Volkswagen Amarok – now with V6 engine, new interior, infotainment and design

Six and a half years after its debut, the Amarok has been significantly updated, both technically and visually. The central element of the update can be found under the bonnet, where Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has given the pick-up a new powerful, fuel-efficient 6-cylinder TDI engine. A more athletic front end and a new instrument panel emphasise Amarok’s power. They give the vehicle a more upmarket feel, while the design is in line with the latest Volkswagen design DNA. Ergonomic, electrically 3 adjustable seats, new infotainment functions and safety features such as the Post-Collision Braking System are additional attributes of the new Amarok.

The new Amarok comes in three power levels. The agile responsiveness and beefy torque of the Amarok's V6 diesel engines satisfy customer demand for greater traction at low revs and combine this quality with surprisingly low fuel consumption. Maximum torque levels of 450, 500 or 550 Nm are already available at less than 1,500 rpm, for example. The power levels are 120 kW/ 163 PS, 150 kW/204 PS or a range-topping 165 kW/224 PS for Euro 6 markets, providing sufficient propulsive and towing power for any situation. At higher speeds, the long top gears of the manual or automatic reduce the engine revs and lower fuel consumption, thus helping to cut vehicle noise and lower CO2 emissions. The combined NEDC consumption of the new Amarok with 165 kW/224 PS and the 8-speed automatic gearbox is expected to be 7.6 litres of diesel per 100 km*, which equates to an outstanding 199 grams of CO2/km*.

At a length of 5.25 metres and a width of 2.23 metres, including the wing mirrors, the Amarok meets all the expectations of a classic pick-up. Striking features of the design and of the new instrument panel architecture include the emphasis on horizontal lines, the clear division of the surfaces and the precise folds and edges. The way the front section is divided is completely new. Doing away with round contours and concentrating on horizontal and vertical lines makes both the front and the interior appear more striking and pronounced. They make the Amarok more attractive as a pick-up and also appeal to Nutzfahrzeuge

customers who have been catered for by the traditional SUV segment in the past.

Every version of the new Amarok has a high and uniform level of safety features. Occupants are protected, for example, not just with driver and front passenger airbags, but – depending on the market – with side and thorax airbags as well. One example of the new features is the Post-Collision Braking System, which comes as standard. Nearly a quarter of all accidents involving injuries are collisions with more than one obstacle. Volkswagen’s multi-award-winning Post-Collision Braking System can help to avoid follow-on collisions or reduce their severity. Within the limitations of the system, Post-Collision Braking automatically applies the brakes after any collision, even before the driver is able 4 to react. The severity of a secondary accident can thus be reduced and, ideally, subsequent collisions avoided. The driver is able to take back control of the vehicle at any time.

Despite its impressive size, getting into the Amarok is easy. Doors that swing open wide and grab handles on the A and B-pillars help you climb into the cab. A glance at the instruments reveals a consistently horizontal design. This is due, first and foremost, to the lacquer bar that stretches from door to door and divides the dashboard into two levels. At the very top of the centre console, and thus directly in the driver’s field of vision, is the new infotainment system – optionally equipped with features such as App Connect, Guide & Inform and Car Net. Tis allows smartphone apps to be integrated via a USB interface to enable them to be accessed via the infotainment system’s touchscreen. Guide & Inform, for example, extends the navigation system by adding online-based, up-to-the- minute information services.

Inside, the Amarok has passenger car levels of comfort. Neither headroom nor legroom leave anything to be desired. This is, above all, thanks to the height- adjustable front seats, which can also be moved a long way back. They feature sporty contoured side bolsters that have been optimised to provide maximum comfort and ergonomic characteristics. The optional, electric driver and front passenger seats can be individually adjusted to suit personal body size. The seat height and longitudinal position can be adjusted at the push of a button, the degree and width of lumbar support can be changed and the backrest and seat cushion angle set and the seat depth can also be adjusted manually. Due to their Nutzfahrzeuge

Due to their ergonomic quality, which relieving strain on the back, these 14-way ergoComfort seats are recommended by the German Healthy Back Campaign (Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.) and have been awarded the ‘AGR’ seal of approval.

As with the previous model, the four-door Amarok’s cargo platform can accommodate a Euro pallet at right angles and – depending on the version – can carry a payload of over a ton. Some versions of the new Amarok will also be able to tow loads of up to 3.5 tons.

Painted in the vehicle’s body colour, the new sports bar on the launch model, which will be available in Europe under the name Amarok Aventura, makes the double cab appear to extend further towards the back thanks to its dynamic 5 design and, at the same time, covers part of the 2.52 m2 loading area of the cargo box. Various styling bars and covers will still be available for the Amarok’s cargo box, as well as cargo compartment coatings and hard tops.

The wheel sizes of the different versions of the Amarok have been increased and boost the appearance of the power athlete. The Amarok Aventura has 20-inch alloy wheels and is also equipped with a real-time tyre pressure measuring system and the Park Distance Control parking assistant, which is assisted by a reversing camera. In addition to the multifunction steering wheel with paddle switches, the ‘Premium Color’ combined display, the nappa leather seat covers and stainless steel pedal caps in the interior, the Aventura’s look is rounded off by Bi-Xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED number plate lights and LED-illuminated side sills below the doors.

Volkswagen Amarok – engine and drive system

The 3.0-litre V6 engine, fitted in the Amarok for the first time provides the pick-up with a thorough upgrade in terms of performance, emissions and fuel consumption. The pick-up, which is equally at home on-road as it is off-road, generates up to 550 Newton metres of torque and 165 kW/224 PS. With 24 valves and overhead camshafts, the power unit meets the latest Euro 6 emissions standard. The fuel-saving BlueMotion Technology comes as standard. Development objectives such as superior performance and greater ride comfort have also been implemented. An 8-speed 6 automatic transmission in combination with permanent all- wheel drive is also available.

