January 3, 2021 www.stjosephmech.org Epiphany of the Lord PARISH TRANSFORMATION EPIPHANY – THE “CHALKING” OF YOUR FAMILY DOOR Epiphany is also known as Twelfth Night, Theophany, or Three Kings’ Day. It is on this occasion when we “chalk” our doors. Or, if you prefer, take home one of the Epiphany cards from Church and place it over your main doorway. This year’s marking is 20 + C + M + B + 21. The letters have two meanings. First, they represent the initials of the Magi — traditionally named Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar — who came from the East to visit Jesus. They also abbreviate the Latin phrase, Christus mansionem benedicat: “May Christ bless this house.” The “+” signs represent the cross, and the “20” at the beginning and the “21” at the end mark the year. This inscription is your prayer that Christ will bless your home, and that He will stay with all those who live in your home throughout 2021. The chalking of the doors is a centuries-old practice throughout the world. This tradition serves as a sign that your family, and your home, is dedicated to the Lord Jesus. More than just a sign placed over your doorway, this marking shows your desire for spiritual growth through daily prayer, spiritual reading, and work offered as an oblation to God. When we see this symbol each time we pass through our doors, it is a reminder that we should welcome anyone who visits with us as if Christ Himself were coming to our home. On this day, we add the figures of the 3 wise men, the magi, to our Christmas creche. They offered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial. So many have remarked on how beautiful our Church looked during this Christmas season. The decorations were coordinated by Father Sahd, with the help of our seminarians, Mike Kostick and Andrew Kappenhagen. We are grateful for the beautiful setting we had as we came to adore our Newborn Savior on Christmas Day, and as we continue to bring our gifts in honor of our Lord during this Christmas Season. HAPPY NEW YEAR AND HAPPY EPIPHANY TO ALL! Singing at public Masses: We are told that singing is one of the easiest ways for transmission of the Corona Virus, since Order of Worship more air is pushed from our lungs in this action. We are asked to limit singing to only the Cantor, who is in the choir loft for the entire Mass, at a substantial distance from Epiphany of the Lord the congregation. Music is an integral part of the celebration of Mass and we know how much you look forward to participating in our sung worship. However, prudence Entrance Chant • ANGELS FROM THE REALMS OF GLORY demands that we limit the role of congregational singing for the present time. Instead, please sing with your heart, and enjoy the fine musical leadership that ⴕ INTRODUCTORY RITES always comes from the choir loft! Gloria Gloria! Gloria! Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people, to people of good will. V. 1. V. 3. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. ⴕ THE LITURGY OF THE WORD First Reading • Isaiah 60:1-6 Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples;but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears his glory. Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you: your sons come from afar, and your daughters in the arms of their nurses. Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow, for the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the LORD. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ;Responsorial Psalm • Psalm 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13 R̷ . Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
