Hillenbrand1 1Department of Astronomy; MC 249-17; California Institute of Technology; Pasadena, CA 91125, USA; tjd,[email protected] Draft version April 9, 2015 ABSTRACT Age determination is undertaken for nearby early-type (BAF) stars, which constitute attractive targets for high-contrast debris disk and planet imaging surveys. Our analysis sequence consists of: acquisition of uvbyβ photometry from catalogs, correction for the effects of extinction, interpolation of the photometry onto model atmosphere grids from which atmospheric parameters are determined, and finally, comparison to the theoretical isochrones from pre-main sequence through post-main sequence stellar evolution models, accounting for the effects of stellar rotation. We calibrate and validate our methods at the atmospheric parameter stage by comparing our results to fundamentally determined Teff and log g values. We validate and test our methods at the evolutionary model stage by comparing our results on ages to the accepted ages of several benchmark open clusters (IC 2602, α Persei, Pleiades, Hyades). Finally, we apply our methods to estimate stellar ages for 3493 field stars, including several with directly imaged exoplanet candidates. From 2008 to 2014, 580 B stars were observed with multi-epoch, high-resolution (λ/∆λ = 48,000) optical spectroscopy at Universitätssternwarte Bochum near Cerro Armazones in Chile. A total of 4019 spectra have been observed by our own spectrograph BESO supple- mented by 818 spectra downloaded from the ESO pipeline-processed data archive of the three high-resolution spectrographs FEROS, HARPS and UVES. Our survey splits up into two subsets limited to V ≤ 8 mag. The first set, comprising 258 B stars, is volume-limited to a distance of 125 parsec (δ < +25◦), while the additional subset of 322 B stars is randomly selected to provide a similar number of stars in each spectral class bin. Hence, this survey seems to be the most comprehensive attempt of a spectro- scopic B star survey up until today. The first part of this work analyses the spectroscopic binary fraction statistically to determine possible mass-dependencies. In general, the dimension of previously deter- mined SB fractions could be confirmed. As the spectral type B comprises both, high- and intermediate-mass stars, conclusions about the star formation process with regard to stellar multiplicity could be drawn. -

The study of observational astronomy and locating someone who has expertise in this field has become a rare find. The ancient civilizations had a keen interest in their skies and used the heavens as a navigational tool and as a form of entertainment associating mythology and stories about the constellations. Constellations were derived from mankind's attempt to bring order to the chaos of stars above them. They also realized the celestial objects of the night sky were beyond the control of mankind and associated the heavens with religion. Observational astronomy and familiarity with the night sky today is limited for the following reasons: • Many people live in cities and metropolitan areas have become so well illuminated that light pollution has become a real problem in observing the night sky. • Typical city lighting prevents one from seeing stars that are of fourth, fifth, sixth magnitude thus only a couple hundred stars will be seen. • Under dark skies this number may be as high as 2,500 stars and many of these dim stars helped form the patterns of the constellations. • Light pollution is accountable for reducing the appeal of the night sky and loss of interest by many young people as the night sky is seldom seen in its full splendor. • People spend less time outside than in the past, particularly at night. • Our culture has developed such a profusion of electronic devices that we find less time to do other endeavors in the great outdoors. -

Astronomical Journal, March 2005 Determining the Physical Properties of the B Stars II. Calibration of Synthetic Photometry E.L. Fitzpatrick1, D. Massa2 ABSTRACT We present a new calibration of optical (UBV , Str¨omgren uvbyβ, and Geneva) and near IR (Johnson RIJHK and 2MASS) photometry for B and early A stars derived from Kurucz (1991) ATLAS9 model atmospheres. Our sample of stars consists of 45 normal, nearby B and early A stars which have high quality, low resolution IUE spectra and accurate Hipparcos parallaxes. The calibration is unique because it relies only on the UV spectral energy distributions, the absolute flux calibration of the V filter and the Hipparcos distances to determine the appropriate model atmospheres for the program stars. These models are then used to calibrate the synthetic photometry. We compare our results with previous, well accepted results and provide a thorough discussion of the random errors and systematic effects affecting the calibration. In particular, we demonstrate the influence of v sin i on surface gravities derived from fitting model atmospheres. Finally, we discuss some of our intended applications of this new calibration. Initiated in 2008 and completed in 2013, the project was supported by 3 Large Program allocations, as well as various pro- grams initiated by independent PIs and archival resources. Ultimately, over 4800 circularly polarized spectra of 560 O and B stars were collected with the instruments ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Narval at the T´elescope Bernard Lyot, and HARPSpol at the European Southern Observatory La Silla 3.6m telescope, making MiMeS by far the largest systematic investigation of massive star magnetism ever undertaken. -

To study the time evolution of magnetic fields, chemical abundance peculiarities, and other characteristics of magnetic Ap and Bp stars during their main sequence lives, a sample of these stars in open clusters has been obtained, as such stars can be assumed to have the same ages as the clusters to which they belong. However, in exploring age determinations in the literature, we find a large dispersion among different age determinations, even for bright, nearby clusters. Aims. Our aim is to obtain ages that are as accurate as possible for the seven nearby open clusters α Per, Coma Ber, IC 2602, NGC 2232, NGC 2451A, NGC 2516, and NGC 6475, each of which contains at least one magnetic Ap or Bp star. Simultaneously, we test the current calibrations of Te and luminosity for the Ap/Bp star members, and identify clearly blue stragglers in the clusters studied. Methods. We explore the possibility that isochrone fitting in the theoretical Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (i.e. log(L/L)vs.logTe), rather than in the conventional colour–magnitude diagram, can provide more precise and accurate cluster ages, with well-defined uncertainties.