The engine, with a cylinder angle of 90 degrees, was first used in the Audi A6 and A7 in 2014. The latest ‘Generation II Evo’ is especially robust. That’s reason enough to now put the latest version of the tried and tested and extremely reliable engine to work in the updated Amarok.

Thanks to a newly developed VTG turbocharger with flow-optimised turbine and adjustable vanes with less play, the engine promises smooth responsiveness under all load conditions and across the whole engine speed range. In combination with the highly advanced injection system and the special combustion process, this 3.0-litre, six-cylinder engine now both meets the applicable emission limits and the acoustic comfort and quiet running expected in a passenger car. A first in the pick-up segment. As a result of a special cylinder bore honing process and a newly developed package of piston rings with less downforce, the frictional losses inside the engine have been reduced by around ten per cent. An optimised cooling system with two separate circuits and thinner walls permits a shorter warm-up phase, which in turn saves fuel.

The agile responsiveness and beefy torque of the Amarok’s diesel engines also satisfy customer demands for greater traction at low revs and combine this with surprisingly low fuel consumption. For example, maximum torque levels of 450, 500 and 550 Nm are already available at well under 1,500 rpm, for example. Nutzfahrzeuge

The power levels are 120 kW / 163 PS, 150 kW / 204 PS or a range-topping 165 kW / 224 PS, providing sufficient propulsive and towing power for any situation. At higher speeds, the long top gears of the manual or automatic transmission reduce the engine revs and lower fuel consumption, thus helping to cut vehicle noise and lower CO2 emissions. The combined NEDC consumption of the new Amarok with 165 kW / 224 PS and with the 8-speed automatic gearbox is expected to be 7.6 litres of diesel per 100 km*, which equates to an outstanding 199 grams of CO2/km*.

Depending on the engine power, there are three different drive system variants: traditional rear-wheel drive; 4MOTION with rear-wheel drive and optionally engaged front axle combined with a six-speed manual gearbox; or 4MOTION 7 with permanent all-wheel drive and differential with 8-speed automatic transmission. All three variants have an electronic differential lock (EDL) by automatic application of the brake, which prevents the wheels spinning on one side. Thanks to the EDL, the power from the drive system is always delivered to the wheel with the best traction. As an option, Volkswagen also offers a mechanical rear-axle differential lock for demanding off-road use.

4x2: the Amarok with traditional rear-wheel drive is aimed at customers looking for a pick-up who otherwise use their vehicle primarily as a passenger car on- road. This version is only available with the 120 kW / 163 PS V6 TDI engine and six-speed manual gearbox and has the largest payload.

4MOTION: the all-wheel drive versions are best suited for off-road use. As a thoroughbred all-terrain vehicle for the toughest of challenges, the Amarok is available with on-demand all-wheel drive. This widespread solution in the pick- up segment, with a transfer box and claw coupling, delivers power rigidly between the axles at the push of a button. An additional off-road gear reduction function for the standard 6-speed gearbox combined with the 120 kW / 163 PS or 150 kW / 204 PS V6 engines permits extreme crawling pace movement, too. This is helpful when navigating complicated passages off-road and when scaling particularly steep inclines of up to 100 per cent (slope angle of 45°), which the Amarok is able to master, even when fully loaded.

Without pressing the button, the Amarok uses permanent all-wheel drive when driving on off-road terrain. In all operating conditions, its central Torsen Nutzfahrzeuge

differential ensures optimum distribution of the engine performance between front and rear axles to guarantee excellent driving dynamics on the road and high levels of traction off-road. Under normal conditions this is a ratio of 40:60. Under more demanding conditions, the power distribution may vary, depending on the surface. The permanent all-wheel drive in combination with the 8-speed automatic transmission can be coupled with the new V6 TDI’s two higher power levels (150 kW and 165 kW). The middle version is available with a choice of six- speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. The 165 kW / 224 PS Amarok comes exclusively with automatic transmission, while its 120 kW / 163 PS brother is only available with the manual gearbox.

Gearbox: depending on engine power, there is a choice of 6-speed manual 8 gearbox or 8-speed automatic transmission for the Amarok, both optimised for the high torque values. The large number of gears allows a greater transmission- ratio spread to be achieved than with a conventional automatic transmission. This has some very positive effects: thanks to smaller transmission jumps, the TDI engine works even more efficiently in every rpm range, as well as being more fuel efficient and agile. The eighth gear has been designed to have lower revs and thus be a low-noise and fuel-saving shift stage. The first gear is configured for pulling away, for off-road use and when towing. With automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive, the Amarok thus becomes perfectly suited for rough terrain – without needing any additional reduction gearing.

With the right combination of the different options of engine, drive system and transmission, the Amarok from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles cuts an equally good figure on- as it does off-road, as is demonstrated, for example, by its impressive climbing ability with the optionally engaged all-wheel drive and differential lock: even scaling 100 per cent inclines (slope angles of 45°) with a full load. The same applies to bumpy terrain: with slope clearance angles of 29° at the front and 24° at the rear, the Amarok scales steep inclines just as well as it copes with deep ditches, which – thanks to an off-road ground clearance angle of 23° – it negotiates with superior ease. And when driving through fords, it keeps wading through the water, even if the water is half a metre deep.

