Leibniz and the Necessity of the Best Possible World

LEIBNIZ AND THE NECESSITY OF THE BEST POSSIBLE WORLD Martin Pickup Leibniz has long faced a challenge about the coherence of the distinction between necessary and contingent truths in his philosophy. In this paper, I propose and examine a new way to save genuine contingency within a Leibnizian framework. I conclude that it succeeds in formally solving the problem, but at unbearable cost. I present Leibniz’s challenge by considering God’s choice of the best possible world (Sect. 2). God necessarily exists and necessarily chooses to actualise the best possible world. The actual world therefore could not be different, for if it were different it would be a distinct and inferior world and hence would not be created. In Sect. 3 I defend Leibniz from this challenge. I argue that while it is necessary for God to choose to create the best possible world, it is not necessary for any world to be the best possible. This is because the criterion for judging perfection can itself be contingent. Different criteria will judge different worlds as the best. Thus it is necessary for God to create the best, but not necessary which is the best. Distinguishing between possible worlds in Leibniz’s sense and in the modern sense allows a fuller exposition of this position. There are worries that can arise with the claim that the criterion of perfection is contingent. -

ON CONSIDERING A POSSIBLE WORLD AS ACTUAL Robert Stalnaker “Hell is paved with primary intensions” English proverb1 1. Introduction In Naming and Necessity2, Saul Kripke presented some striking examples that convinced many philosophers that there are truths that are both necessary and a posteriori, and also truths that are both contingent and a priori. The classic examples of the former are identity statements containing proper names (Hesperus = Phosphorus) and statements about the nature of natural kinds (Gold has atomic number 79). Realistic examples of the second kind of statement are harder to come by - perhaps there are none - but once one sees the idea it is easy to construct artificial examples. The most famous example is based on Gareth Evans’s descriptive name “Julius.”3 “Julius” is, by stipulation, a proper name of the person (whoever he might be) who invented the zip. So the statement “Julius invented the zip” can be known a priori to be true, but since the description is used to fix the reference rather than to give the meaning , of the name, the fact that Julius invented the zip is a contingent fact. Someone other than Julius (the person we in fact named) might have invented the zip, and if some else had invented it instead, it would not have been true that Julius invented the zip. The divergence of the two distinctions was surprising, but the examples are simple and relatively transparent. Kripke’s exposition pointed the way to an abstract description of the phenomena that made it clear, on one level at least, what is going on. -

In this paper, we present a simple connection between transfinite iterates of the inverse of the tent map and the class of all the surreal numbers. This connection extends Louck's work to all surreal numbers. In particular, one can define the arithmetic operations of addi- tion, multiplication, division, square roots, etc., of transfinite iterates by conversion of them to surreal numbers. The extension is done by transfinite induction. Inverses of other unimodal onto maps of a real interval could be considered and then the possibility exists of obtaining different structures for surreal numbers. Q 1997 Academic Press 1. INTRODUCTION In this paper, we assume the reader is familiar with the interesting topic of surreal numbers, invented by Conway and first presented in book form in Conwaywx 3 and Knuth wx 6 . In this paper we follow the development given in Gonshor's bookwx 4 which is quite different from that of Conway and Knuth. Inwx 10 , a relation was shown between surreal numbers up to the first transfinite ordinal v and aspects of iterated maps of the intervalwx 0, 2 . In this paper, we specialize the results inwx 10 to the graph of the nth iterate of the inverse tent map and extend the results ofwx 10 to all the surreal numbers. -

A Child Thinking About Infinity David Tall Mathematics Education Research Centre University of Warwick COVENTRY CV4 7AL Young children’s thinking about infinity can be fascinating stories of extrapolation and imagination. To capture the development of an individual’s thinking requires being in the right place at the right time. When my youngest son Nic (then aged seven) spoke to me for the first time about infinity, I was fortunate to be able to tape-record the conversation for later reflection on what was happening. It proved to be a fascinating document in which he first treated infinity as a very large number and used his intuitions to think about various arithmetic operations on infinity. He also happened to know about “minus numbers” from earlier experiences with temperatures in centigrade. It was thus possible to ask him not only about arithmetic with infinity, but also about “minus infinity”. The responses were thought-provoking and amazing in their coherent relationships to his other knowledge. My research in studying infinite concepts in older students showed me that their ideas were influenced by their prior experiences. Almost always the notion of “limit” in some dynamic sense was met before the notion of one to one correspondences between infinite sets. Thus notions of “variable size” had become part of their intuition that clashed with the notion of infinite cardinals. For instance, Tall (1980) reported a student who considered that the limit of n2/n! was zero because the top is a “smaller infinity” than the bottom. It suddenly occurred to me that perhaps I could introduce Nic to the concept of cardinal infinity to see what this did to his intuitions. -

