Commencing with the opening of baseball season in April, Hyundai joined the Boston Red Sox and launched the Strike Out Cancer Campaign to raise money and awareness for the Jimmy Fund. For every strikeout pitched by a Red Sox pitcher, Hyundai will donate $50.00 to the Jimmy Fund. So far, the Sox pitchers have thrown 300 strikeouts, raising $15,000. Hyundai hopes the campaign will raise about $60,000, by the end of the season, if the Sox beat their strikeout record of 1,165, set in 1996. “The recent news about a possible cancer cure is just one more reason the Jimmy Fund deserves everyone’s support, and Hyundai is proud to join the team in the fight against cancer,” said Mike Tocci, Eastern Region General Manager for Hyundai Motor America. “More importantly, Hyundai is proud to support ways to scientifically improve the quality of our lives, because that is how we build our cars.” The Strike Out Cancer Campaign is being promoted on TV and radio through Hyundai sponsorships with the Red Sox on WABUTV (and affiliated stations) and WEEIAM radio (and affiliated stations) throughout the campaign and baseball season, which ends in September. Many Hyundai dealers in the region are also working to raise money for the Jimmy Fund. “Throughout the last 50 years, caring companies, such as Hyundai, have enabled the Jimmy Fund to support pioneering discoveries in cancer research at the DanaFarber Cancer Institute,” said Mike Andrews, executive director and chairman for the Jimmy Fund. “We are excited that Hyundai has teamedup with Red Sox Radio to ‘Strike Out Cancer’ through this unique onair promotion. We are certainly hoping for another recordbreaking year.” Hyundai is also donating a 1998 Sonata or Tiburon as a raffle prize for tickets that will be sold at over 75 golf tournaments, which the Jimmy Fund is organizing this summer. The raffle is expected to raise an additional $50,000. Recognized as New England’s favorite charity, the Jimmy Fund was founded in 1948, when the Variety Club of New England joined forces with the Boston Braves baseball team to help a young cancer patient named “Jimmy.” When the Braves moved to Milwaukee in 1953, the Boston Red Sox, under the leadership of owner Tom Yawkey, made the Jimmy Fund their official charity. Hyundai Motor America, based in Fountain Valley, Calif., is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company of Korea. Hyundai cars are distributed in the United States by Hyundai Motor America and are sold and serviced through nearly 500 dealerships nationwide. ###.
