Midnight Special Songlist
west coast music Midnight Special Please find attached the Midnight Special song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has. -

Sistahs African American Vernacular English Translation of Les Belles-Soeurs A Foreignization Approach Jon Eric Dietz A Thesis in The Department of Translation Studies Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts at Concordia University Montreal, Quebec, Canada Summer 2011 © Jon Eric Dietz, 2011 CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY School of Graduate Studies This is to certify that the thesis prepared By: Jon Eric Dietz Entitled: Sistahs, African American Vernacular English Translation of Les Belles-Soeurs, A Foreignization Approach. Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) complies with the regulations of the University and meets the accepted standards with respect to originality and quality. Signed by the final examining committee: Dr. Sherry Simon Chair Dr. Nicola Nixon Examiner Dr. Deborah Folaron Examiner Dr. Paul Bandia Supervisor Approved by Dr. Sherry Simon Chair of Department or Graduate Program Director Graham Carr Dean of Faculty Date December 19, 2011 ii Abstract Sistahs African American Vernacular English Translation of Les Belles-Soeurs A Foreignization Approach Jon Eric Dietz In this thesis, in addition to translating the entire play into African American English, I review the history of Black English, its use in American Literature and its translation into French. I discuss the foreignization and domestication approaches used in the translation as defined by Schleiermacher and Venuti. I also compare Tremblay’s original play with Burek and Glassco’s Standard English translation and my AAVE translation by using Antoine Berman’s deforming tendencies as a theoretical and analytical framework to demonstrate how my translation avoids many of the deforming tendencies found in the Standard English translation. -

Rap the Language
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by PublicacionesDidácticas (E-Journal) Rap the Language Título: Rap the Language. Target: Profesores de Inglés. Asignatura: Lengua/Gramática Inglesa. Autores: Aina March Escoto, Licenciada en Filología Inglesa y Miquel Bennasar Torrens, Licenciado en Filologia Inglesa. ap music has become one of the favorites of the American public because it is not only a particular genre but it also represents the lives and the sociopolitical points of view of a certain social group. Rap music R has recently expanded its sphere of influence outside of the United States but it is still undervalued because of the content of the songs and the language it uses. This article focuses on the use of English in rap music as a case of American slang and as a representative of the Hip Hop Nation Language. The origins and the status of rap will be analyzed through two different rap songs: “Stan” by the white, world-famous Eminem; and “In Da Club” by the African American rapper 50 Cent. The features of slang that are linguistically relevant and the phonological, lexical and grammatical characteristics of the two songs will be highlighted in order to draw conclusions and establish the main characteristics of the language used in rap. If we consider that rap music is related to the African American Language, we can already advance that rap music presents characteristics of this variety. Probably, this will be seen in the song by 50 Cent. But does Eminem use the same kind of language? Does he use a genuine and authentic Hip Hop Nation Language, or does he present some differences in his speech? Probably Eminem uses a variety close to the language used by 50 Cent, although they may present some differences because of their social backgrounds and their previous life experiences. -

ON MY GRIND: FREESTYLE RAP PRACTICES IN EXPERIMENTAL CREATIVE WRITING AND COMPOSITION PEDAGOGY Evan Nave 312 Pages My work is always necessarily two-headed. Double-voiced. Call-and-response at once. Paranoid self-talk as dichotomous monologue to move the crowd. Part of this has to do with the deep cuts and scratches in my mind. Recorded and remixed across DNA double helixes. Structurally split. Generationally divided. A style and family history built on breaking down. Evidence of how ill I am. And then there’s the matter of skin. The material concerns of cultural cross-fertilization. Itching to plant seeds where the grass is always greener. Color collaborations and appropriations. Writing white/out with black art ink. Distinctions dangerously hidden behind backbeats or shamelessly displayed front and center for familiar-feeling consumption. -
