Calvert is Chair and Professor of the Department of Psychology at Georgetown University and the Director of the Children’s Digital Media Cen- ter (http://cdmc.georgetown.edu), a multi-site interdisciplinary research center funded by the National Science Foundation (2001–11; BCS-0126014 and BCS- 0623871) and the Stuart Family Foundation. Dr Calvert authored Children’s Journeys through the Information Age (1999), and co-edited Children in the Digital Age: Influences of Electronic Media on Development (2002). She has served on two committees for the National Academies, leading to two committee co-authored books: Food Marketing to Children and Youth: Threat or Opportunity (2006) and Youth, Pornography, and the Internet (2002). Dr Calvert, who received her doc- torate in Developmental and Child Psychology from the University of Kansas, is a fellow of the American Psychological Association. She serves on advisory boards for Cable in the Classroom, PBS Kids Next Generation Media, and the Joan Ganz Cooney Center for Educational Media and Research. She provides technical assistance to Congress in the development of the Children and Media Research Advancement Act (CAMRA). She has also consulted for Nickelodeon Online, Sesame Workplace, Blue’s Clues, and Out of the Blue Enterprises. Barbara J. Wilson is the Paul C. Friedland Professorial Scholar and Head of the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. Her research focuses on the social and psychological effects of the mass media, particularly on youth. She is co-author of Children, Adolescents, and the Media (2002; second edition, in press) and three book volumes of the National Television Violence Study (1997–8). In addition, she has published more than 60 scholarly articles and chapters on media effects and their implications for media policy. Recent projects focus on preschoolers’ attachment to media char- acters, parents’ and children’s fright reactions to kidnapping stories in the news, and children’s attraction to media violence. She was editor of the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, and is past President of the Association for Communication Administration, and the Eastern Communication Association. Her work focuses on children and media. She is the author of numerous book chapters and journal articles, and the co-editor of four books. One of the nation's largest private foundations devoted to health, the Foundation is a leading independent voice and source of research and information on health care in the United States. Since 1987, the Foundation has also operated a major program supporting efforts to develop a more equitable health system in South Africa. In 1991, Dr. Altman directed a complete overhaul of the Foundation’s mission and operating style, leading to the Foundation’s standing today as a leader in health policy and communications. Dr. Altman is a former Commissioner of the Department of Human Services for the state of New Jersey under Governor Tom Kean (1986-1989). Prior to joining the Foundation in 1990, Dr. Altman was director of the Health and Human Services program at the Pew Charitable Trusts. He was a vice president of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation from 1981 to 1986, and served in a senior position in the Health Care Financing Administration in the Carter administration.     International Journal of Communication 6 (2012), 2378–2396 1932–8036/20120005 International Communication Association Fellows: A Collective Biography MICHAEL MEYEN University of Munich This article aims to reveal the structure of the academic field of communication by portraying the people at its dominant pole. The study is based on the sociology of Bourdieu and 57 personal interviews with International Communication Association (ICA) fellows. It shows that the communication field’s legitimization problem is intensified by social climbers’ prevalence at the field’s power pole. These first-generation college graduates were raised to value education, hard work, and a certain type of public conduct. They entered the field when they realized that it matched their habitus, as communication attracted people with both an affinity for natural sciences and the wish to make a difference. Quantitative methods and psychological approaches promised scientific authority as well as knowledge for the outside world. The idea of this article is pretty simple: to reveal the structure of the communication field by portraying the people at its dominant pole. Anyone wishing to link the article’s scope and title will probably ask for the empirical and theoretical background: Why ICA, and why the fellows? Why a portrait including the origin environment, for example, instead of canonic texts?
