2012 NFL DRAFT QUOTES BROCK OSWEILER PRESS CONFERENCE (4/28/12)

On whether he had any idea where he’d end up “You know, between what my agent had said and my business with teams, we had a little bit of an idea. I had a strong feeling that Denver was very interested. I’m very fortunate and very happy that Mr. Bowlen and Mr. Elway and the staff, Coach Fox and the rest of the guys believe in me and trust in me and took me in the second round.”

On coming in to play with QB “As an athlete, especially as a quarterback, you always have to get better. What better way to get better than to be around Peyton Manning and and have such a great coach in [ Coach] and the other quarterbacks in the room in [QB] Caleb [Hanie] and Adam [Weber]? I’m just very fortunate for the situation, and I know I need to continue to progress as a quarterback. I think Denver is a perfect situation for me to do that. I’m just coming in with the attitude every single day that I need to get better, I want to get better, I’m hungry to get better. I’m just going to come in, like I said, with my ears wide open and try to take as many notes as I can and get better each day.”

On added pressure due to being drafted by John Elway “For Mr. Elway to take me in the second round and show that trust that he has in me and the upside he thinks I have, I want to go out and there and prove him right. I want to be able to have him look back 10 years from now, 15 years from now and have him be very proud about that selection and let him know that he did make the right selection in picking me and bringing me into Denver.”

On whether he’s talked to QB Peyton Manning “We’ll see what he wants me to call him (laughing). I haven’t talked to him in person. Peyton was one of the first people to send me a text right after I got picked. In fact, I got so many text messages that I didn’t even get to it until this morning when I was waiting to get onto the airplane and I was like, ‘Oh shoot, Peyton Manning.’ It’s such a tremendous honor just to be here in Denver, and growing up in Kalispell, Mont., the city is covered with Broncos fans. I just know the gameday environment that Broncos fans bring to this city, and it’s truly an honor to be here. I can’t thank Mr. Bowlen enough. I’m just ready to get to work.”

On getting the phone call to be drafted “I had no idea I was going to get that phone call. Before Denver called me, I think we were around pick 53, 54, and I knew I wanted to be a Denver Bronco. I started getting anxious and nervous that they might not select me. It was getting kind of quiet and next thing you know, ‘303’ pops up and I really couldn’t control my emotions. I did a couple fist pumps and ran around the yard a little bit. It’s such an honor to be here and I don’t really think things could have worked out any better.”

On who talked to him when he was drafted “[They] passed the phone to John [Elway] right away and I visited with John, then visited with Coach Fox. Like I said, I was just so excited that the whole moment was kind of black in my eyes. I didn’t know what was going on. I was visiting with the guys and just so excited to be a Denver Bronco.”

On college teammate and fellow Broncos draftee CB “Omar’s a good football player. He’s going to make this defense better without a doubt. He’s a football player that comes into the building every single day and gives everything he has, whether it’s in a meeting room, weight room, on the practice field. If I

You’re not going to see anybody out there on that practice field probably working harder. He’s going to line up and he’s going to make the receivers better every single day.”

On whether he has thought about also being a quarterback drafted by Denver “To be honest, I haven’t thought about that. Like I said, I’m just so excited to be here in Denver and I think each quarterback, each football player is a different person. You’re a different individual and you’re going to carry yourself a different way. I haven’t really thought about what he had to go through; I’m still just so excited to be here. Just to fly into Denver today and get into the building and meet all of you guys and all the new faces, it’s been pretty surreal.”

On choosing football over basketball “Well, I didn’t know it was the right decision [at the time]. It was a bit of, as I looked at it, a gamble for me because there haven’t been too many quarterbacks that are my size that have played in the NFL. Really when it came down to it, it was two things: basically my love for the game. I was a very passionate basketball player, really enjoyed the sport. I played it my entire life. When it really came down to it, at the end of the day, towards the end of my junior year, I just loved the game of football too much. Everything that goes into it: the strategy, the X’s and O’s, the off‐seasons, the adjustments at halftime, playing outside, everything about the game. I just loved it too much to give up at that point in time of my life. Then the second thing was there hadn’t been too many quarterbacks that were 6’7, 240, and I wanted to roll the dice on that one. I think it worked out, but I have a lot of work to do and I’m excited to get started.”

On which schools recruited him in basketball “There were a lot of schools. Obviously Gonzaga was the primary one, and they were the school I verbally committed to, but I was recruited by Arizona, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Oklahoma, Michigan State. There were plenty of basketball schools.”

On why he chose Arizona State “There were multiple things. For starters, it goes to [Head] Coach [Dennis] Erickson. He’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever been around and he has a great Montana connection. He played at Montana State, has plenty of family and friends back in Montana, so I felt a strong bond with him as far as he knows where I’m coming from. He’s the only one really in the recruiting process that could name restaurants and lakes and this and that [in Montana]. The second thing is it was very convenient for my family, my mom, my dad and my brother to be able to come down and watch games in Arizona rather than going to a Florida school or something like that. They’re my biggest supporters in the world and I love having them at the games and to be there to support me, so that’s a big deal to me.”

On who his favorite quarterback growing up was “There were a lot of good ones. I was able to watch John [Elway]. I remember when he won his Super Bowls and I remember where I was at. My dad and my brother were huge fans, so obviously grew up watching . I was a Niners fan, so I watched Steve Young. There were a lot of great quarterbacks playing the game when I was growing up.”

On knowing former Broncos QB from his time at Arizona State “Jake’s a great guy. He’s been nothing but a great mentor to me. He would come down to the Homecoming games every single year and pull me aside to give me a quick note. He was at my pro day and he could see me walking into the facility a little juiced up, a little amped up, and he just pulled me aside and told me to calm down, enjoy this process, relax, and go have fun. That was really a breath of fresh air and I thank him for that.”

On whether he has studied taller quarterbacks in the NFL “I haven’t really broken it down to a size factor, but over the past three or four months I have studied numerous quarterbacks. Even in my time at Arizona State, I’ve watched Tom Brady, Drew Brees, a ton of Philip Rivers tape. Fortunately I was able to work with Philip leading up to my pro day and we got a few workouts in out in California. He taught me a great deal. I’m a big student of the game and I really enjoy watching guys and seeing what they do that makes them successful.”

On working out with Tim Tebow leading up to his pro day “Yeah, I worked out with Tebow for a few days. We had a great time together. I wish him nothing but the best, and he’s done the same thing for me. He’s taught me a lot as well.”
