  • Handout 2 - Introducing Selena
Handout 2 - Introducing Selena Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was born in Lake Jackson, Texas on April 16, 1971. She began performing at a young age in her family’s restaurant with her older brother and sister. Despite being unable to speak the language fluently, Selena sung in Spanish by learning the songs phonetically. The family group soon became called Selena y Los Dinos, and after a move to Corpus Christi, they started regularly performing at weddings, school events, quinceaneras, and fairs. Soon, they were signed to a local record company and between 1986 and 1988, they released five albums. As the lead singer, Selena became a main figure in Tejano music, which was traditionally a male dominated genre. After winning Female Entertainer of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards, she began releasing music simply as Selena. Her self-titled album was released in 1989, and peak- ed on the Billboard Mexican Regional charts at #7. Her subsequent albums were equally suc- cessful: the second album Ven Conmigo was the first Tejano album by a woman to go gold with 500,000 sales, her third album Entre a Mi Mundo produced her signature song “Como La Flor” and her fourth album Amor Prohibido charted on Billboard 200 charts. In 1993, she released Live! which earned a Grammy for Best Mexican/American Album. Outside of music, Selena served as a spokesperson for Coca Cola from 1987 and into the 90s, and ventured into fashion by establishing her clothing line and fashion boutique, Selena Etc. which featured locations in Texas, and engaged in philanthropy work.

  • Selena Gomez - Lose You to Love Me Episode 193
Song Exploder Selena Gomez - Lose You to Love Me Episode 193 Hrishikesh: You’re listening to Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and piece by piece tell the story of how they were made. My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. (“Lose You to Love Me” BY SELENA GOMEZ) Hrishikesh: Selena Gomez is a singer, songwriter, and actress, who’s spent most of her life in the public eye. She started her acting career as a child, and put out her first albums as a teenager. She’s had 3 number one albums, eight Top 10 hits, and in 2017, Billboard named her Woman of the Year. At one point, she was the most followed person on Instagram, and the details of her life are constantly discussed in tabloid headlines. So, when your private life is that public, how do you write a song about something as personal as heartbreak? Selena: Do I think my story intrigues people in a different way? Obviously it does. It’s unfortunately how it works. But this song alone represents what a lot of people who are heartbroken have gone through. Hrishikesh: For the song “Lose You to Love Me,” Selena teamed up with the Grammy-winning production duo Mattman & Robin, whom she’d worked with before. And she turned to her longtime songwriting collaborators, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter. Julia Michaels is a Grammy-nominated artist in her own right, and Justin Tranter is also a Grammy-nominee who was named BMI’s Pop Songwriter of the Year. Selena, Julia, and Justin have written 10 songs together, including “Lose You to Love Me.” The song came out in October 2019, and went on to become Selena’s first #1 hit.

  • Selena Murder
Fans Make Selena Pilgrimage Mourners Flock to Coffin, Motel, Studio and Home By PATTY REINERT Copyright 1995 Houston Chronicle CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Thousands of emotional mourners said goodbye to their Tejano queen on Sunday, winding their way along the city’s picturesque bay into the convention center where the body of Selena Quintanilla Perez lay in a closed black coffin surrounded by white roses. In a procession reminiscent of a Good Friday pageant, hundreds of mourners continued their pilgrimage, retracing the final steps of the singer who would have turned 24 on Easter Sunday. Adding to burgeoning shrines at ever stop, they paused outside her home, her recording studio and finally Room 158 of the Days Inn motel where she was shot. Some mourners swore they could see the imprint of Selena in the freshly cleaned carpet of the motel lobby, where the young singer fell, bleeding. Many people who paid their respects spoke of angels and saints who would watch over Selena in heaven. Although Selena and her family are Jehovah’s Witnesses, many of her throng of Hispanic fans are Catholic. The door to the motel room where Selena was shot Friday had become a shrine with flowers, letters and candles bearing photos of the Virgin of San Juan. Admirers who traveled from across Texas and northern Mexico used red and pink lipstick to write messages to the slain artist on the windows of the room. A fence surrounding Selena’s home had been covered the previous day with flowers, signs and sympathy cards, and religious candles had been placed in the family’s driveway.
