Melissa, Thanks for taking the time yesterday afternoon to discuss our shared goal of ensuring the House is a safe and respectful work environment for members, staff, lobbyists, and the public. Below is a summary of our conversation with Kelly Knight, Director of Human Resources and Ben Weeks, House Employment Counsel: 1. The House will proceed with the previously-agreed-to plans for discrimination and harassment training that includes implicit bias training per Rep. Hortman's request. The House Human Resources Department will work with our staff to select a firm or firms that can handle the full-day training. The training will take place in the first days of the 2018 session. The training will be mandatory for all members and there will be consequences for failure to participate. 2. Per the recommendation of the non-partisan Human Resources Department, Speaker Daudt approved Friday, with agreement from Rep. Hortman, the hiring of an outside firm to conduct an independent investigation into allegations made against Rep. Tony Cornish. 3. House non-partisan staff will make suggestions for processes that could be followed for review and improvement of current House policies on harassment and discrimination as well of the possible adoption of additional policies, including policies aimed at protecting lobbyists from harassment and discrimination. 4. No other concerns were raised during the call that have not been addressed, and there was agreement to continue meeting as needed to address the above issues.
