E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In the present study, a checklist of new records of the family Chalcididae of Egypt is presented based on a total of 180 specimens collected from 24 different Egyptian localities between June 2011 and October 2016, mostly by sweeping and Malaise traps. Nineteen species as well as the subfamily Epitraninae and the genera Bucekia Steffan, Epitranus Walker, Proconura Dodd, and Tanycoryphus Cameron, are newly recorded from Egypt. A single species previously placed in the genus Hockeria is transferred to Euchalcis Dufour as E. rufula (Nikol’skaya, 1960) comb. nov. Key words: Parasitic wasps, Chalcidinae, Dirhininae, Epitraninae, Haltichellinae, new records, new combination Introduction The Chalcididae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) is a medium-sized family represented by more than 1500 described species in 93 genera (Aguiar et al. 2013; Noyes 2017; Abul-Sood et al. 2018). A large number of described species are classified in the genus Brachymeria Westwood (about 21%), followed by Conura Spinola (20.3%) (Noyes 2017). -

This paper provides data on distribution of 13 chalcid wasp species (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Chalcididae) belonging to 9 genera and Received: 30 June, 2016 three subfamilies Chalcidinae, Dirhininae and Haltichellinae from Hormozgan province, southern Iran. All collected species are new records for the province. Appendix S4 . The tentorium and its external landmarks in the Chalcididae This study is the first in the whole superfamily Chalcidoidea to investigate the tentorium as a phylogenetic character and to establish the connection between the inner skeleton of the cephalic capsule and its external landmarks on the back of the head. In this section, details are provided on the methodology used by GD to examine and code the different bridges. S4.1. Context Phylogenetic informativeness of the characters of the head capsule in Hymenoptera was recently highlighted (Vilhelmsen 2011; Burks & Heraty 2015; Zimmermann & Vilhelmsen 2016). However, interpretation is difficult and requires landmarks (Burks & Heraty, 2015). More precisely, the identity of the sclerotized structures between the occipital foramen and the oral fossa are still debated. Homology and nomenclature of these structures were established by Snodgrass (1928, 1942 and 1960) and reassessed by Vilhelmsen (1999) and Burks & Heraty (2015). These authors describe various types of ‘bridges’, such as postgenal, hypostomal and subforaminal bridges, according to the cephalic part – postgena or hypostoma – from which they putatively originate. In his phylogenetic analyses of the Chalcididae, Wijesekara (1997a & 1997b) used the back of the head – reduced to a single character – and distinguished an ‘hypostomal bridge’ and a ‘genal bridge’. The detailed examination of the back of the head in the Eurytomidae (Lotfalizadeh et al. 2007), probable sister group of the Chalcididae, provided useful characters for their phylogeny and prompted GD to also investigate these characters in the Chalcididae. Chalcididae exhibit variable and puzzling structures that may be phylogenetically informative but request a thorough identification of homologies among the subfamilies and more largely with other families of Chalcidoidea. -

The Chalcididae represent a large group of parasitic Hymenoptera which para sitise pupal or larval stages of various insects including several pests. Their phylogeny is not so far clearly known. but a Eurytomid-Torymid line of accent could be postulated. There is a general resemblance in their adult behaviour such as emergence, courtship, mating, oviposition. feeding etc. Their hosts belong to Lepidoptera, Dipteru, Hymenoptera, Neuroptera. Coleoptera and Strepsiptera. Keywords, Chalcididuc: Biosystematics. 1. Introduction The Chalcididae (S. Str.) represents a large group of parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) which parasitise various insects, many of which are of economic importance. Their hosts include the blackheaded caterpillar of coconut, the cotton leaf-roller, the padyskipper, the diamond back moth of cabbage, the gypsy moth, the castor capsule borer as well as extremely large number of other pests. Unfortunately many species.of Chalcididae look very much alike while they differ widely in habits. Hence, precise identification of the species or infraspecific categories is highly important in any host-parasite studies involving these insects which are important, interesting and difficult (taxonomically) parasitic insects. The study of Chalcididae may be said to have begun well before 200 years ago when Linnaeus (1758) discovered and reported a few species. Since then several authors have contributed to the knowledge of this family and some of the important contributions are those by Fabricius (1775, 1787), Walker (1834, 1841, 1862), Westwood (1829), Dalla Torre (1898), Dalman (1820), Spinola (1811), Motschulsky (1863), Forster (1859), Fonscolornbe (1840), Cresson (1872), Klug (1834) and Kirby (1883). -

BIRDS IN THE ANCIENT WORLD FROM A TO Z Why did Aristotle claim that male Herons’ eyes bleed during mating? Do Cranes winter near the source of the Nile? Was Lesbia’s pet really a House Sparrow? Ornithology was born in ancient Greece, when Aristotle and other writers studied and sought to identify birds. Birds in the Ancient World from A to Z gathers together the information available from classical sources, listing all the names that ancient Greeks gave their birds and all their descriptions and analyses. Arnott identifies (where achievable) as many of them as possible in the light of modern ornithological studies. The ancient Greek bird names are transliterated into English script, and all that the classical writers said about birds is presented in English. This book is accordingly the first complete discussion of classical bird names that will be accessible to readers without ancient Greek. The only previous study in English on the same scale was published over seventy years ago and required a knowledge of Greek and Latin. Since then there has been an enormous expansion in ornithological studies which has vastly increased our knowledge of birds, enabling us to evaluate (and explain) ancient Greek writings about birds with more confidence. Domandji1 1National superior school of agronomics, Department of Agricultural Zoology and Forestry Algiers, Algeria 2University of El Oued, Department of Chemistry B.P 789 El Oued, Algeria Received: 23 Mars 2017 / Accepted: 20 August 2017 / Published online: 01 September 2017 ABSTRACT The present study was carried out at the I.T.D.A.S. (Biskra). It contributes to the inventory and knowledge of arthropods which are successfully infecting a plant newly introduced in Algeria in this case Sesbania acuelata. During the summer of 2016, each month, arthropods are collected using three methods: pitful traps, yellow water traps and direct hunting. The survey resulted in the retrieval of 685 individuals in 125 arthropods, grouped into 66 families and 13 orders. The results thus obtained showed a predominance of the order Hymenoptera followed by Diptera and Orthoptera. The Order of the acari is the least represented. For a better qualitative and quantitative analysis of the species identified, numerous ecological indices were used. The extract obtained was analyzed, under optimum conditions, by HPLC which allowed the identification of seven phenolic compounds which are ascorbic acid, gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and Vanillin, quercitin, rutin acids. Sesbania acuelata, can be, however, considered as a plant of pharmaceutical utility of great importance in addition to the other virtues.
