2017 Champion of Hope Coach Sam Rutigliano

In 2017, we were thrilled to announce our “Champion of Hope” award recipient, Coach Sam Rutigliano, former coach of the Cleveland Browns. “He has been a mentor to us,” said Christi Tripodi, founder of Cornerstone of Hope. “Our taglines are because of the words he taught us. ‘Pain to Purpose’ and ‘Tragedy to Triumph.’ I can’t think of a better person this year.”

Coach Sam echoed those taglines in his acceptance speech along with his wife, Barbara, who themselves suffered a terrible tragedy when they lost their four-year-old daughter. “God will never put any more on you, than he can put in you,” he said. “The two greatest motivations in my life have been Jesus Christ and adversity.” Coach Sam and Barbara celebrated 62 years of marriage, and as she said, “We went through thick and thin. There was a time in our lives that we felt like you didn’t want to go on living when we lost our daughter.” In speaking about Cornerstone, Coach Sam mentioned that it has become a blessing for so many people.

7 Story of Hope from the Brandt Family

I don’t like the word hope. To me, when we hope, we give control to someone or something other than ourselves. I prefer faith. Faith means I believe, I know it will happen. It means I am in control.

Then, I learned about grief. The most devastating, heart wrenching, crippling kind of grief that exists. The kind of grief that makes you wish for the end, your end. The kind of grief that is forever.

I remember it clearly on that late Friday morning, October 21, 2011. We just returned from the high school where we told our children Jaclyn and Nolan about the death of their brother to an overdose. We ripped their world apart. I stood in my house as it filled with family and friends. The support was amazing. But it didn’t matter as nobody could help me. I was broken, numb, confused. I had no answers, and worse, I knew that if I had no answers for myself, I had no capacity to help my family. Robby, Jaclyn, Carla, Rob and Nolan Brandt My faith in God did not waiver. My faith in myself was gone. I was helpless and hopeless. Herein enters HOPE. A year earlier, I had been introduced to Cornerstone of Hope by a friend who volunteered for them. After the funeral and life returned to normal for those who had carried us each day. We were left to face our life and all the firsts, and they were coming fast. Halloween--Robby’s favorite day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, his birthday. All would be upon us within the first 60 days. How do we do this? I looked at my family and they looked to me; I had no answers.

Tattered, beaten, humbled, we turned to Cornerstone, and in that very dark moment, we saw a light. Carla and I attended counseling while Cornerstone sent counselors to the high school each week to meet with Nolan and Jaclyn. We had been given a lifeline. We survived the holidays. Slowly but surely, we started to walk forward, learning how to adapt to our new normal.

Cornerstone of Hope saved us, and we continue to rely on what they taught us. I hate the word hope, but I learned that in loss and in grief, it is all we have. We are not in control. We don’t have all the answers. My faith in God never wavered, but I needed hope. I needed to count on someone else to do what I could not. At the lowest moment of my life, they gave me hope which turned back into faith… the belief that I could move forward. That I could live again… that I could find a new normal.

Cornerstone did for my family what I could not. They were the rock for Carla, Jaclyn and Nolan. They saved me, they saved my family.

10 cornerstone of hope | 2017 annual report Jeanette Malley given the 3rd annual Judy Garnett Human Spirit Award

On October 17, 2017, Cornerstone of Hope honored the many individuals who selflessly give their time at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation dinner. The Judy Garnett Human Spirit Award is a way of honoring a person who has demonstrated qualities of selflessness and dedication to our mission, just as Judy did. Jeanette has been volunteering for years in our kitchen for groups, events and camps. She welcomes all who attend our programs and helps make camp a little easier for kids by giving them meals and snacks. Jeanette is also a fabulous baker who donates a plate of her kolackies every year for our gala auction, and this is always a popular item!
