She then toured 262 INSTRUMENTAL 78 rpm Discs internationally, her name changed to Samaroff, a distant Russian relative, at the suggestion of her manager. After damage to her left arm, Samaroff’s career was seriously curtailed. She then became a music critic for the NY Post. Schmidt was with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (1920-25) and also was solo clarinetist of the Sousa (1925-27) and Conway Bands. The record below was apparently made partially to demonstrate the Bettany Silver Clarinet (“Silva-Bet”), introduced in 1925. States the Music Trade Review: “The name ‘Silva-Bet’ was coined from the longer name, Bettoney silver clarinet. A big campaign has been placed behind this instrument and the results are already showing themselves in the form of steadily increasing sales in all parts of the country. A big impetus to ‘Silva-Bet’ clarinet sales has been the Columbia record made with the instrument by Roy O. Schmidt, famous clarinetist of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra and solo clarinetist with the Sousa and Conway Bands. The record is the fantasy from ‘Rigoletto’, and dealers who carry Columbia records are using it as an ideal demonstration record for the ‘Silva-Bet’ clarinet.” 1944. 10” Blk.
