Then follows the 2003-2004 College Annual 77 Editorial Memories are important. They say your school days are the best of your life. So too, the task of capturing the memories of these years is of great importance to us. Every St. Mary’s College Annual is published retrospectively but the production of these particular volumes is very late indeed. The ideal way to record memories is quickly. They fade with the passing of time. Working on the 02/03 and 03/04 Annuals after such a length of time has been difficult; records have been filed away, memories are rusty and some things which we would like to have included are simply gone.

We have done our best and have been assisted by many staff, pupils, past and present and parents who have raided attics for lost photos, racked their brains to put names to faces and, most importantly, offered their support in producing these memories.

We must apologise to those students whose photos are not in this annual, some of the originals have gone missing. We can only assure you that the more recent files are intact and that future annuals will have your photo in them. Where possible we have included classes that do not have formal photos by using as many informal photos of them as possible.

How did this all happen? One is reminded of the old joke, with three hapless individuals called somebody, nobody and everybody. Everybody thought somebody was doing it, somebody nearly did it but in the end nobody did it. This situation has now been corrected.

It has taken the organisational skills of Leonie Blackburn and, the proximity to the action of, your Editor to gather all that remains and put it together into this volume. We hope it will stand well with the rest on the shelves of the wider St. Mary’s family. And, to a greater or lesser degree, it will allow us to relive the memories that are so precious.

These Annuals are dedicated to the individuals and groups that made the development of the Fr. Barry Hall and the extension to the Senior School possible. This is particularly fitting as the development spanned the two academic years. The hall is a remarkable addition to the school buildings.

Special thanks are due to the many that helped this Annual see the light of day; but in particular Fr. John Flavin, Clive Byrne, Liam Naughton, Brian Wall, Colm Sweeney, Denis Murphy, Isabel Kelly, Pauline Fox, Georgina Collins, Mary O’Donnell, Marian Fitzpatrick and a host of current and past students. Without their help the pages you hold would be empty.

On a technical note, these Annuals represent a record of the 103rd and 104th Academic Years of the College’s operation. It is not 103 years since the College opened but it was closed for a decade during the last century. We have also abandoned the idea of numbering the Volumes of the Annual as the years themselves are the best reference. Keen observers will also notice that the description of the Arms of St. Mary’s has changed. Rest assured we have not changed the crest, rather made its description a little more user friendly.

JOHN NISBET, Editor, 2003 and 2004 College Annuals The Arms of the College

SYMBOLISM The Escutcheon is quartered. On the right base (as you observe it) there is the unchangeable five point silver star with golden rays, symbolic of fidelity to its purpose of shedding light and guidance in the pursuit of Him Who enlightens every man and Who is the “Bright and Morning Star”. (Apoc XXII. 16).

The upper right bears the Cross, the emblem of trials and difficulties. It is in gold on a silver ground, symbolic of the precious outcome of trials well borne. These two symbols combine to produce the College motto: “Fidelitas in Arduis” (Fidelity in Difficulties).

On the upper left quarter there is the Dove in silver, symbolic of the Holy Ghost, from which descend seven golden rays, the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, essential in the practice of “Fidelitas in Arduis”.

The left base bears a red heart transfixed with a sword and encircled with golden roses. This is symbolic of the Holy Heart of Mary, suffering - the supreme purely human type of “Fidelitas in Arduis”. The golden roses symbolise the reward that comes from such fidelity.

HERALDIC DESCRIPTION On the Sinister base, on a ground Azure, a five point star, Argent, with emanating rays, Or. on the upper Sinsiter, a Cross, Or; on a ground Argent. On the Dexter chief, the Dove of the Holy Ghost, Argent, descending rays, Or, ground Azure. On the Dexter base, Heart Gules; sword Proper; wreath, Or, ground Argent.

Shield: Quarterings Or; Scroll outline Or, with ground Argent. Lettering Gules. Entire shield of Escutcheon Or. DEDICATION to all who helped our Development Programme

As we celebrate the opening and initial usage of the Fr. Barry Hall and the adjacent development, it is right that we should dedicate these Annuals to all those who supported us so magnificently in making this enterprise possible. Most particularly, we salute the parents of current pupils for their exceptional generosity in their response to our Fundraising Campaign. We remember too the Project Committee members, together with the architect, surveyor, builder and other service providers. We trust that our students and other users of the new facilities will appreciate their work and contribution, and respect the magnificent amenities provided for them. 6 ST.
