report, the Nantahala and Pisgah NFs, for the most part, support higher elevation coldwater streams, and relatively little cool- and warmwater resources. To gain perspective on the importance of aquatic ecosystems on the Nantahala and Pisgah NFs, it is first necessary to understand their value at regional and national scales. The southeastern United States has the highest aquatic species diversity in the entire United States (Burr and Mayden 1992; Williams et al. 1993; Taylor et al. 1996; Warren et al. 2000,), with southeastern fishes comprising 62% of the United States fauna, and nearly 50% of the North American fish fauna (Burr and Mayden 1992).     Avery 17 The boundary line between Ashe and Wilkes was authorized to be changed in 1931. That the boundary line between the counties of Ashe and Wilkes, be, and the same is hereby, changed so as to include all the A. L. Miller land lying South of the public road running along the top of the Blue Ridge Mountain, except the A. L. Miller residence which is not in Ashe County, 70 in the County of Wilkes. An act repealing chapter 425 of the Public-Local Laws of 1931 relative to the boundary line between Ashe and Wilkes was passed in 1933. 71 AVERY Avery County was formed in 1911 from Mitchell, Watauga, and Caldwell. It was named in honor of Colonel Waightstill Avery, a soldier of the Revolution and attorney general of North Carolina. It is in the northwestern section of the State and is bounded by the state of Tennessee and the counties of Watauga, Caldwell, Burke, McDowell and Mitchell. The present area is 247 square miles and the population is 13,560. Commissioners were named in the act establishing the county who were to select two or more sites for the county seat after which the county commissioners were to hold an election and the people were to vote on the sites. Whatever site was selected, it was to be called Newland. Newland, the county seat, was named in honor of W. C.
