WSO Media Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sarah Slean and Mike Janzen Reimagine Broadway with the WSO Nov 7-9 Winnipeg, MB - October 29, 2014 – Manitoba-born jazz composer Mike Janzen (called “a rare and infectious gift” by JUNO-winner Steve Bell) and Canadian chanteuse Sarah Slean (described as “a Canadian national treasure” by Exclaim.ca) have teamed up with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) to give the world premiere of a new show titled Reimagining Broadway in the WSO Air Canada Pops Series, November 7-9 at Centennial Concert Hall. The show features Mike Janzen on piano and joining Sarah Slean in vocals. Slean is no stranger to the Canadian music scene. With 3 JUNO nominations and endless accolades as “one of the most compelling acts Canada has to offer” (TIME magazine / Canada), Sarah has left audiences spellbound with her captivating, sultry voice and beautifully arresting presence on stage. Mike Janzen and his trio, one of Canada’s most entertaining jazz outfits, will add their hypnotic grooves and surging imagination to the show. Janzen and Slean selected popular songs from Broadway’s biggest shows, including Mary Poppins, Annie and Les Misérables, to create a program stamped with Janzen’s signature upbeat jazz style. His eclectic mix of orchestral arrangements includes African folk, swing tunes and some more classically developed styles. As for working with the WSO, Janzen said “The WSO has given me so many opportunities to arrange for orchestra and to learn and to grow. I love working with them. They have a great adventurous spirit and a nice big sound.” The project first came about when Janzen began thinking about what songs he wanted to play for his children, which lead to his first re-imagined Broadway song Chim Chim Cheree from Mary Poppins. This song landed on Janzen’s 2010 CD Try to Remember, which was played on CBC and lead to multiple collaborations with the WSO. Janzen was then given the opportunity from JUNO-winner Steve Bell, whom he has worked with on many occasions, to debut his version of Chim Chim Cheree at Massey Hall with the Toronto Symphony. After the success of this concert, Janzen decided he would love to do it as a whole show! Janzen’s goal was to arrange music that would offer a fresh experience for fans of Broadway music. He hopes that these exciting new versions will allow the audience to see themselves in the stories and resonate with the music. Janzen plans to take the show around Canada after the Winnipeg premiere. “It’s strong and it’s a lot of fun. The WSO has been a vital component of the community since its incorporation on February 13, 1947. The debut concert was held on December 16, 1948 in the Civic Auditorium to an audience of 3,000 with Walter Kaufmann conducting. Subscription prices for the first season of five concerts ranged from $3 to $8 with single tickets starting at $0.75. Walter Kaufmann was the orchestra’s first music director and following him came Victor Feldbrill, George Cleve, Piero Gamba, Kazuhiro Koizumi, Bramwell Tovey, Andrey Boreyko, and since 2005, Alexander Mickelthwate. Under their guidance, the orchestra has both earned a place among the ranks of major Canadian symphony orchestras and has come to be regarded as among Canada’s most innovative. Some of the eminent soloists who have appeared with the WSO include conductors Pierre Monteux, John Barbirolli and Arthur Fiedler; violinists David Oistrakh and Itzhak Perlman; pianists Glenn Gould, Byron Janis, Gary Graffman, Leon Fleisher; singers Marilyn Horne and Maureen Forrester; cellists Zara Nelsova and Jacqueline du Pré and many others. The WSO has toured throughout Canada, and made a first appearance at Carnegie Hall in 1979. The orchestra has worked very closely with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation since 1954 when the CBC began broadcasting portions of WSO concerts. The orchestra has released numerous recordings on the CBC label and has given thousands of national radio broadcasts since its inception. In addition to its own extensive season of concerts and educational activities, the WSO functions as the official orchestra of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Manitoba Opera Association. The WSO has developed an