MINISTRY IDEAS Churches, associations and mission groups all over are involved in some amazing ministries. These are just a few examples to spark you imagination. What ministries have you come up with for your marketplace?

International Students There are many ways you can minister. ESL classes, holiday meals, conversation clubs for friendship and practice in English, shopping trips and movie nights. There is a tremendous need for opportunities for international students to visit an American home

Crisis Pregnancy Center From baby showers for the center to mentoring and teaching Bible studies, there are many ways to be a part of this ministry.

Hospital Waiting Room Some ministries include being present in the surgical waiting room for assistance to families and prayer support, providing coffee, water and snacks, magazines, coloring books and toys or personal care items. Also creating guides for local housing and restaurants.

Christmas Present Wrapping People can hardly believe it is free but it gives an opportunity to share the real reason for the season. It can work if your church is located near a shopping area, or just asset aside a night and invite the community. This can be a real service for seniors.

School Shoes Not every child has new shoes to start the school in, or shoes for their chosen sport. School counselors can help you find children with these needs.

Homework Clinic/Tutoring Program This is a wonderful ministry for teachers. Some churches have integrated this ministry into the whole church and use it as an outreach.

Ministry to Women Prisoners The needs of women prisoners are very different than those of male prisoners. Helping them keep in touch with their children and providing a woman-to-woman connection can change lives.

Encouraging Law Enforcement We appreciate what they do but we do not often tell them. Cookies, notes of encouragement, little gifts to tell them how grateful we are can be a special ministry.

ESL (English as a Second Language)

21 You will need special training for this, but with the changing face of our communities, this is a great way to get to know your neighbors.

Mentoring Young Mothers Many young mothers are far away from their own mothers and many never had a mother teach them how to nurture. You can fill that gap.

Nursing Home Visiting, Sunday School classes, current events groups, the needs are many in a nursing home.

Teacher Prayer Calendar Ask the teachers in your local schools if they would like to be prayer for. My guess is they will probably be thrilled.

Clothes Closet Matching up those who have plenty with those who have needs is very rewarding. There are people in every community who fit these categories.

Food Pantry In our land of plenty there are still people who are hungry. There is always work to do in an existing food pantry ministry organizing, collecting, meeting with clients. If your community does not have a food pantry think about how one could be started.

College Fellowship Meals Check with your local Baptist Campus Ministry. They often need churches or groups to sponsor meals. Home cooking is a tremendous draw for college students.

Emergency Care Bags Your hospital emergency room may need care bags for all kinds of emergencies. Rape victims may have special needs only other women can understand.

Truck Stop Ministry Tracts, bottled water, coffee or fellowship, people on the road need to hear some good news.

Community VBS Not every child will be brought to your church’s Bible School. Whether in English or Spanish, you can reach children who would never come to church.

Christmas Gift Shop Helping families struggling to have gifts at this special time of year can be a way to open their hearts to the real meaning of Christmas.

Ministering to At-Risk Youth

22 Your local juvenile detention center is a place where birthday cakes, thinking of you cards, and friendship are in short supply. Some people just need to hear the simplest words of encouragement.

Literacy This is another area where special training is required, but there are many people in your community who can not read. You can help them.

School Supplies Many schools post supplies lists at local stores. Teachers would appreciate packages of supplies for their students who cannot afford them.

Ugly Quilts Famous in several associations, these quilts go to homeless people (no one steals an ugly quilt) on mission trips, and to newborn babies. Use your sewing talent for this kind of fun.

Habitat for Humanity You may not be much at swinging a hammer, but how about furnishing a kitchen with dish towels and kitchen gadgets. Or maybe you could prepare a meal for the first night in the new home. Get to know the new homeowners.

More Ideas to put faith in action...

Have a Party Invite neighbors, co-workers, ball team moms, or others you meet in your daily life to a party in your home. Have a theme, make decorations, good food, and provide a comfortable atmosphere. Take this opportunity to tell these women about the good news of Jesus Christ in this relaxed, non-threatening setting. Page Hughes’ book, Party with a Purpose , soon to be released by New Hope Press, is chock full of ideas if you need them.

Help a School Every community has a school and every school has needs. Principals and guidance counselors can let you know about special projects and needs in the school. Provide school supplies, drive children on a field trip, read to younger students, or listen to beginning readers as they read. Find out who needs hew shoes to start school.

Hug a Bear Collect or make teddy bears to distribute to ambulance companies, DHR, or hospital emergency rooms, any place where children are in crisis. Plastic bags that say, “Given in the name of Jesus” and “Letting you know someone cares for you” can be purchased from Alabama WMU for $0.25 cents each.

23

Bake Some Cookies Get together with other cookie bakers once a month to make cookies to distribute. The cookies can go most anywhere people would appreciate a freshly baked cookie. Fire departments, police precincts, hospital waiting rooms, college dormitories, Ronald McDonald houses, and retirement centers, the list is endless.

Clean a Closet We all have clothes we no longer wear and figuring out who might need them can be very rewarding. Maternity clothes and baby items are sought by crisis pregnancy centers. Your children’s outgrown sports equipment would be appreciated by a community sports program or YMCA for children who want to play but cannot afford the equipment. Coats and warm clothing might be needed by a Hispanic ministry for families recently arriving from warmer climates. Be creative in how you distribute your finds. It is great to know that you have taken things where they are really needed.

Welcome a Newcomer Over 25% of the population moves each year. Most neighborhoods have newcomers from time to time. Take a plate of cookies or even a meal, if you have time, and meet the family. Invite mom to a bible study, give her advice on schools and dry cleaners find out the family’s needs and just be a new friend.

Train to Evangelize It is vitally important that we be prepared to share our faith. Check into HeartCall, a life witnessing and personal evangelism training for women. Learn to use your everyday activities to bring Christ to the world.

Mentor a Young Mother Locate a young mother who does not go to church. If your church or community has a seeker Bible study, invite her to go and bring her to the meeting. Pick her up and make sure childcare is available. Check on her during the week. Provide her with Christian parenting materials. Talk with her about how a relationship with Christ helps a woman to be a better mother. Talk about her need for personal salvation.

Love a Latchkey Child Love a latchkey child by calling her everyday to make sure she gets home from school safely. Make your home a “safe house” where latchkey children can come if they are sick or scared. Tell them and their parents you are doing this because you care about them and Jesus cares about them, too.

Help a Woman in Crisis Save make-up samples and trial size personal items for women in your local city or county jail. Create rape crisis kits that contain deodorant, , (clothing is

24 often kept for evidence) Kleenex and change for the telephone to take to hospital emergency rooms. Find out the needs from your local domestic abuse center.