Volkswagen Amarok – interior, infotainment and cargo box

The key features of the interior of the new Amarok are the new ergoComfort seats for the driver and front-seat passenger, and a redesigned instrument panel: as always, the Amarok features materials that are both high-quality and hardwearing, as well as thought-out and ergonomic controls. The spacious double cab offers both commercial users and private customers a pleasant ambience combined with clearly laid-out instruments. 9 Despite its size, getting into the Amarok is easy thanks to doors that swing open wide and grab handles and steering wheel, which help you climb into the cab. Once seated, you feel like you're sitting in a normal car. Neither headroom nor legroom leave anything to be desired, and this is, above all, thanks to the height- adjustable front seats, which can also be moved a long way back. They feature sporty contoured side bolsters that have been optimised to provide maximum comfort and top ergonomic characteristics. The optional 14-way electrically adjustable driver and front passenger seats can be individually adjusted to suit personal body size. The seat height and longitudinal position can be adjusted at the push of a button, the degree and width of lumbar support can be changed and the backrest and seat cushion angle set and the seat depth can also be adjusted manually. These Amarok ergoComfort seats for the driver and front- seat passenger (fitted as standard in the Aventura launch model) have been awarded the ‘AGR’ seal of approval by the Healthy Back Campaign (Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.).

Doing away with round contours and concentrating on horizontal and vertical lines makes not only the front, but also the interior appear more striking and pronounced. Both make the Amarok more attractive as a pick-up and also increase the new vehicle’s appeal to customers who have been catered for by the traditional SUV segment in the past.

As is typical for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, everything in the cockpit is in just the right place. Ergonomics and ease of use are given top priority. Clearly laid-out and easy-to-read instruments, for example, provide information on Nutzfahrzeuge

speed and engine rpm. In the Amarok Highline and the Aventura launch model, fine chrome frames further underline the classy look and feel. In the middle of the dashboard, a large, easily readable digital display shows additional information, which can be expanded in four levels of detail. The combined display comes in a number of different versions: Standard, multifunction display (MFA), multifunction display “Plus”, and multifunction display “Premium”, with colour display as well as 3D navigation. The Premium Colour comes as standard in the Aventura. Also standard in the Aventura is the multifunction leather steering wheel with paddle switches, with which the driver can change the gears of the eight-speed automatic transmission without taking their hands off the wheel. The pedals in the Aventura's footwell come in stainless steel as standard. In combination with the 165 kW/224 PS engine and MFA Plus or Premium Colour 10 combined display, the Amarok now comes with the needle ‘nodding’ familiar from the GTI: when the driver starts the ignition before starting the engine, the needles of the combined instruments first briefly swing up as far as they will go, before then returning to their default setting.

A glance at the instruments reveals a consistently horizontal design. This is due, first and foremost, to the decorative lacquered strip that stretches from door to door and divides the dashboard into two sections. At the very top of the centre console, and thus directly in the driver’s field of vision is the infotainment system. There is a choice of two radios and one navigation system, starting with the ‘Composition Audio’ with a 5-inch monochrome display. This system features four loudspeakers in the front, an SD card slot, a USB socket, an AUX IN socket and the Bluetooth hands-free function.

The ‘Composition Media’ radio is better equipped, with six 20 watt loudspeakers in the front (4) and rear (2). The capacitive colour display is 6.33 inches in size and has a proximity sensor. The display also supports swipe and pinch zoom gestures, as used on smartphones. There are also four buttons on the left and right of the touchscreen; in comparison to those on the 5-inch system, they also provide access – depending on equipment features – to the ‘Phone’ and ‘Voice’ (voice control) menu levels. It also has an SD card slot, USB port and AUX IN interface. On top of this, the App Connect function makes it possible to forward selected smartphone apps and controls to the touchscreen display in the vehicle. App Connect supports Mirror Link, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. DAB+ is also available as an option. The ‘Discover Media’ navigation system, with an Nutzfahrzeuge

integrated navigation module, is the top-of-the-range infotainment system, available with navigation, Car Net mobile online services including traffic information, DAB+ and a second SD card slot.

Included with both ‘Composition Media’ and ‘Discover Media’ is a digital voice enhancement function. This electric voice amplification makes communicating during the journey easier. The hands-free microphone amplifies the voice signals so that the driver no longer has to turn to face the back-seat passengers or raise their voice. Passengers on the back seat hear the person’s voice amplified by the rear loudspeakers. This function can, however, also be deactivated.

Below the infotainment units are the controls for the heating and air 11 conditioning systems. Climatronic is also available as an option (standard in the Highline and Aventura). Four large vents allow the ventilation to be adjusted to suit individual preferences. The angular jets, like the round instruments in the Highline and Aventura, are surrounded by elegant chrome frames, as is the case for the gear lever surround. The additional functions for the 4Motion all-wheel drive and power transfer are located around the gear lever, where they are easy to reach and can be used intuitively. This includes the ESP switch, the off-road function and the optional mechanical differential lock.

Numerous storage compartments in the interior enhance the Amarok’s great suitability for everyday use. They satisfy practically every requirement thanks to their well thought-out positioning and shape. For example, 1.5-litre bottles can be stored in the front door compartments, while those in the back doors can hold 1-litre bottles. There are two cup holders on the centre console and, depending on the specifications for the Comfortline and above, another two positioned centrally on the ‘Cardan tunnel’ for the passengers in the back. The same applies to the storage bin under the padded armrest between the front seats. In addition to this, there is also a compartment under each of the front seats. There are 12-volt plug sockets and USB sockets for electrical accessories – depending on the trim level – in an easily accessible storage compartment on the instrument panel, behind the gear lever knob. There are also two sockets for back-seat passengers on the end of the centre console and even one on the cargo bed. Nutzfahrzeuge

The comfortable rear bench seat provides ample space for up to three people. The two outer seats each also have ISOFIX anchorage points for child seats. To provide additional storage space in the cabin, the seats can also be folded up, with a 1/3:2/3 split, and the backrest can also be folded down.