Although these story-lines were O created independently and reflected different concerns, they sometimes overlapped and gave each other aid and comfort. Both exerted considerable influence on the way historians of medieval speculative thought conceptualized their subject in the first half of the twentieth cen- tury. Both versions of the map drawn by these two sets of cartographers illustrated what Wallace K. Ferguson later described as “the revolt of the medievalists.”1 One was confined largely to the academy and appealed to a wide variety of medievalists, while the other had a somewhat narrower draw and reflected political and confessional, as well as academic, concerns. The first was the anti-Burckhardtian effort to push Renaissance humanism, understood as combining a knowledge and love of the classics with “the discovery of the world and of man,” back into the Middle Ages. The second was inspired by the neo-Thomist revival launched by Pope Leo XIII, and was inhabited almost exclusively by Roman Catholic scholars. -

However, this approach has received strong criticisms from philosophical logicians who subscribe to an alternative framework based on plural logic. In the first part of the article, we offer a precise characterization of the mereological approach and the semantic background in which the debate can be meaningfully reconstructed. In the second part, we deal with the criticisms and assess their logical, linguistic, and philosophical significance. We identify four main objections and show how each can be addressed. Finally, we compare the strengths and shortcomings of the mereologi- cal approach and plural logic. Our conclusion is that the former remains a viable and well-motivated framework for the analysis of plurals. The Minimalist Program (Chomsky 1995; 2001)is of course the most prominent stream of research in this paradigm. However, an alternative stream within the paradigm, the Parallel Architecture, has been devel- oping in my own work over the past 30 years; it includes two important sub- components, Conceptual Structure and Simpler Syntax (Jackendoff2002; 2007b; Culicover and Jackendoff 2005). Presupposition failure and intended pronominal reference: Person is not so different from gender after all* Isabelle Charnavel Harvard University Abstract This paper aims to show that (one of) the main argument(s) against the presuppositional account of person is not compelling if one makes appropriate assumptions about how the context fixes the assignment. It has been argued that unlike gender features, person features of free pronouns cannot yield presupposition failure (but only falsity) when they are not verified by the referent. The argument is however flawed because the way the referent is assigned is not made clear. If it is assumed to be the individual that the audience can recognize as the referent intended by the speaker, the argument is reversed. Keywords Person, gender, presupposition, assignment, reference, indexicals 1 Introduction Since Cooper (1983), gender features on pronouns are standardly analyzed as presuppositions (Heim and Kratzer 1998, Sauerland 2003, Heim 2008, Percus 2011, i.a.). Cooper’s analysis of gender features has not only been extended to number, but also to person features (Heim and Kratzer 1998, Schlenker 1999, 2003, Sauerland 2008, Heim 2008, i.a.), thus replacing the more traditional indexical analysis of first and second person pronouns (Kaplan 1977 and descendants of it). All pronouns are thereby interpreted as variables, and all phi-features are assigned uniform interpretive functions, that is, they introduce presuppositions that restrict of the value of the variables. However, empirical arguments have recently been provided that cast doubt on the presuppositional nature of person features (Stokke 2010, Sudo 2012, i.a.). In particular, it has been claimed that when the person information is not verified by the referent, the use of a first/second person pronoun does not give rise to a feeling of presupposition failure, as is the case when the gender information does not match the referent’s gender: a person mismatch, unlike a gender mismatch, yields a plain judgment of falsity. -

The standard view about the bearers of truth–the entities that are the ultimate objects of predication of truth or falsity–is that they are propositions or sentences semantically correlated with propositions. Propositions are meant to be the contents of assertions, objects of thought or judgement, and so are ontologically distinct from assertions or acts of thought or judgement. So understood propositions are meant to be things like possible states of affairs or sets of possible worlds–entities that are clearly not acts of judgement. Let us say that a sentence S encodes a proposition «P» when linguistic rules (plus context) correlate «P» with S in a manner that does not depend upon whether S is asserted or appears embedded in a logical compound. The orthodox conception of truth-bearers then can be expressed in two forms: TB1 : The primary truth-bearers are propositions. TB2 : The primary truth-bearers are sentences that encode a proposition «P». I use the term primary truth-bearers , since orthodoxy allows that assertions or judgements, etc, can be truth-bearers, it is just that they are derivatively so; they being truth-apt depends on other things being truth-apt. Some orthodox theorists prefer TB1 –Stalnaker (1972)– some prefer TB2 –Richard (1990). We need not concern ourselves with the reasons for their preferences here. Rather, our concern shall be this: why accept orthodoxy at all in either form: TB1 or TB2 ? There is without doubt a strong general reason to accept the propositional view. -
