Astronomers have used them as a definitive source for the distribution of galactic light, while the public got to know them through their inclusion in Zeiss planetaria and the Lund Panorama of the Milky Way.1 More recently, they inspired visual artist Jeronimo Voss in the creation of his exhibition ‘Inverted Night Sky’, which was displayed at the Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam.2 Joseph Ashbrook, editor of Sky and Telescope, even considered Pannekoek to be the ‘greatest of all naked-eye observers of the galaxy’.3 A striking feature of Pannekoek’s Milky Way research was that he used both visual observations and pho- tographic methods to determine the distribution of galactic light, which he then represented using many different techniques, including naturalist An earlier version of this chapter was published as Chaokang Tai, ‘The Milky Way as Optical Phenomenon: Perception and Photography in the Drawings of Anton Pannekoek’, in Anton Pannekoek: Ways of Viewing Science and Society, ed. In this chapter, I focus on how these various representations were made and why they were made in the first place. By studying how and why Pannekoek employed such wide-ranging methods for observing and rep- resenting the visual aspect of the Milky Way, we gain crucial insight into the development of early twentieth-century astronomy. It illustrates the complex relation between naked-eye observations and photography dur- ing this period, reveals how astronomers coped with the characteristics of human psychology and physiology, and deepens our understanding of the connections between political philosophy and scientific epistemology. To explain the co-existence of various representational methods in Pannekoek’s research, we must first examine the role he attributed toas- tronomers in observing the Milky Way; in particular, how he thought cer- tain characteristics and limitations of human physiology and psychology combined to create the image of Milky Way. On this issue, it is informat- ive to draw a parallel with late-nineteenth-century epistemic debates con- cerning the inherent differences between astronomical observers. Follow- ing the realization that well-skilled observers recorded different coordin- ates for the same star even when using the same instruments and diligently abiding by the same methods, astronomers had to reconsider the role of human perception in visual observation and develop strategies to either minimize or stabilize these differences.4 This reflexive inward look of as- tronomers was part of a greater ‘reflexive turn’ in observational science during the mid-nineteenth century, and it caused several astronomers to venture beyond their own field and participate to a cross-disciplinary ex- change of ideas.5 More than half a century later, Pannekoek, too, was deeply concerned with the anatomy of the human eye and the psychology of the human brain when developing his method for visual photometry of 4. He, too, ventured beyond astronomy to develop his ideas. In his case, however, it was not experimental psychology, but Marxism that he turned to. There are clear advantages to actively considering Pannekoek’s Marx- ism when discussing his scientific methodology in representing the Milky Way. It is in his Marxist writings that Pannekoek developed his philo- sophy of the human mind: that humans have an innate ability to ana- lyse and synthesize sense perceptions, but that this ability is implicitly influenced by prior experience. Historians of science Lorraine Daston and Peter Galison have argued that scientific epistemology is inextricably linked to conceptions of the self, as scientists seek to counteract the weak- nesses of the self while emphasizing its strengths.6 Daston, in particular, has emphasized how the interaction between psychological-physiological concerns and scientific epistemology are especially prominent when con- sidering the visual aspect of science.7 In Pannekoek’s Milky Way research, we find that he wanted to emphasize the innate capacity of thehuman mind to analyse sense perceptions while eliminating the effects of im- plicit bias. In doing so, he concurred with contemporary ideas on sci- entific collaboration. The late nineteenth century saw the emergence of large-scale scientific collaborations working on grand transnational pro- jects. For the organizers of these projects, it was vital that participants showed self-restraint and followed predetermined methods. Subjective differences had to be minimized for individual contributions to bemu- tually compatible.8 Although Pannekoek’s Milky Way research was con- ceived on a much smaller scale, he advocated a similar ethos. In his case, he hoped to eliminate individual subjectivity while preserving collective subjectivity. The question of how to observe and represent the Milky Way inevit- ably leads to a discussion on the role of photography in early twentieth- 6.   • E. E. Barnard and His Dark Nebula!
    Visible throughout our galaxy are clouds of interstellar matter, thin but widespread wisps of gas and dust. Some of the stars near nebulae are often very massive and their high-energy radiation can excite the gas of the nebula to shine; such nebula is called emission nebula. If the stars are dimmer or further away, their light is reflected by the dust in the nebula and can be seen as reflection nebula. Some nebulae are only visible by the absorption of the light from objects behind them. These are called dark nebula Edward Emerson Barnard was a professor of astronomy at the University of Chicago Yerkes Observatory. As a pioneer in astrophotography, he cataloged a series of dark nebula of the Milky Way. Through this work of studying the structure of the Milky Way, Barnard discovered that certain dark regions of our galaxy are actually clouds of gas and dust that obscured the more distant stars in the background. Today, we’re going to look-back on his life and accomplishments. We’ll also review several of my observations of his dark nebula. Barnard’s Early Years: A: Childhood, Work, and Stargazing Edward Emerson Barnard was born on December 16th, 1857 in Nashville Tennessee, at the cusp of the Civil War. His mother, Elizabeth, (at the age of 42), had moved the family from Cincinnati to Nashville a few months prior to Edward’s birth, when his father, Reuben Barnard had passed away. The family lived in near poverty, with Elizabeth as the sole provider working several small jobs, the most profitable being that of her making wax flowers, which she had a skill at creating.

