In the Tear One Thousand Nine Hundred.

AN ACT To increase the Efficiency of the Militia. Be it enacted by the Senate 2nd House of Representatives General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows: 1 Section 1. Section twenty-six, of chapter 2 three hundred and sixty-seven, of the acts of the 3 year eighteen hundred and ninety-three is hereby 4 amended by adding in the first line, after the 5 word “,” the words “of infantry;” and 6 by striking out all of the first sentence after the 7 words “ one surgeon with the rank of ,” in 8 the third line, and substituting for the words 9 stricken out the following: “one regimental 10 adjutant, one quartermaster, and one assistant 11 surgeon, each with the rank of captain, one pay- 9 EFFICIENCY OF THE MILITIA. 12 master, who shall be the mustering , one IB assistant surgeon, one inspector of rifle practice, 14 one commissary of subsistence, and three battal- 15 ion adjutants, each with the rank of first lieuten- 16 ant, and one chaplain;” and by adding between 17 the words “one” and “sergeant major” in the 18 second sentence of said section, the word “ regi- 19 mental;” after the words “quartermaster ser- 20 geant” the words “one commissary sergeant;” 21 and after the words “ chief bugler ” the words 9.9. “ and three sergeant , who shall 23 hold the same relative rank with reference to 24 other grades as in the United States ;” so 25 that the first two sentences of said section as 26 amended shall read as follows: 27 Section 26. To each regiment of infantry there 28 shall be one , one colonel, three 29 majors, and a to consist of one surgeon with 30 the rank of major; one regimental adjutant, one 31 quartermaster, and one assistant surgeon, each 32 with the rank of captain; one paymaster, who 33 shall be the mustering officer, one assistant sur- 34 geon, one inspector of rifle practice, one commis- 85 sary of subsistance, and three battalion adjutants, 36 each with the rank of first lieutenant; ar.d one 37 chaplain. There shall also be a non-commis- 38 sioned staff as follows: one regimental sergeant 39 major, one quartermaster sergeant, one commissary 40 sergeant, one paymaster sergeant, one hospital 41 steward, one drum major, one chief bugler, aud 42 three battalion sergeant majors, who shall hold 13 the same relative rank, with reference to other 1900.] HOUSE.—No. 345. 44 grades, as in the ; there shall 45 also be allowed to each regiment, two color ser- -46 geants, and one orderly to rank as private, and 47 sixteen drummers to be enlisted and mustered as 48 drummers.

1 Section 2. To each regiment of heavy ar- -2 tillery there shall be one colonel, one lieutenant 3 colonel, three majors, and the staff, non-commis- -4 sioned staff, headquarter attaches, and drummers 5 prescribed for a regiment of infantry, except that 6 in addition to the staff and non-commissioned staff 7 officers specified in section one of this Act, there 8 shall be allowed to each regiment of heavy ar- -9 tillery the additional staff officers provided for 10 in section five of chapter three hundred and forty- -11 eight of the acts of the year eighteen hundred 12 and ninety-eight.
