HIS INTRIGUING HALF-PORTRAIT IS A NEW addition to the small extant ouevre of Helmich van Tweenhuysen II. A bearded cleric of Eastern-European appearance looks directly out at the viewer with a penetrating gaze. He is dressed in a tall soft cap and dark Trobes, augmented by thick sash and a crucifix on a chain. Although his dress is relatively sober, the rich velvet of his cap, glinting colours of the chains around his neck and cap suggest that the sitter is a figure of wealth and importance. Currently the sitter’s identity remains elusive. He appears in another very similar portrait by van Tweenhuysen in the Muzeum Narodowe in Wroclaw, Poland. In the Wroclaw portrait, the sitter turns in the opposite direction, and his right hand rests upon a book, but he is dressed in the identical restrained but luxurious costume. -

Malebranche's Augustinianism and the Mind's Perfection Abstract This dissertation presents a unified interpretation of Malebranche’s philosophical system that is based on his Augustinian theory of the mind’s perfection, which consists in maximizing the mind’s ability to successfully access, comprehend, and follow God’s Order through practices that purify and cognitively enhance the mind’s attention. I argue that the mind’s perfection figures centrally in Malebranche’s philosophy and is the main hub that connects and reconciles the three fundamental principles of his system, namely, his occasionalism, divine illumination, and freedom. To demonstrate this, I first present, in chapter one, Malebranche’s philosophy within the historical and intellectual context of his membership in the French Oratory, arguing that the Oratory’s particular brand of Augustinianism, initiated by Cardinal Bérulle and propagated by Oratorians such as Andre Martin, is at the core of his philosophy and informs his theory of perfection. Next, in chapter two, I explicate Augustine’s own theory of perfection in order to provide an outline, and a basis of comparison, for Malebranche’s own theory of perfection. -

THE INTELLECTUAL LEGACY OF THE PADRES PAÚLES AND THE RARE BOOKS COLLECTION OF SEMINARIO MAYOR DE SAN CARLOS Aloysius Lopez Cartagenas “If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson The Vincentian Fathers have been at the forefront of the formation of the Filipino clergy since the time of the Spanish occupation. They have been the administrators and formators of seminaries in different areas in the country at some point or other; in particular, the San Carlos Major Seminary in Cebu, which has been recently turned over to the diocesan clergy. The article illustrates the kind of academic, philosophical and theological training that the Vincentian Fathers have provided for the formation of the clergy in Cebu through the books and materials they have left behind, after they turned over the administration. Through this collection of books and references, some dating hundreds of years ago but are still significantly valuable, the seminary, as the paper suggests, has an indispensable tool in its hand to continue the legacy that the Vincentian Fathers have started, as far as the formation of a well-equipped, edified clergy is concerned. O n 21 March 1998, during the closing ceremonies of the school year presided over by the Archbishop of Cebu, Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, the Congregation of the Mission, represented by Fr. Manuel Ginete, formally turned over the administration of Seminario Mayor de San Carlos (Cebu City, Philippines) back to the Diocesan Clergy of Cebu.