Introduction The largest part of astronomical research directly relies on data taken at various kinds of telescopes of variable size - from those having mirrors of 8 or 10 meters in diameter to backyard amateur telescopes. However,serious comlications arise when one attempts to gain information on the internal structure of any kind of celestial bodies. The reason for these complications is simple: the interiors of any kind of objects are unobservable. For example, nobody has ever gone (and nobody ever will) into the center of Jupiter to measure the temperature there. Surfaces of many kinds of objects are observable. However, the ”state” of a surface of any given object is a consequence of at least two factors: processes occuring in the interior of the object but also of any possible external influences. The aim of this lecture is to discuss to some extent one particular ”subfield” within the field of modelling of the internal structure of celestial objects - the internal structure of the asteroids.     'This is not a pipe': Curious dark nebula seen as never before 15 August 2012 were areas in space where there were no stars. But it was later discovered that dark nebulae actually consist of clouds of interstellar dust so thick it can block out the light from the stars beyond. The Pipe Nebula appears silhouetted against the rich star clouds close to the centre of the Milky Way in the constellation of Ophiuchus (The Serpent Bearer). Barnard 59 forms the mouthpiece of the Pipe Nebula and is the subject of this new image from the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope. This strange and complex dark nebula lies about 600-700 light-years away from Earth. The nebula is named after the American astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard who was the first to systematically record dark nebulae using long-exposure photography and one of those who recognised their dusty nature. Barnard catalogued a total of 370 dark nebulae all over the sky. The Islamic scholars have, despite minor detailed differences, universally accepted the definition of a new month in the Hijriyah calendar, a lunar calendar; a new month is set to begin in the evening the new moon is observed after the sun is set. The moon must have passed its conjunction with the Sun preceding the sunset. The verb “to observe” here is interpreted as observation by unaided eye; a tradition that has been propagated since the seventh century, benefitting minimally from the ongoing technological and scientific advancement in the field of astronomy.

Immediately astronomical applications were attempted. First “daguerreotypes” of Moon, Sun, and bright fixed stars were made. The first fifty years of photography are characterized by the search for suitable methods of obtaining the most stable and lifelike image. The first successful attempt to develop and fix a photographic image – on a silver-coated copper plate (daguerreotypye) – was in 1839. In 1840, Josef Petzval (1807–1891), professor of mathematics at Vienna University, developed a portrait objective, a dublet system. Compared to Daguerre’s lens, this “Petzval objective” was 22 times faster, had a larger field of view and had less aberrations. The optician Peter Wilhelm Friedrich Voigtländer (1812–1878) used it in 1841 for the first metallic camera. Also in 1839, another process was announced which allowed prints to be made from paper negatives (calotype). From 1851 a new method gained acceptance in which a glass plate was coated with a light-sensitive layer imme- diately before exposure (collodion wet plate process). This reduced the required exposure time to a few seconds. The new medium quickly became established in many areas of application, including especially portrait pho- tography. But until the invention of the gelatine dry plate process (1871), photography remained a complicated business which could only be carried out by specialists. In the 1880s this “dry plate” allowed much shorter exposure times, hence photography became widely known.

His father, William Joseph Schlesinger (1836-1880), and his mother, Mary Wagner Schlesinger (1832-1892), both natives of the German province of Silesia, had emigrated to the United States. In Silesia they had lived in neighboring vil- lages, but they did not know each other until they met in New York, in 1855, at the home of Mary's cousin. They were mar- ried in 1857 and had seven children, all of whom grew to maturity. Frank was the youngest and, after 1939, the last survivor. His father's death, in 1880, although it brought hardships to the family, was not permitted to interfere with Frank's educa- tion. He attended public school in New York City, and eventually entered the College of the City of New York, receiv- ing the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1890. His aptitude for mathematical science, already evident in grammar school, be- came more marked in the higher stages of his education when he began to show a preference for applied mathematics. Upon completing his undergraduate work it was not possible for him to continue with graduate studies. He had to support himself, and his health at that time made it desirable for him to engage in outdoor activities.
