  • Investing in Movies: Strategies for Investors and Producers
INVESTING IN MOVIES Investing in Movies: Strategies for Investors and Producers is a useful guide for inves- tors and producers looking for an analytical framework to assess the opportuni- ties and pitfalls of film investments. The book traces macroeconomic trends and the globalization of the business, as well as the impact these have on potential returns. It offers a broad range of guidelines on how to source interesting projects and advice on what kinds of projects to avoid, as well as numerous ways to maxi- mize risk-adjusted returns. While focusing primarily on investments in inde- pendent films, industry veteran and author Joseph Cohen also provides valuable insights into the studio and independent slate deals that have been marketed to the institutional investment community. A graduate of Yale and Oxford, Joseph Cohen held senior positions at Salomon and Lehman Brothers before he became president of Largo Entertainment, a joint venture between JVC and producer Lawrence Gordon, in 1989. During Cohen’s tenure, Largo produced such hits as Point Break and Malcolm X . Cohen founded American Entertainment Investors (AEI) in 1996, which is best known for advising independent production companies, including Alcon, River Road and Black Label. AEI advised Goldman Sachs and Assured Guaranty in restruc- turing The Weinstein Company in 2010. Cohen is a member of the Motion Pic- ture Academy and has taught film finance at the Peter Stark Producing Program at the University of Southern California. Spanning the globe to infiltrate the world’s most dangerous black markets and using high tech tactics to document the link between carbon emissions and species extinction, RACING EXTINCTION reveals stunning, never-before seen images that truly change the way we see the world. Long Synopsis Scientists predict that humanity’s footprint on the planet may cause the loss of 50% of all species by the end of the century. They believe we have entered the sixth major extinction in Earth’s history, following the fifth great extinction which took out the dinosaurs. Our era is called the Anthropocene, or “Age of Man,” because evidence shows that humanity has sparked a cataclysmic change of the world’s natural environment and animal life. Yet, we are the only ones who can stop the change we have created.

It is made up of local leadership, a brigade of first responders, the town priest, a high school marching band and a magic school bus in a town that could be Anytown, America. Yet this isn’t any town. It’s Newtown. Twenty months after the horrific mass shooting in Newtown, CT that took the lives of twenty elementary school children and six educators on December 14, 2012, the small New England town is a complex psychological web of tragic aftermath in the wake of yet another act of mass killing at the hands of a disturbed young gunman. Kim A. Snyder’s searing Newtown documents a traumatized community fractured by grief and driven toward a sense of purpose. There are no easy answers, no words of compassion or reassurance that can bring back those who lost their lives during the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Instead, Snyder gives us exclusive access into the lives and homes of those who remain, all of whom have been indelibly changed by the events.

  • Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Adapted Screenplays
Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.

Magda: Stanley Kubrick -- Auteur Stanley Kubrick – Auteur by Adriana Magda (Motion Picture Television 1113) tanley Kubrick is considered one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers in history. Many important directors credit Kubrick as an important influence in their career and Sinspiration for their vision as filmmaker. Kubrick’s artistry and cinematographic achievements are undeniable, his body of work being a must watch for anybody who loves and is interested in the art of film. However what piqued my interest even more was finding out about his origins, as “Kubrick’s paternal grandmother had come from Romania and his paternal grandfather from the old Austro-Hungarian Empire” (Walker, Taylor, & Ruchti, 1999). Stanley Kubrick was born on July 26th 1928 in New York City to Jaques Kubrick, a doctor, and Sadie Kubrick. He grew up in the Bronx, New York, together with his younger sister, Barbara. Kubrick never did well in school, “seeking creative endeavors rather than to focus on his academic status” (Biography.com, 2014). While formal education didn’t seem to interest him, his two passions – chess and photography – were key in shaping the way his mind worked.
