Art Museums of Skagen PRESS KIT 2017 PRESS KIT 2017 Skagen in Scandinavian art From the end of the 1870s and up till the turn of the century, Skagen was an inter- national venue for young artists. In common for them was that they – inspired by naturalism and plein air painting – sought for new places and motifs, and during the 1880s, Skagen turned into an artists’ colony, where there was room for both work and play. The artists’ preferred motifs included the fishermen’s work at the beach, the fishermen’s homes, the nature surrounding Skagen, and the social life among the artists. Already at that time, the Skagen painters reached high appraisal and partici- pated in large exhibitions abroad. The best-known Skagen painters are the Danish painters, Michael and Anna Anch- er and P. S. Krøyer. But artists like Holger Drachmann, who both wrote and painted, Viggo Johansen, Carl Locher, Laurits Tuxen and the Nordic artists, Christian Krohg and Oscar Björck, also contributed to putting Skagen on the map. Skagens Museum was founded in 1908, and the aim was to gather the works of the Skagen painters and to raise funds for the construction of a museum. Since 1928, the museum has been located in a building designed by architect, Ulrik Plesner. In the beautiful museum garden, you will find the Garden House, where many of the artists have been tenants, and the old grain warehouse, where Krøyer had his first studio in Skagen. The Skagens Museum was extended in 1982 and 1989, and from 2014 – 2016, the museum has been thoroughly renovated and extended, almost doubling the ex- hibition area. In 2015 the museum merged with the two artists’ homes, Anchers Hus and Drachmann’s Hus, and the collection now consists of no less than 9000 paint- ings, drawings, graphic works, sculptures and ceramics – mainly from the period 1870 – 1930. Today, the beautiful artists’ home creates the frames for an exciting museum that bears witness to the everyday life and the art as it was in the Ancher family. Both the house as well furnishing, paintings and other inventory appear as it did, when the family lived in the house. Michael Ancher died in 1927, and Anna Ancher died eight years later. After that time, Helga didn’t live in the house any longer, and when she died in 1964, both the building and the collection was carefully restored and opened for the public. Saxilds Gaard lies right next to Anchers Hus, and here you can experience changing exhibitions – mainly with works created by Michael, Anna and Hel- ga Ancher. In Saxilds Gaard you will also find a small museum shop as well as a charming café, Anchers café, where you can buy a cup of coffee and lovely cakes to enjoy in the surrounding garden. Drachmanns Hus Holger Drachmann was in his own time known and loved as the great Danish poet, who was highly regarded abroad as well. He was, however, educated marine pain- ter and throughout his entire life, he mastered both talents with great passion. In his posterity, he has become known as a widely travelled and colourful character, and a ladies’ man without compare. Drachmann initiated many relationships, of which three ended in marriage – first with Vilhelmine, then with Emmy and finally with Soffi. Unfortunately, he suffered from a bad health and died 61 years old in 1908, where after he was buried in the sand dunes at Grenen. The beautiful half-timbered house from 1828 created the frames for the final years of Drach- mann’s life – from 1902 to 1908. After his death, the house opened as a museum in 1911, and appears largely today as it did, when Drachmann lived there with his third wife, Soffi. This extraordinary permission was granted as he worked on two larger paintings entitled Together we get somewhere. The two pieces were inspired by the Swedish Skagen painter Oscar Björck’s painting Launching the boat. Skagen from 1884. The purposeful collaboration between the four fishermen who are launching the boat in Björck’s painting is in Rantzau’s painting transformed into a hopeless Sisyphean task – the boat will not move. Though Rantzau’s paintings are inspired by Launching the boat. Skagen, the works have not been presented together before now. The paintings are presented together with 60 of Rantzau’s sket- ches. Locher worked on the series for more than 25 years. The series of statues portrays the biggest talents of the Danish stage in costume. The exhibition is the largest presentation of Axel Locher’s works. Besides works from the collection of Art Museums of Skagen the exhibition contains works from The Theatre Museum at The Court Theatre in Copenhagen, Den gamle By in Aarhus, CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark in Middelfart, the Royal Family and private collections. In Michael Ancher’s life size portraits of his wife, the artist Anna Ancher, he created a monument to her. In his other portraits of women, Michael Ancher explores other themes as well as a lighter palette, than we usually see in his work. • Engaging Young Adults to Read About Artworks