All standard trim version seats are upholstered in a range of different fabrics or leather. Faux leather, alcantara and real leather are available as options. In combination with the electrically adjustable ergoComfort seats, the Aventura launch model has nappa leather seats with ‘Ceramique’ stitching as well as special fabric floor mats bearing the model’s name.

In combination with the double cab, the cargo bed is 1.55 metres long and the 12 cargo box is 1.62 metres wide, allowing a Euro pallet to be loaded transversely, unique in the Amarok segment. Arithmetically, the cargo box has a loading area of 2.52 square metres and there is a lashing ring for securing the load fitted in each corner. Two additional lashing rings can be added as an option. The half- metre platform gate height boosts the good cargo capacity. This is due to the low sill height, an exemplary 0.78 metres. With a maximum gross weight of 3,080 kilograms, the Amarok is not only able to transport particularly bulky loads, but very heavy loads as well. The maximum payload is well over a tonne, and – depending on the overall configuration – it can also tow loads of up to 3.5 tonnes. Nutzfahrzeuge

Volkswagen Amarok – active and passive safety

The Amarok is based on a design that is typical of its segment, with the body, cargo bed, engine, gearbox and axles mounted on a central ladder frame. The specially developed ladder frame has an impressive, exemplary level of torsional rigidity, due to its closed longitudinal beam profiles and additional transverse beams with a closed cross-section. The latter are pushed through the longitudinal beams and welded into place, thus providing an optimum base for the greatest possible bracing against torsional forces. This also contributes to the Amarok’s robustness and reliability. 13

Every equipment version of the new Amarok has a high and uniform level of safety features. Not only does it protect its occupants with driver and front passenger airbags, for instance, but with side airbags as well. Special sensors in the front of the vehicle and side of the body reliably trigger the protective devices in any scenario, including staggered impact. The telescopic steering column is designed to absorb energy, thus reducing the risk of injury to the driver in the event of an accident. Servotronic steering, new to the Amarok and fitted as standard in Europe, helps the driver to control the vehicle very precisely, appropriately to the current speed, making it more agile to steer. Three-point safety belts, seatbelt pretensioner and height-adjustable head restraints are, of course, included as standard. In addition to this, the larger engines (165 kW and 150 kW) have disc brakes: 17-inch discs on the front axle and 18-inch discs on the rear axle, while the 120 kW version has 16-inch disks at the front and drum brakes at the rear.

The cab’s great stability comes from the generously sized cross-sections of the A and C-pillars. The decoupling of the cab and frame also results in optimum torsional flexibility. This is particularly for how the vehicle handles on rough terrain and for the level of noise inside the cab. The front axle consists of a double wishbone structure with cast pivot bearings. The long spring travel gives the Amarok very good off-road characteristics as well as allowing a high load- bearing capacity, optimum driving dynamics and driving comfort. Nutzfahrzeuge

There are two different suspension variants for the rear axle of the Amarok. The rear-wheel drive 4x2 version and the 4MOTION variants in Europe in general, for example, is characterised by an especially comfortable suspension. It comprises a so-called 2+1 trapezoidal spring, which provides a higher level of comfort in terms of cushioning, vibration and noise. In combination with the optional Heavy Duty suspension, the pick-up has a maximum permissible gross vehicle weight (GVW) of up to 3,080 kg. This variant consists of an especially durable 3+2 trapezoidal spring with three main and two auxiliary leaves – a tried and tested design used widely in the pick-up segment. The advantage of this is that, regardless of load weight, its progressive force/displacement characteristic means that it provides a permanently high level of ride comfort and protects against overloading, thus giving it a payload of up to more than one ton. 14

A new standard feature in the Amarok is the Post-Collision Braking System combined with Electronic Stability Control, which also comes as standard. Nearly a quarter of all accidents involving injuries are collisions with more than one obstacle. Volkswagen’s multi-award-winning Post-Collision Braking System can help to avoid such follow-on collisions or to reduce their severity. Within the limitations of the system, Post-Collision Braking automatically applies the brakes after any collision, even before the driver is able to react. The severity of any subsequent accident can thus be reduced and, ideally, avoided. The driver is able to take back control of the vehicle at any time.

Another new feature in the Amarok is the optional real-time tyre pressure monitoring system, which informs the driver of each individual wheel’s current tyre pressure before and during the journey using a wheel sensor mounted on each tyre inflation valve. The wheel sends readings to the control unit by wireless data link to provide information on the pressure of each tyre. Each sensor has its own ID to enable each tyre to be localised individually. If the tyre pressure is too low or there is a sudden loss of pressure, the driver is warned by visual and/or audible signals from the instrument cluster. The permanent monitoring ensures maximum safety. Ensuring the right tyre pressure also prolongs tyre life and reduces fuel consumption.

The electronic trailer stabilisation system is a sub-function of ESC. The system recognises any vehicle instability caused by a trailer being towed at excessive speed. As a result, the brakes are applied to individual wheels and the engine’s Nutzfahrzeuge

power output is reduced in order to stabilise the vehicle and trailer again. This allows up to 3,500 kilograms to be towed with maximum safety with a braked and 750 kilograms with an unbraked trailer with a tow bar load of up to 140 kilograms.

