STARS OF THE QUEEN CITY: The Reds Hall of Fame’s new Stars of the Queen City exhibit opens in March...the new exhibit celebrates the 100 different players who have represented the Reds as All-Stars, dating to the first All-Star Game in 1933, and explores the 4 All-Star Games previously played in Cincinnati...each of the 100 Reds All-Stars is represented in the exhibit with a period artifact associated with his Reds career...the exhibit also features a display dedicated to the 8 position players who have represented the Reds the most number of times in All-Star history. TONY PEREZ EXHIBIT & STATUE: In March the Reds Hall of Fame will begin a celebration of the career of Tony Perez, a legendary member of the Big Red Machine teams of the 1970s and one of the most popular players in the history of the franchise...the exhibit features dozens of game-used items and rare collectibles that document the long and storied career of one of the greatest clutch hitters in the history of the game...the celebration of Perez’ career culminates the weekend of 8/21-8/22, when his statue will be dedicated at Great American Ball Park. BREAKING BARRIERS: Major League Baseball, in partnership with Scholastic, is accepting submissions for the Breaking Barriers: In Sports, In Life essay contest held each year during Black History Month to honor the breaking of baseball’s color barrier by Jackie Robinson in 1947...through 3/13, students in grades 4-9 are encouraged to write about how they used Robinson’s values to face their own barriers...grand prize winners will receive a trip to the 2015 All-Star Game at Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park...applications and contest rules can be found at www.MLB.com/BreakingBarriers. *** RED HOTS *** DRY HEAT: Spring Training 2015 is the sixth for the Reds in their player development complex in Goodyear, Arizona...the facility on South Wood Boulevard includes a 44,000-square foot clubhouse, 6 full practice fields, 2 half fields and an agility field...spring training games are played at nearby Goodyear Ballpark, a 10,300-seat facility the club shares with the Indians...there are 15 Major League Baseball clubs training in the Phoenix Area and 15 training in Florida...in 2010 the Reds made the move here from Sarasota, Florida, where they trained for 12 springs from 1998-2009...the agreement with Goodyear includes a 20-year lease and two 5-year team options.
