UBC High Notes Newsletter of the School of Music at the University of British Columbia Fall 2012 Director’s Welcome Welcome to the fourteenth edition of High Notes, celebrating the recent activities and major achievements of the faculty and students in the UBC School of Music! I think you will find the diversity and quality of accomplishments impressive and inspiring. A major highlight for me this year is the opportunity to welcome three exciting new full-time faculty members. Pianist Mark Anderson, with an outstanding international reputation gave a brilliant first recital at the School in October.Jonathan Girard, our new Director of the UBC Symphony Orchestra, and Assistant Professor of Conducting, led the UBC Symphony Orchestra in a full house of delighted audience members at the Chan Centre on November 9th. Musicologist Hedy Law, a specialist in 18th-century French opera and ballet is, has already established herself well with students and faculty in the less public sphere of our academic activities. See page 4 to meet these new faculty members who are bringing wonderful new artistic and scholarly energies to the School. It is exciting to see the School evolve through its faculty members! Our many accomplished part-time instructors are also vital to the success and profile of the School. This year we welcome to our team several UBC music alumni who have won acclaim as artists and praise as educators: cellist John Friesen, composer Jocelyn Morlock, film and television composer Hal Beckett, and composer-critic-educator David Duke. They embody the success of our programs, and the impact of the UBC School of Music on the artistic life of our province and nation. -

The tie that binds Wilfrid Laurier University since 1926 Volume 52, Issue 16 Wednesday, November 23, 2011 thecord.ca CHRIS MANDER STAFF WRITER The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks' men's basketball team are putting forth an impressive start to the sea son, with their record now standing at4-0. On Friday evening, in front of a large crowd for their home opener, the Golden Hawks dismantled the Queen's Gaels with ease by a score of88-62. The Hawks never trailed Queen's at any point in the game, and were able to capitalize on several sloppy turnovers by the opposition. Head coach Peter Campbell was impressed with his team's perfor mance for the most part. "I thought at times we played re ally well, and at other times we played like we were ahead by a lot and lost our focus;' said the coach. The leading scorer for the Hawks was Maxwell Allin who had 15 points to go along with six assists; good enough for tops in both cat egories for the evening. Saturday afternoon was much of the same story, as the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins came to the Laurier blows out RMC 130-72, Laurier Athletic Complex and, de spite their best efforts, fell short by a recording the most points scored in devastating score of 130-72. BIOGRAPHIES Krisztina Szabó mezzo-soprano Hungarian-Canadian mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó is highly sought after in both North America and Europe as an artist of supreme musicianship and stagecraft, and has become known for her promotion and performance of contemporary Canadian works. She exemplifies today’s modern singer: vocally versatile, paints vivid character portraits on both the opera and concert stages, and a stellar interpreter of new music. Among her many laudatory reviews, Opera Canada declared her to be an “exceptional talent” after her performance of the title role of Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, and after a performance with Tapestry Opera, the music blog, Schmopera wrote that “her instrument is one- of-a-kind and she has cemented herself as a darling of Canadian experimental music and opera… her sensibility and sensitivity to the material is truly inspiring.” In her hometown of Toronto, Canada, she has been nominated twice for a Dora Award for Outstanding Female Performance. -

We are humbled to perform at the closing ceremony of the Invictus Games in September, and look forward to performing two concerts with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in November and March. In spring 2018, the Toronto Youth Choir, celebrating its 5th anniversary, will perform in New York City with The King's Singers at the legendary Carnegie Hall. -

He is a prize-winning, Juno-nominated Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre and a celebrated and highly innovative Artistic Director of Turning Point Ensemble, renowned for deeply-researched and visionary programs. He has conducted more than 250 premieres by Canadian composers and is a respected member of the faculty at The School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University, where he has served as Director of the School for the Contemporary Arts, and was recently Dean Pro Tem of the Faculty of Communication, Art & Technology. Early in his Vancouver tenure, he was Co-programmer of the New Musica series at the Western Front and began conducting concerts with Vancouver New Music and the CBC Vancouver Orchestra. -

Biography Ivars Taurins, Director, Tafelmusik
BIOGRAPHY IVARS TAURINS, DIRECTOR, TAFELMUSIK CHAMBER CHOIR Equally at home conducting symphonic and choral repertoire, Ivars Taurins is founding director of the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, now in its 36th season. He was also a founding member and principal violist of the Tafelmusik Orchestra for its first 23 years. Under his direction the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir has been widely praised for its clarity, nuance and brilliance. Principal Baroque Conductor of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra from 2001-2011, Ivars Taurins is also active as a guest conductor with orchestras and choirs across Canada. Guest appearances include the Edmonton, Victoria, Winnipeg, Kitchener-Waterloo, Windsor and Saskatoon Symphonies, Calgary and Hamilton Philharmonics, Orchestra London Symphony Nova Scotia, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Canadian Chamber Ensemble, Thirteen Strings (Ottawa), Vancouver Chamber Choir, Pro Coro Canada, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Winnipeg Singers, the Elora Festival Orchestra and Singers, and most recently at the fortieth anniversary of the Festival International de Musique Baroque de Lamèque. Mr. Taurins was director of the 2012 National Youth Choir of Canada, touring Ontario and Quebec. He was also director of the 2000 and 2009 Ontario Youth Choir, the 2003 Nova Scotia Youth Choir and the 2004 Alberta University and College Choir, as well as guest director of the Nova Scotia, Calgary and London Youth Orchestras. In 2016, he directed Handel’s Alcina for the Glenn Gould School vocal program and the Royal Conservatory Orchestra, collaborating with veteran stage director Leon Major. In September 2011, Ivars Taurins was guest choir director for the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, preparing a combined chorus of Tafelmusik Chamber Choir and members of the OSM Chorus for performances and a recording (Analekta) of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, directed by Kent Nagano at the gala opening of the new Maison symphonique in Montreal. -

Program Notes by Cris Inguanti (2021) IGOR STRAVINSKY (1882-1971) Octet for Wind Instruments The first period of Stravinsky’s compositions was suffused with the exoticism of Russian music, from its dazzlingly colorful orchestration to its use of evocative folk songs, often layered one on top of the other. The culmination of this period was his Rite of Spring, premiered in 1913. Soon after moving to France, however, Stravinsky turned away from this esthetic of gigantic orchestral forces, spiritualism, and transcendentalism, so clearly apparent in the Rite. -

Our magical little Murray Adaskin Salon has transported us back to a time of ancient legend explored vividly through Heather Pawsey’s brilliant one-woman show, perfectly expressed through Jeffrey Ryan’s Unheard, right up into the frozen, snow-drenched mountaintops of the Andes, through Lloyd Burritt’s powerful opera Miracle Flight 571. We have sailed with the salmon down BC’s mighty rivers in Murray Adaskin’s A Wedding Toast, and flown through the soaring Pines of Emily Carr so beautifully illustrated through the lyrics of Dorothy Davies — “from root to sky, no twist, no deviation”— and evoked so magisterially by Jean Coulthard’s elegiac music.