When driving on rough terrain, the engine management system with Hill Hold Assist ensures that the Amarok drives downhill in a controlled, safe manner by reducing engine speed and, if necessary, applying the brakes. Hill Hold Assist enables the Amarok to cope with extreme gradients safely and with ease. Taking the burden off the driver, it automatically keeps the vehicle’s speed at a constant walking pace. What’s more, new optional underbody protection ensures that if the front of the vehicle touches the ground, it simply slides over the obstacle. 15 The off-road function can also be used to activate the off-road ABS: the braking distance is significantly shortened by the longer braking intervals than in normal mode on unpaved roads, as the ground material forms additional wedges in front of the wheels, and the Hill Hold Assist, which is also fitted, holds the vehicle when the foot brake is released to provide comfortable starting-off without rolling back.

Easily forgotten, yet so important: load securing. The Amarok comes from the factory with four lashing rings fitted in each corner of the cargo bed as standard. Alternatively, six lashing rings are available as an option. An anti-slip mat, which also absorbs bumps and noise, is available in combination with a load compartment cover, or the optional Durabed coating, which not only protects against scratches, but also ensures a higher friction coefficient. For transporting objects that protrude beyond the cargo box a load sill guard is available as an optional extra. Nutzfahrzeuge

Volkswagen Amarok – a multitude of equipment versions – from utility vehicle to SUV

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles realigns the Amarok equipment lines to fit in with the Transporter and Caddy ranges. The former base vehicle will now be the Amarok Trendline, with the Amarok Comfortline and Amarok Highline above it. The top-of-the-range version is the Aventura, a special edition launch model. The comprehensive equipment lines are supplemented by a wide range of audio and navigation appliances, attractive alloy wheels up to 20 inches in diameter, plus special equipment and optional function 16 packages.

At a length of 5.25 metres and a width of 2.23 metres (including mirrors) the Amarok meets all the expectations of a classic pick-up. Striking lines and parting joints characterised by its purpose are typical design elements of a vehicle genre that ensures that man and materials get to where they are needed the world over. Although it is based on a solid ladder frame, it is, however, clear that the Amarok belongs to the Caddy, Transporter and Crafter family due to the common design language of the front end. Characteristic features include the emphasis on horizontal lines, the clear division of the surfaces and the precise folds and edges. The way the front section is divided is completely new: doing away with round contours and concentrating on horizontal and vertical lines gives the front an even more athletic and dominant appearance and makes the Amarok what it is: a workhorse dressed like a power athlete. That is underlined, for instance, by the Aventura launch model’s body-coloured sports bar, which replaces the roll-over or styling bar (also available). This dynamic design element is an optical extension of the Amarok’s cab to the rear, covering and flanking part of the cargo platform. The standard third brake light will in future be available for all equipment lines as an LED along with additional cargo bed illumination.

Trendline: the basic configuration is aimed primarily at commercial customers who see their vehicle first and foremost as a reliable work tool, be they manual tradesmen, landscape gardeners, forestry workers or, for example, architects, who need an off-road vehicle for driving on building sites. Nutzfahrzeuge

The rugged specification is shown by areas that are frequently touched or likely to be touched being deliberately left unpainted. The bumpers, door handles and wing mirror housings have a grained black finish, but there is a little chrome on the radiator grille as well as on the inside door handles. The rear bumper can, if preferred, be completely done away with, enabling the tailgate to be folded down a full 180 degrees, which makes it possible to back right up to loading ramps. Also strictly functional are the fabric seats with standard ‘Austin’ covers in titanium black, the mechanically regulated heating system in the interior and the 16-inch steel wheels with 205 tyres and six airbags fitted as standard. Inside the double cab, the practically-oriented approach is consistently complied with, without losing sight of the standards of modern vehicle manufacturing. This is reflected, for instance, in the high-quality and particularly hard-wearing 17 materials, such as the carpeted floor, which can be fitted with custom-fit rubber mats, if required. A complete ‘robust floor cover’, i.e. a rubber floor, is also available as an option. Electric windows, central locking and electrically adjustable heated wing mirrors all come as standard, as well as height- adjustable seats, rear window heating and the ‘Composition Audio’ radio with four loudspeakers. The largely black instrument panel also gives the interior an upmarket look and feel, while the well thought-out layout of the controls guarantees a perfect ergonomic working environment for the driver: the split folding rear bench seat makes flexible use of the passenger compartment as extra storage space easier.

Comfortline: the Comfortline equipment line forms the link between using the Amarok purely for work and driving the Amarok as a private car. It is generally characterised by higher level of comfort and a more elegant appearance. Visually, the Amarok Comfortline lives up to these expectations with its body- coloured door handles and wing-mirror housings, its front spoiler and a double chrome bar on the radiator grille. The 17-inch alloy wheels and 245/65 wide tyres, wheel arch extensions and the fog lights, which also come as standard, underline the all-rounder’s self-confident appearance. The double cab with tinted windows in the rear as standard has a wide range of extras to simplify or enhance motoring life, including partial leather trim, for instance on the multifunction steering wheel, the powerful, semi-automatic ‘Climatic’ air-conditioning system with electronic temperature control, the ‘Composition Audio’ radio with four loudspeakers, and the central locking system with remote control. Additional storage compartments under the front seats Nutzfahrzeuge

provide storage space for accessories, well hidden from prying eyes. Ride comfort is increased, especially on long trips, by the cruise control system and the padded storage compartment cover, which doubles as a central armrest. The multifunction display in the instrument panel offers useful additional information, such as the available range. Comfort is also enhanced by seats featuring ‘Kemisu’ fabric design (available in palladium), in combination with the interior trim panels in titanium black. If desired, customers can also opt for ' ‘Vienna Palladium’ or ‘alcantara’ leather trim in titanium black. No less than three 12 V power sockets are provided.