international reputation for its annual New Music Festival. Founded in January 1992 by Music Director Bramwell Tovey and the WSO’s first composer-in-residence, Glenn Buhr, the New Music Festival has provided an environment rich in exploration and discovery of new works by composers from Canada and around the world. It was in the New Music Festival that programming proposed for the Spring for Music Festival was first programmed and performed for the loyal New Music Festival audiences in Winnipeg. This appearance at Carnegie Hall on May 8, 2014 was a success for the WSO artistically, financially and on a community level. Hundreds of Manitobans travelled to New York to attend the concert and the celebratory after party at The Russian Tea Room that was attended by 720 people. Sarah Slean, vocals Described as “one of the most compelling acts Canada has to offer,” (TIME Magazine) and nominated three times for her country’s top music prize (the JUNO Awards), multi-faceted Canadian singer/songwriter/pianist Sarah Slean seems to be hitting her stride. With her latest release, the ambitious double album Land & Sea, Sarah has created what The Montreal Gazette calls “a masterpiece.” Over her 14 year career, with nine recordings released in over ten countries worldwide, Sarah’s music has borrowed aspects of cabaret, rock, pop, and orchestral: all knit together by the startling poetry of her lyrics, virtuosic piano-playing, and that voice: “a 19th century Kate Bush” (Mersereau - CBC). In addition to headlining theatres across Canada, Sarah has also toured France, Germany, the US and Sweden and opened internationally for such artists as Ron Sexmsith, Feist, Alanis Morissette, Buck 65, Sarah Harmer, Andrew Bird, Chris Isaac, and Bryan Ferry. Mike Janzen, vocals, piano and arranger With forays into jazz, classical and pop music, Mike Janzen has established himself as a unique talent in Canada. His piano playing has been called, “a rare and infectious gift” (Steve Bell) and his jazz trio has been a regular feature on CBC radio and at festivals across the country. In 2012, Mike made his Massey Hall debut with the Toronto Symphony and his latest album, Try to Remember, received a glowing review from Christopher Loudon (The Jazz Times). His orchestral works have been performed across North America and his latest piece, How Can I keep from singing?, was debuted by the WSO and MFC in 2012. Last year, Mike released a solo piano record entitled Carols and is currently working on a new jazz project called Nudging Forever. .

  • Silly Symphony Casablanca with Live Orchestra
SEPTEMBER – NOVEMBER 2018 I ISSUE 1 WELCOMING MAESTRO DANIEL RAISKIN MAHLER’S TITAN DISNEY: SILLY SYMPHONY CASABLANCA WITH LIVE ORCHESTRA Photographer: Marco Borggreve wso.ca I 204-949-3999 MESSAGE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR Welcome to a new and exciting season of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra! “From the heart, may it go further, to the heart!” is the famous inscription on the score of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. I chose this motto since everyone of us at WSO – musicians, board and staff alike – are passionate about the music we’d like to reach your hearts. As the WSO’s new Music Director, I feel privileged and blessed presenting my first season built on a 70-year legacy of an institution so strongly embedded in the community, so respected and loved in Winnipeg. Like many of us, The Beatles played a significant role in my life as a teenager in the Soviet Union, where the group was actually banned for years. I am particularly excited about Classical Mystery Tour – A Tribute to The Beatles, a show that presents some 30 Beatles tunes sung, played, and performed exactly as they were written. The Beatles recorded with a 41-piece orchestra, so this is going to sound bigger than any recording you’ve ever heard! For kids and parents alike – no one will leave without a smile after having fun at our Disney in Concert: A Silly Symphony Celebration. Groundbreaking cartoons by Walt Disney Studios accompanied by their original scores, performed live by full orchestra – it will be a real treat. Continuing our commitment to presenting the finest scores of film music, we move on to Casablanca with Live Orchestra.

