Spelling Success students once again won the coveted ‘Spelling Bee’ event, held at . Having won the trophy last year we arrived at the event as defending champions and the school to beat! Six students from Year 9 were nominated by the English Department to take part and all involved performed to the best of their considerable ability. The boys’ team, which comprised of Harry Hodgson, Rohan Manivannan and Alex Thornton, narrowly missed out on a place in the final but secured third place overall in the knockout round. The girls’ team reached the final and went on to defeat Southlands over three closely contested rounds. Well done to Holly Cook, Caitlin Fowler and Emily Laycock who ensured that Lostock Hall Academy once again reigned supreme at the event. Annual Maths Challenge Mr Gornall and I have just had the pleasure of taking the gifted mathematicians from years 10 and 11 to the annual maths challenge at Runshaw College. After weeks of preparation, which included reading a range of novels and quizzing each other, a group of Year 7 students attended ‘The Big Book Quiz’ at High School, on March 6th. The atmosphere was tense as our team settled to face the competition (other secondary schools from across Preston), but our ‘Book Devourers’ were soon in their stride, operating as a fantastic team. A winning combination of hard work and team work ensured that ‘The Book Devourers’ were the well-deserved winners of ‘The Big Book Quiz’. This winning team will now go on to attend ‘The Big Book Quiz Final’ in June. Special congratulations go to ‘The Book Devourers’: Kyle Brotherton, Amelie Carlisle, Lucy Forsyth, Hannah Phillips and Parys Walton. Furthermore, special thanks go to Mrs Ellis for inspiring ‘The Book Devourers’ and to the parents of the team for all their support. Sisters 4 Sisters – Year 8 and 9 Class Visit To introduce Muslim beliefs and perspective on ‘What Guides Us? Year 8 students welcomed members of the organisation Sisters 4 Sisters to their lessons. Sofia Walia and her fellow colleagues explained a bit about the Five Pillars of Islam and what their faith means to them. The women spoke openly and sensitively about their experiences as Muslim women living in Preston. Students were encouraged to ask questions about all aspects of Islamic beliefs and practices. Many students chose to experience what it is like to wear a hijab (scarf) and the niqab (veil). This was a valuable experience for all the students to help develop understanding about Islam. As one students said: “I had never talked to a Muslim before. I think it helped me understand more about them”. Y10 Faith Day: Crime & Punishment Commendation of Excellence On the 14th March the annual Year 10 Faith Day took place. To coincide with one of the GCSE topics, this year’s theme was Crime and Punishment. Students spent the morning attending four different workshops. Norah Lynam, came to represent the organisation Amnesty International. She talked to students about the human rights of prisoners, the issue of torture and the death penalty. Some students were given the opportunity to write a letter of solidarity to a prisoner facing torture. Our second speaker was Sally Pilkington, historian and former Senior Lecturer at UCLAN who gave a session on what constitutes a crime and the aims of punishment. Some students were shocked when confronted with the reality of prison when a mock cell was created in the classroom. Ethics and Philosophy Club Every Friday for the past two terms, a group of enthusiastic KS3 students have been meeting to think deeply and discuss some BIG questions. Sessions start with a game or problem to solve. Then students are given a stimulus in which questions are created. They then voted on which one they want to discuss further. Perfect gymnastics at SR Competition Gaelic Games Perfect gymnastics floor and vault routines were demonstrated at the South Over the course of the recent Life Studies Ribble Gymnastics Competition. Year 7 and 8 girls performed against tough day all boys from Year 7, 8 and 9 sampled competition but still showed sheer elegance in their performance. There was a ‘Gaelic football’ session. This fast paced further success for Lucy Moores (Y8), Amelie Carlisle (Y7) and Hannah Philips and exciting Irish sport is fast-growing (Y7) who received winners medals for their perfromance. and is now played by a number of schools throughout . The sessions were delivered by Andrew Kane (Lancashire Development Officer for Gaelic games) and Mr Sloan who has previously played the game at a high level. Students picked up the skills very quickly and many showed that they would undoubtedly be able to go on and play the full version of the game. The PE Department has also recently secured a grant from Lancashire Sport to develop both Handball and Gaelic football and there will be further opportunities to play both games alongside our more established sports in the near future. Year 8 Netball Cup Final There has been success for our Year 8 Netball Team who came runners up at this years Netball Cup Final. All students have enjoyed playing netball on a weekly basis and have finished the netball season on a high! Well done to all!