Highline: the top-of-the-range version of the Amarok is aimed at customers looking for a vehicle in the broad SUV segment that combines maximum 18 durability and robustness with the virtues of a traditional 4x4. To achieve this, the Highline combines extroverted, self-confident and upmarket design elements with particularly high-quality interior and exterior details, which also applies to the striking wheel arch extensions and the matching 18-inch aluminium wheels with 255/60 wide tyres. Along with the Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, a body-coloured front bumper, two double chrome bars near the top and bottom of the radiator grille, partially chrome- plated wing mirror housings, chrome trim around the fog lights and the partially chrome-plated rear bumper underline the high-class look. Smoked rear lights and LED number plate lighting continue this theme. The Highline also comes with four 12 V power sockets as standard, one is located on the central console in the rear passenger compartment. The very well specified Highline interior, building on the Comfortline specification, also shines with attractive details. Chrome trim, for example, forms the cowling of the gear lever in the central console, the edging of the air vents and parts of the multifunction steering wheel. The ‘Composition Media’ radio with six loudspeakers provides upmarket acoustic comfort as standard. A Bluetooth hands-free system, mobile online services such as Car-Net or App Connect and voice control are also included. The radio’s large screen relays the picture from the reversing camera, while the front and rear sensors (Park Distance Control or PDC for short) warn of any obstacles with the customary beeps when parking. The fully automatic Climatronic air conditioning system, which comes as standard, is responsible for ensuring a pleasant climate on board. The comfortable seats featuring delicate ‘Salipra’ fabric design and the interior finish are both in black. Also available as options are ‘Vienna Palladium’ Nutzfahrzeuge

or ‘Vienna Brown’ leather trim or titanium black ‘alcantara’ as well as the electric seats for the driver and front-seat passenger.

Aventura launch model: to mark the launch, there will, for a limited time only, be a top model with lots of extras, which takes the Amarok line-up to an even higher level. The most striking of these extras are the 20-inch wheels with wheel arch extensions and the body-coloured sports bar – a sporty extension of the double cab featuring the Aventura badge. A matt grey or blue paint finish is also available as an option. 4MOTION is emblazoned in large letters on the side of the cargo box, clearly indicating that this is an all-wheel drive vehicle. Bi-Xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights and chrome sill bars with integrated LED lighting to illuminate the exit area enhance the Aventura’s 19 appearance. The bed of the cargo box also has a matt black Durabed coating. In contrast, the B-pillar is gloss black, which – in combination with the tinted rear windows – forms a homogeneous side line. The interior is no less exclusive. Electrically adjustable ergoComfort seats in premium nappa leather, complemented by ‘Ceramique’ stitching dominate the interior of the double cab. On top of this comes a multifunction leather steering wheel with paddle switches, with which the driver can shift individually between the eight gears of the 165 kW/224 PS V6 engine’s automatic transmission. The ‘Discover Media’ navigation system and ‘Premium Color’ combined display with 3D screen and colour animations, which at the push of a button provides yet more informative operating data, always shows the best route to your destination. The Aventura is also, of course, available with mobile online services and, as already mentioned for the Highline: the Parkpilot automatic parking system with a reversing camera and sensors at the front and rear are also included. Stainless steel pedals, chrome electric window switches and floor mats bearing the Amarok lettering further enhance the interior of the top-of-the- range model.

Accessories and additional options: over and above the various equipment lines, Volkswagen is also offering a wide range of extras and accessories for complete customisation of the Amarok. In addition to step-by-step upgrades with features from other equipment lines and specially bundled packages, other extras available include a variety of cargo bed covers, designer roll bars, various wheel rim designs and sizes (up to 20-inches in diameter) and hard tops. Nutzfahrzeuge

A mechanical differential lock for the rear axle is also available, which improves off-road capability on surfaces with differing traction conditions. Other equipment options include an auxiliary water heater, an anti-theft alarm system, a towing hitch, the tyre pressure monitoring system and electrically retractable exterior mirrors, and for superstructure manufacturers, the pick-up is available as a CabChassis without a cargo bed or with an electrical interface that makes it easier to control special hydraulic power units and crane mechanisms, for example.

Colours: with twelve colour options, including eight metallic and pearl-effect paints as well as two new matt paint finishes, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers a comprehensive palette of bodywork colours. The selection begins with 20 the three plain colours ‘Candy White’, ‘Ontario Green’ and ‘Tornado Red’. The Amarok looks even classier in ‘Mojave Beige Metallic’, ‘Reflex Silver Metallic’, ‘Indium Grey Metallic’, ‘Starlight Blue Metallic’, ‘Chestnut Brown Metallic’ or ‘Deep Black Pearl Effect’. On top of this come further special colours such as ‘Ravenna Blue Metallic’ exclusively for the Amarok Aventura. The matt paint options are ‘Ravenna Blue’ and ‘Indium Grey’. All colours harmonise perfectly with the titanium black interior trims.

