What’s happening at Lake High?

Sharing Much More than Stories

During Reconciliation Week, a small but enthusiastic group of Lake Illawarra High School students were given the opportunity to immerse themselves in a valuable cultural excursion.

‘Sharing Stories’ is a theatrical representation of indigenous traditions, experiences and words of wisdom passed down through generations and performed on stage by local school students. Such performances provide us with a greater appreciation of reconciliation as a means of creating respectful relationships through an awareness of culture, language and storytelling.

Local Elder, Uncle Gee opened the performance with a ‘Welcome to Country’ and individually acknowledged regions North, South, East and West. We were then visually and aurally astounded by such presentations as ‘The Fishing Dance’, ‘The Stingray Dance’, and ‘The Story of the Little Boy Who Wouldn’t Share’ and ‘The Birth of The Butterfly’. However, it was Lake Illawarra High who stole the whole show with performances of their own creative genius known as ‘The Story of the Black Swan’ and ‘The Survival of the Flannel Flower’. Lake’s very own Denise Willis introduced both songs, recounting the purpose and importance of these stories to the cultural experience and connectedness to the land, animals and plants.

The success of the afternoon was clearly indicated by the excellent behaviour of our students, the vocal display of pride for our school and in the disappointment shown on their faces when we told them it was time to leave!

Multicultural Cook-off

On Friday 16th June, our annual Multicultural Cook-off was held. The Multicultural Council of Illawarra worked with Year 9 Food Technology to make food from Hungary, Macedonia, Lebanon, Cyprus, Greece and Portugal. The elders from each culture met with the students before the cook-off event to discuss what foods would be served, and shared stories about how they came to Australia. On the day students worked with the elders to prepare and cook all of the delicious food served to staff and invited guests.

The room was decorated with flags and maps of each of the countries and, at lunchtime, we all shared the food and enjoyed the connections we made with young and old. We are so grateful to the Multicultural Council of Illawarra for choosing our school to participate, and to the Shellharbour Club for their generous donation to the event.

Five word stories Year 9 have recently participated in a writing challenge and were asked to write a story using only five words. At first our students loved the idea of such a short word limit, but they soon discovered how hard it can be to tell a story in only a few words. We had some excellent stories submitted overall and our winner was Marina Bellef with this warming five word story: “He looked. I looked. Love.” A huge congratulations to Marina for her lovely submission! And well done to all students who entered the Five Word Story challenge.

Other notable entries: “Feelings don't last forever.” by Jessica Gorman “Looking up, I feel peace.” by Hollie “Judgement is powerful… and cloudy.” by Kyle McLean “I like chocolate. And you.” by Amber Britton

Science News

Year 10 students have continued to explore concepts relating to motion, forces and energy. The students have finished the unit by applying their knowledge of Newton’s Laws of Motion, designing and evaluating the design of balloon rockets.

A number of Year 9 and 10 students will be applying their design and evaluation skill set when participating in the Regional Science & Engineering Challenge, to be held at UOW in July.

Mr. Dyer is excited to welcome the newest addition to the Marine and Aquaculture curriculum! Students in Year 9-12 Marine Science subjects will have the opportunity to refinish a boat, through the application of fibreglass and other technologies.

Year 11 Biology students are currently investigating scientific theories surrounding the origins of life on Earth. They are pictured here creating a new display, which is a timeline of the last 4.5 billion years and depicts the evolution of organic compounds, cells and the diversity of past and present lifeforms.

“Respect, Responsibility & Safety” A Taste of Lake Day

On Thursday the 15th of June we held an introduction to high school life for local Year 6 students. We had 125 eager and excited students keen to try a day in high school. The day kicked off with Costa Georgiadis, the landscape architect from ABC’s Gardening Australia giving a presentation to the students who hung on his every word as he talked about life choices and how little things can affect the world around us. Throughout the day the Year 6 students experienced a selection of subjects from Agriculture to Science, Engineering and a whole school scavenger hunt to familiarise themselves with the school. It was an extremely exciting and interactive day. The students (and staff) were very excited to work with him, and Costa was extremely impressed with the school’s Agriculture programs and facilities. His live podcast, viewed by thousands of people in a range of countries, gives a tour and explanation of some of the opportunities the program offers students, and can be found on the LIHS Official Facebook Page.

News from the Harbour Centre

As part of the MCA’s Technology class, students were asked to design and create a scarecrow to be featured in our Agricultural Plot for the Year 6 Orientation Day at LIHS. The design brief was to create a scarecrow of “Costa” from the ABC Gardening show, the guest for the day.

The students created the scarecrow from mostly recycled products which included, wool from our sheep used to create Costa’s hair and beard, recycled clothing and hessian bags. During this process students learnt about design principles, environmental issues and gained skills to work as part of a team, whilst having a great time creating their very own scarecrow.

Tournament of Minds

Tournament of Minds is running at Lake Illawarra High again in 2017. This is the third year the school is entering teams and the students are excited to get involved again. The competition will run on Sunday the 20th of August at Nowra High School.

Tournament of Minds is a problem solving challenge-based program from students, running in all Australian states and internationally. Students have to work in teams of 7 to find solutions to open-ended challenges with complex criteria, requiring the use of innovative and divergent thinking strategies.

Teams are required to present their solution to selected long term challenges in a ten minute dramatic format to a public audience on Regional Tournament day. In addition to this, teams are required to present a solution to a Spontaneous Challenge that is only witnessed by their team and the judges in order to allow maximum focus on the team’s higher order thinking structures.

Stay tuned for final team announcements!

Technology & Applied Studies

On the 22nd May there was this pile of sticks in the woodwork room. It doesn’t look like much, but a considerable amount of work had gone into producing this pile.

Since then Year 12 Industrial Technology Timber students have been working extremely hard to get these projects to more advanced stages.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCE DAY AT UOW

Thanks to the In2uni team at , our Year 10 students had an opportunity to go to the university and be involved in different sessions and discover some possibilities of courses and be inspired to take charge of their future. Mr. Davis the Year 10 Year Advisor and I took a wonderful group of students to the university, who despite miserable weather, dripping clothes and lots of puddles, were great representatives of Lake Illawarra HS and participated in all activities in a positive way.

Students looked at degrees in Science, Business, Education, Law, Psychology and Health to name a few. The italks by current UOW students were fantastic and the relaxed atmosphere all added to the experience even though it was wet!!!

As always, I am here to help you.

SKILLS ROADSHOW

The Skills Roadshow came to Lake Illawarra HS to provide Year 9 and 10 students with career advice using the Skills Roadshow website or app. Luke from Skills Road, who has been driving all around NSW in a pimped up 4WD pulling a caravan billboard, visited selected local schools and communities, Lake Illawarra HS just happened to be one of them. He had a very interesting story of many different jobs and inspired students to make the most of opportunities that come their way.
