ABSTRACT This research aims to make a commented translation of the anthology Amphigorey, written by Edward Gorey. In order to make this happen, a study about the author writing style was made. This study shows that there are references about different literary genres and periods in his works. Among the characteristics found in the anthology, the nonsense genre, the comic gothic genre and humor were the main discussed ones. In order to make the translation, Literary Translation Theories were researched. Based on them, a translation projected was developed, This translation project aims to recreate poetical elements in the texts, as rhymes and rhythms, and to keep the main semantic idea of each text. The analysis of the translations was based on the categories suggested by Mário Laranjeira (1993): semantic fidelity, linguistic and structure fidelity and rhetorical and form fidelity, which are necessary to reach the semiotic textual fidelity. The translation of the anthology had different elements recreated, as the proper names, the titles and the neologisms; some structure changes were made in order to recreate rhythm and sound; and some of the rhythms of the texts were recreated to keep the main idea of the texts and the inter-relation between the texts and the images. The author himself illustrated the anthology, because of that, it was proposed a study about the illustrations as intersemiotic self-translation, based on the assertion that the author used to write before illustrating. The study of the illustrations was also based on the theories of Literary Translation, and on the Intersemiotic Translation Studies. In conclusion, it was possible to translate the anthology, but it was necessary to analyze what could be recreated and how it could be done. It was possible to keep the rhyme schemes, recreating alliterations and rhythms. The punctuation was kept most of the times, what helps to keep the rhythms. As an intersemiotic self-translator, Gorey developed in his pictures what he wanted to focus. Some of his illustrations are based on pieces of the verbal text. Sometimes, the text focuses on details of the illustrations, connections that were kept in some of the translations that were made by us. The reading of the anthology shows that verbal text and non-verbal text are inter- related elements. Besides writer and illustrator, Gorey was also a graphic artist and a designer, and he knew the whole process of books creation. Because of that, it is possible to see that he also could express himself through the types and hand lettering he made. Key Words: Edward Gorey. Anthology. Literary Translation. Intersemiotic Translation. Self- translation. GENRE GAMES: EDWARD GOREY'S PLAY WITH GENERIC FORM BY EDEN LEE LACKNER A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2015 Page 1 of 216 Page 2 of 216 ABSTRACT Genre Games: Edward Gorey's Play with Generic Form This thesis examines Edward Gorey's play with form and content across five literary genres, how that play results in the style that has come to be known as the "Goreyesque" and how the Goreyesque has influenced later artists and writers. Gorey consistently places style ahead of thematic and moral considerations, removing the purpose of each genre to reveal what remains in its absence. In doing so, Gorey maps out the boundaries of each form, providing genre- and period-specific details that act as signposts to how his audience should approach each narrative. With these markers in place, Gorey's readers are thus made aware of which genre expectations rule each piece. These expectations, however, are undermined as Gorey removes the audience-understood literary endgame, so that the work appears in all respects to be an accurate representation of the chosen genre, yet is missing the central heart. Gorey's melodramas present scenarios in which deep familial loss and suffering are at the forefront of each narrative, yet as a result of the distance that Gorey places between the text and his readers, these works ultimately lack sentimentality. His Dickensian narratives, while populated with virtuous orphans and embittered, isolated men, lack moral pronouncements and just rewards, resulting in exceptionally bleak, nihilistic endings that provide little or no social commentary.

Following last year's publication of The Haunted Tea-Cosy: A Dispirited and Distasteful Diversion for Christmas, Edward Gorey '50 told an interviewer from Newsday, "I wouldn't buy [the book] as a present, but then apparently they're hoping for lots of people to." While the interviewer interpreted this comment as intended "impishly," I could as easily believe that Gorey meant what he said. Until then, the little books that Gorey writes and illustrates had been reliable delights; The Haunted Tea-Cosy stands out as the least interesting of his work. The Headless Bust is the sequel to The Haunted Tea-Cosy, continuing the story of Edmund Gravel and the Bahhumbug and marketed in the same way.

EDWARD GOREY HOUSE 2019 EXHIBITION S PONSORSHIPS Hippity Wippity Edward Gorey and the Language of Nonsense OUR 2019 EXHIBIT, which opened April 11th, looks at Edward Gorey as one of the primary creators of Nonsense literature. Not just following in the footsteps of Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll, Gorey produced a striking body of serious Nonsense that absorbed countless influences and styles — transforming the genre into a very contemporary meditation on life, death, social mores, and things falling from the sky. The House extends its profound gratitude to all of those who sponsored our 2018 exhibit Murder He Wrote which was viewed (and definitely enjoyed) by well over 10,000 visitors last year. Sponsors of our cases have their names attached to the case as a way to show that you care more than a lot of people. It makes you a patron of the arts and it gives you and your family free admission to the House all year. If all that makes you feel special—that’s because you are. If you’ve visited the House and have a specific unlisted out-of-the-box item you want to sponsor—our scavenger hunt (or even a character in the scavenger hunt, our scavenger hunt pencils, our magnolia tree, our Halloween Art Contest album, or maybe our elephant coffeetable—then give us a call or send us an email.