Seat covers: with eight different fabric, faux leather, alcantara and real leather covers, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is consciously creating a wide range of interior designs to match the paintwork options. The standard models alone, for instance, feature three fabrics: ‘Austin’, ‘Kemisu’ or ‘Salipra’ depending on the specification. Depending on the equipment line there is also an optional choice of faux leather, real leather, nappa or alcantara. The perforated black nappa leather set off with ‘Ceramique’ stitching for the standard electric seats is exclusive to the Aventura launch model. Nutzfahrzeuge

Hannover, 25 May 2016 – First shots of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Amarok Aventura on the move: the premium pick-up in the 21 B segment is powered in future by a latest generation V6 engine. In the interior the off-roader also offers customers lots of new features. These include an attractive cockpit, including a colour multi-function display for the Aventura launch model and state-of- the-art radio/navigation systems. For the driver and front-seat passenger, the Amarok also provides 14-way adjustable ergoComfort seats, which have already won awards for their back- friendliness.

Superior and robust: with its charisma and precision, the new Amarok will also thrill traditional SUV customers. At home both on and off the road, this pick-up achieves 550 Newton metres of torque and 165 kW / 224 PS at his highest power output level. It can reach a top speed of 193 kilometres per hour and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.

2 Amarok Aventura with award- winning ergoComfort seats: the 14-way electrically adjustable driver and front passenger seats (adjustable 12 ways electrically, 2 ways manually) can be individually and conveniently adjusted to personal body size. Nutzfahrzeuge

The pick-up is an attractive alternative thanks to its high seat position, good all- round visibility and high-quality interior. This is how elegant and comfortable driving both on and off made-up roads can be. And, despite its impressive size, getting into the Amarok is easy. Doors that swing open wide and – depending on the design variant – grab handles on the A and B-pillars help you climb into the cab.

One of the highlights of the new Amarok’s interior are the new electrically adjustable ergoComfort seats for the driver and front-seat passenger, which provide plenty of head and legroom. This is, above all, thanks to the height- adjustable front seats, which can also be moved a long way back. They feature sporty contoured side bolsters that have been optimised to provide maximum 22 comfort and top ergonomic characteristics. The optional electric 14-way driver and front passenger seats can be individually adjusted to suit personal body size. The seat height and longitudinal position can be adjusted at the push of a button, the degree and width of lumbar support can be changed and the backrest and seat cushion angle set. The seat depth can also be adjusted manually. The ergoComfort seats for the driver and front-seat passenger in the Amarok have been awarded the ‘AGR’ seal of approval by the Healthy Back Campaign (Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.). With nappa leather seat covers, contrasting Ceramique stitching and additional seat heating, the Amarok caters for discerning customers.

The redesigned instrument panel also immediately catches the eye: striking features of the design of the new instrument panel architecture include the emphasis on horizontal lines, the clear division of the surfaces and the precision of the folds and edges. Doing away with round contours and concentrating on horizontal and vertical lines makes the interior appear more striking and pronounced. Numerous storage compartments make life easier for the passengers.

2 Amarok Aventura in Ravenna Blue Metallic: 20-inch wheels, illuminated side sills and wheel arch extensions give the Amarok a strong appearance. Nutzfahrzeuge

The multifunction steering wheel also makes it easier for the driver to operate the radio, telephone or multifunction display. The Aventura launch model comes with a colour 3D display between the classic round instruments. The driver can use the new, optional paddle switches on the steering wheel (standard in the Aventura) to control the 8-speed automatic transmission, while the frameless rear-view mirror, in combination with the optional Light and Sight package, heightens the upmarket look and sporting character of the new Amarok’s interior.

At the very top of the centre console, and thus directly in the driver’s field of vision, is the infotainment system, allowing well thought-out, ergonomic operation. Equipped with features such as App Connect, Guide & Inform or Car- 23 Net, it is possible, for example, to integrate smartphone apps via a USB interface in order to be able to access them via the infotainment system’s touchscreen. Guide & Inform extends the navigation system by adding online-based, up-to- the-minute information services such as online traffic information. The ‘Discover Media’ navigation system also comes with DAB+ digital radio as standard.

Both the ‘Composition Media’ and ‘Discover Media’ infotainment systems come with digital voice enhancement. This electric voice amplification makes communicating during the journey easier. The hands-free microphone amplifies the voice signals so that the driver no longer, for instance, has to turn to face the back-seat passengers or raise their voice. Passengers on the back seat hear the person’s voice amplified by the rear loudspeakers.

The ‘Park Pilot’ parking assistance system, assisted by the ‘Rear View’ reversing camera, also makes life easier. Stainless steel pedals (exclusive to the Aventura)

1 Increasingly appealing to SUV customers: thanks to its high seat position, good all-round 1 2 visibility and high-quality interior the Volkswagen pick- up is an attractive alternative.

2 A good mover cross country, too: the Amarok Aventura’s new sports bar, also painted in the vehicle’s body colour, dynamically extends the double cab and forms the transition to the 2.52m2 loading area of the cargo box. Nutzfahrzeuge

and black trim, divided from door to door by a bar in contrasting colour, round of the appearance of the Amarok’s interior. Air-conditioning system, Bluetooth connection and up to four 12-volt power supply sockets are also included.

Prices for the new Amarok in Germany start at €25,720 net for the rear-wheel drive Trendline version with double cab, the V6 TDI and 120 kW (EU6, available from the second quarter of 2017), making them just €940 more expensive than the previous entry-level model with a with double cab and 103 kW TDI four- cylinder engine. The top-of-the-range Amarok Aventura with the V6 TDI and 165 kW engine, 4Motion all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic transmission comes to €46,525 net and will be launched at the end of September 2016.