IT UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN BACHELOR THESIS Engaging Young Adults to Read about Artworks Rethinking Interpretive Text through User-centered Design AUTHOR: LINDA ROGBERG SUPERVISOR: ANDERS SUNDNES LØVLIE MAY 2018 ABSTRACT Smartphones are becoming increasingly integrated in the museum experience, which paves the way for designers to experiment with alternative mediation processes. This paper presents a case study of the image recognition app Vizgu. The project is driven by a Research through Design approach, presenting a format for interpretive text of artworks in a locative media app. The format is based on a twofold design challenge. One, to design a story-editor tool that assists backend users to re-write interpretive texts. Two, to offer a redesign that supports the experience. Through a user-centered design approach, the format was tested and evaluated in three iterations with potential users. In the finale evaluation it was found that the story-editor tool could be used by inexperienced writers to re-write stories. Additionally, the re-written stories were evaluated in a prototype with users. It was evident that text must be presented in a manageable way with reduced amount of text, and that the stories must be written with a concrete language style using deictic writing to enhance the storytelling experience. To conclude, the results indicate that the format engages young adults to read about artworks. Yet, further research is necessary in order to make sufficient conclusions. 1 out of 72 TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. • 2017-08-19 Copenhagen Liberty
Copenhagen Liberty Sunday, August 20 We had a couple hours between flights and went to Huxley's for an English Breakfast. We both had opened the box breakfast British Airways offered about an hour and a half before landing... and we closed the boxes back up. Then we cleared the checkpoint for through passengers and had time to catch up before our connecting flight to Copenhagen. Liz had salmon eggs Benedict and I had eggs, English bacon and a banger, grilled tomato, and baked beans. The banger was less than tasty and my stomach began acting up, either from the curried chicken the night before or the banger this morning. I was uncomfortably cramped. We walked through the terminal to catch the transfer train to our gate. They had a standing, woman shaped screen which almost seemed like a hologram and, depending which language had been selected, spoke to passersby to tell them how to use the train. It was quite clever and very realistic. We followed her guidance and made our way to Gate 62 in A Terminal. The two hour flight passed quickly and we were immediately met at luggage claim by our guide to the hotel. There were six people in our ride but later that day we would be joined by another 19 people on the On Line Vacation extension. When we arrived at the Trivoli Hotel and Convention Center we were 121 surprised to see Olivier, our London hotel guide from last year. He would coordinate our booking and then go on to Stockholm later in the week.

  • The Holistic Portrait Peter Michael Hornung, Editor
88 THE HOLISTIC PORTRAIT By Peter Michael Hornung, Editor and Art Critic at “Politiken” Like other artists in our chaotically picture rich modern age, the painter Ralph Heimans also owes a professional debt to the art that preceded his own work his- torically. However, though he may have turned to it, asked it questions and drawn inspiration from it, he has never copied it. On the other hand, though, his personal standpoint as an artist is a result of the inspiration he drew from it. No one can create anything lasting and valuable without swearing some sort of oath to history, and any artist, even the most rebellious and experimental (or the opposite), must inscribe his or her work in a development, in which he or she serves as a link between past and future: between what went before and maybe influenced them, and what will come after and perhaps be coloured by them. This applies particularly to any artist who has chosen portrait painting as his or her sphere. In this field, the models extend far back in history. The need to be portrayed has existed for as long as there has been people with power and influ- ence: people who wished to be notably present, not only in their age, but also for posterity. Portraits are like memories. With the right degree of likeness they pos- sess the special capacity to make absent people present. Consideration for this likeness is also the reason why people still allow themselves to be painted, model- led, photographed, sketched etc. Heimans’ success as an artist in this historic genre lies not only in the fact that his paintings present a ‘likeness’, as it is referred to in the profession: in other words, that there is a clear and visible correspondence between the character appearing in the painting and the person who was the reason for that painting, and whom the painting must either remind us of or introduce us to.

To understand it I will examine three influential Norwegian reporters with origins in the nineteenth century: A. O. Vinje (1818-1870), Christian Krohg (1852-1925), and Knut Hamsun (1859-1952).1 I have chosen them because they were innovative in their time and worked as reporters for decades. They have “survived”; they are still pres- ent in discussions of journalism in Norway, written about in textbooks and biographies, and admired as models. Indeed, we can consider them to be the founders of the modern Norwegian tradition of literary reportage, a term I use in deference to Norwegian and indeed Continental usage, as opposed to the American usage of literary journalism. Vinje, Krohg, and Hamsun were not only journalists, however.