Lamon is founding music director of Toronto’s world-renowned period instrument orchestra, Tafelmusik, which Gramophone said is “one of the world’s top baroque orchestras.” Lamon has been praised by critics in Europe and North America for her strong musical leadership, has won numerous awards and was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2000 and in 2014 was appointed to the Order of Ontario. “She is warm without being sentimental, a powerful leader happy to stand a little in the shadows, a fiercely uncompromising musician with a ready smile on her face” (the Globe and Mail). • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Celebrates
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Celebrates the Music of the Nordic Countries with Week-long Festival Winnipeg, MB - October 21, 2014 - Between October 24 and November 1, 2014, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) and partners the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir, University of Manitoba Orchestra, Winnipeg Chamber Music Society and Cinematheque celebrate the music and culture of the Nordic countries. The festival opens and closes with two WSO MasterworKs concerts featuring the music of Sibelius, Nielsen, and Grieg as well as former Sigur Rós member Kjartan Sveinsson and Manitoban Kenley Kristofferson. In between are a series of concerts exploring the orchestral, choral and chamber music of the Scandinavian countries including excerpts of Grieg’s Pier Gynt with Tracy Dahl and a special presentation of The Hunt, starring Mads MiKKelsen at Cinematheque on Thursday, October 30th. Festival Inspiration Each year, the WSO dives into the music of a specific composer, theme or region. In 2014, the WSO was inspired by the strong connection between the Scandinavian countries and Canada and Manitoba to create the Nordic Festival. The Canadian environment shares many qualities with the Nordic Environment – physical, spiritual, and cultural – but as a relatively young country does not have the same history of composers as the Nordic countries do. The Nordic Festival highlights both the iconic Scandinavian composers – Sibelius (Finland), Grieg (Norway), Carl Nielsen (DenmarK), composers who have been recognized internationally for over a century – as well as modern voices such as Kjartan Sveinsonn and Icelandic-Manitoban Kenley Kristofersson. The festival coincides with the 125th anniversary of the Icelandic Festival and Icelanders play a prominent role.

  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Aziz Shokhakimov & Julie Albers Open
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Aziz Shokhakimov & Julie Albers Open WSO Series Masterworks B with Brahms & Elgar Winnipeg, MB – October 2, 2014 – The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) opens its Masterworks B Series on October 10 & 11 with two sparkling young guests: conductor Aziz Shokhakimov and cellist Julie Albers. The orchestra was so impressed with Shokhakimov’s WSO debut last year that they immediately booked him for a return engagement. Albers, whose lyrical and polished cello tone will shine in the Elgar Cello Concerto, joins the orchestra for her WSO debut. The concert opens with the late Winnipeg virtuoso Sophie-Carmen Eckhardt-Grammaté's Cappriccio - Concertante, which shows off the colours of the orchestra with opposing instrumental groups. Aziz will then take the audience through Elgar's Cello Concerto and close with Brahms' 4th Symphony. A dark and contemplative work, Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor is one of two great masterworks for the instrument. It shows off the cello’s deep and resonant tone with long, sweeping lyrical passages. Fans of the Game of Thrones TV series will recognize this beautiful sound from the infamous Red Wedding theme, which echoes a number of passages from the Elgar Concerto. The concert closes with Austrian composer Johannes Brahms' grand 4th Symphony, a cornerstone of the orchestral tradition. Written at the end of his life, Brahms was brought to tears by the audience response to its premiere in 1897. Mortally ill with liver cancer, Brahms realized it would likely be his swan song. Yet the music is just as fresh and powerful today as it was over 100 years ago.

  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WSO Opens New Season with Dvořák's
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WSO opens new season with Dvořák’s New World Winnipeg, MB – September 15, 2014 - Fresh from New York City’s Carnegie Hall, Music Director Alexander Mickelthwate and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) launch their 2014-2015 season on September 26 & 27 with a concert inspired by the human ideal of freedom. Featuring Dvořák’s inimitable Symphony No. 9 “From the New World,” Gershwin’s swinging Piano Concerto in F with Natasha Paremski in her second performance at the WSO, and Copland’s stirring Canticle of Freedom with the University of Manitoba Singers, this is a concert not to be missed. “We explore the importance of freedom and the heartbeat of humankind as we begin our new season,” says Music Director Alexander Mickelthwate. “I look forward to sharing these experiences with our musicians and our audience as we begin our season.” Audience favourite Dvořák’s New World Symphony is a powerful and spiritual work written to celebrate the fourth centennial of Columbus’s so-called discovery of America with rich, memorable melodies influenced by the Deep South and Native American folk music. 26-year-old pianist Natasha Paremski returns to WSO to perform Gershwin’s Piano Concerto, which premiered in New York in 1925. With consistently striking and dynamic performances, Paremski showcases an artistic maturity far beyond her years. This work brilliantly explores the tang of jazz found in musical America. The composer himself said the quick pace of the first movement represents “the young, enthusiastic spirit of American life.” “I find Gershwin to be a composer whose genius lies in his unique idiomatic style, a style which cannot be mistaken for any other composer,” says Paremski.