Volkswagen Amarok now with a powerful six- cylinder engine • Premium pickup will be the only model in its segment with a high-performance V6 turbodiesel • Latest generation of six-cylinder engines with up to 165 kW and 550 Nm of torque • Amarok Aventura launch model to be equipped with a sports bar, 20-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights

Hannover, 2 May 2016 – Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is taking things up a notch: the Amarok – the premium pickup in the B 25 segment – is getting a bigger ‘heart’ and highlighting its performance potential, thanks to the latest generation of Volkswagen V6 engines. Drivers of the Amarok can look forward in future to the one litre of additional displacement offered by the 3.0- litre engine. The pickup boasts good on- and off-road capabilities. Its top-of-the-line engine delivers 550 Nm of torque and has an output of 165 kW / 224 PS.

Robust and reliable: the new agile V6 diesel engine for the Amarok meets the customer requirement for high torque at low engine speeds. The powerful top- of-the-line six-cylinder engine produces its maximum torque at only 1,500 rpm. At 550 Nm, this maximum torque is also 130 Nm higher than in the previous model. The Amarok is thus able to deliver sufficient propulsive power and torque performance in any situation.

1 Amarok Aventura with the current Volkswagen front-end design: the launch model (end of September 2016) will 1 2 initially be released with the most powerful engine variant (165 kW).

2 Amarok Aventura in Ravenna Blue Metallic as seen from the rear: the new body-coloured sports bar visually shifts the double cab rearwards and creates a transition to the 2.52 m2 load platform inside the cargo compartment. Nutzfahrzeuge

The highest gears' long gear ratio in the manual or 8-speed automatic gearbox reduces revs and fuel consumption during consistently fast driving, and in this manner helps ensure low noise levels and low CO2 emissions. The combined NEDC fuel consumption of the new Amarok with 165 kW output and a 8-speed automatic gearbox will likely reach a combined diesel consumption of 7.6 litres/100 km *. This corresponds to a new top level of 199 grams CO2/km *.

The model's engine is designed to be robust and long-lasting. The 3.0 l TDI engine (with exactly 2967 cubic centimetres displacement) in the new Amarok will be available in three output levels: 120 kW / 163 PS, 150 kW / 204 PS or a top-performing 165 kW / 224 PS. All engines comply with the Euro 6 emissions standard and replace within the scope of the EU6 standard for commercial 26 vehicles the previous 4-cylinder diesels. The most powerful engine variant will be offered first. As early as the end of September 2016, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles customers will thus be able to begin exploring the world of six-cylinder engines with an attractive model.

Three different drive-system versions will be offered in line with the respective engine variants: a traditional rear-wheel drive, and a 4MOTION version with either rear-wheel drive and an engageable front axle in combination with a manual gearbox, or with a permanent all-wheel drive system and a Torsen differential with the 8-speed automatic gearbox. The Servotronic steering system is new in the Amarok and will be available as standard equipment in Europe. This system is one of the reasons why the Amarok can be driven very precisely. New 17-inch brake discs on the front axle of the 165-kW Amarok and 16-inch discs at the rear ensure that the powerful pickup always comes to a stop quickly and safely. The Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, which has won multiple awards, is also included as standard.

1 V6 logo on the Volkswagen Amarok's redesigned radiator 1 2 grille: the latest generation six-cylinder engine delivers sufficient propulsive power and torque performance.

2 V6 with a cylinder-bank angle of 90 degrees: the 3.0l TDI that will be used in the upgraded Amarok produces 550 Newton metres of torque and has an output of 165 kW / 224 PS. Nutzfahrzeuge

The powerful impression the Amarok makes is underscored by a more athletic- looking front end and an all-new dashboard. Together with new ergonomic seats, they lend the vehicle a more sophisticated and valuable appearance. In addition, the model's design has the current Volkswagen DNA written all over it. With a length of 5.25 metres and a width of 2.23 metres (mirrors included), the Amarok delivers everything one would expect from a classic pickup.

The new body-coloured sports bar in the launch model (which will be marketed in Europe as the Amarok Aventura) visually shifts the double cab rearwards and also extends over a small part of the 2.52 m2 load platform inside the cargo compartment. Various additional styling bars, covers, cargo area coatings and hardtops are also available for the Amarok cargo compartment. 27

In addition, the load platform in the four-door Amarok can accommodate a Euro- pallet loaded sideways. A payload capacity of more than one tonne is possible, depending on the equipment features selected. In future, some variants of the new Amarok will also boast a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes.

The wheels in the various equipment levels offered with the Amarok are now larger, which makes for an even more powerful and sporty appearance. The Amarok Aventura features 20-inch alloy wheels and the Park Distance Control parking assistant, which utilises a rear-view camera. The overall impression of the Aventura is made perfect by bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED licence plate lighting and LED-illuminated side sills under the doors.

Amarok premium pick-up given the latest Volkswagen design • Comprehensively reworked 'inner values': updated interior designed to thrill

Hannover, 21 April 2016 – First sketches of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles design show where the journey is heading: the Volkswagen Amarok stands for premium performance in the pick-up B segment. A pick-up that drives as precisely as a passenger car and yet also has full off-road capability.

28 A more athletic front and a modified instrument panel emphasise the powerful Amarok look. They give the vehicle a more premium feel. With a length of 5.25 metres and a width of 2.23 metres (mirrors included), the Amarok fulfils all that is expected of a classic pick-up in both style and concept. The wheel rim sizes of the Amarok's different equipment levels are considerably increased and strengthen the appearance of the power athlete.

Striking features of the design and of the new commercial vehicles instrument panel architecture include the stressing of horizontal lines, the clear division of the surface areas and the precision achieved in the folds and edges. New here is the way in which the the front section is divided. Rejecting round contours and concentrating on horizontal and vertical lines makes the front and interior appear more striking and pronounced.
