Rochelle, PE State Alternative Delivery Engineer, North Carolina Department of Transportation Raleigh, North Carolina ABSTRACT: The vocabulary of avalanche mechanics is useful in describing the mechanics of glacier snow bridges. We calculate the forces involved in isotropic snow bridges and present theoretical considerations for anisotropic bridges. We also discuss travel decisions (hike, crawl, snowshoe, ski, or do not cross). Slab avalanches have a large ratio of shear plane area to that exposed to tension, such is not the case with snow bridges. Scientists accustomed to avalanche mechanics must turn their models ninety degrees to consider shear failure across layers (mode II) and tensile failures initiating underneath the bridge (mode I). Calculated snow pressures for various flotation devices are used for calculations of shear and moment. The potential types of failure are (1) shear at the footwear—snow bridge interface (punching failure), (2) shear at the ends of bridges, and (3) flexure (tensile failure). Type (1) falls tend to be the shortest and type (3) falls the longest. Results show that wearing boots creates seven times as much shear stress (at the edge of the footwear) as skiing, making punching failure more likely. But this type of failure is primarily important for short, thin bridges. On bridges longer than skis, the skis only reduce end- of-bridge shear and moment modestly. Maximum moment, which is probably the most critical measure, is roughly proportional to the square of the bridge aspect ratio. Since injury potential, self-arrest distance, and rescue complexity increase with skis, knowing how forces vary with bridge geometry will help glacier travelers in their cost-benefit analyses. Probe poles convey information about resistance to penetration, which is directly related to shear strength, tensile strength, and fracture toughness. Anisotropic concerns such as ice lenses and penetration of load pressure are discussed.     AAC Publications Korean Direct The First Ascent Of Gasherbrum V Insignificant against the blinding white backdrop of Gasherbrum V’s south face, we stood like silhouettes atop a moraine, the wall before us in full view. The complex glacier leading up to the face reminded me of scaly dragon’s tail. We had spotted a snaking line that would lead us to the jagged bergschrund at the foot of the wall. Once on the face, we would have to keep left to avoid a menacing serac, then move right in the upper mixed section before finishing with a direct line to the top. Seong Nak-jong and I had never really considered a route on the south side of unclimbed Gasherbrum V until we were denied passage up the northeast face. We had started our first attempt on the 7,147- meter peak from Camp 1 on the South Gasherbrum Glacier, along the normal routes to Gasherbrums I and II. We trudged through thigh-deep snow to reach the northeast face, which was covered in loose ice and snow, and was nearly impossible to protect. Falling ice and spindrift poured down from above. We finally had no choice but to evacuate from our high point of 6,400 meters. This unsuccessful attempt quashed our desire to climb. As the leader of our small team, the quandaries of a second attempt weighed heavily on my mind. Not only were we physically weakened and our confidence shot, it was already mid-July and more snow was laying siege to the camps. We had been away from home for more than a month.

The drive is approximately 1 hour on dirt roads; we do not provide transportation but encourage carpooling. 11:30-4:30pm Hike to base camp. Depending on weather and trail conditions, this approach to base camp may take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours, it is mostly cross country hiking on dry rugged terrain Distance hiking: 3 miles, 3,000’ elevation gain 4:30pm-8:00pm At base camp the group will set up camp, enjoy dinner prepared by your guides, and pack for the following day of skills instruction.     AAC Publications Fall Into Crevasse - Traveling Unroped on a Glacier Alaska, St. Elias Range, Middle Peak At the end of March, I (Colin Haley, 28) left for a climbing trip in Alaska’s St. Elias Range with Portlanders John Frieh and Daniel Harro. We were flown into the range by Paul Claus midday on April 1. We spent a few hours setting up our base camp and then went for a short ski up-glacier to scope our objective. About 20 minutes out of camp, I suddenly broke through a totally hidden crevasse and fell approximately 15 meters, ricocheting off the walls of the crevasse. We had left for our leisurely ski with essentially no equipment, so Daniel immediately skied back to camp to fetch a rope, crampons, ice tools, and harnesses. I was able to climb out of the crevasse with a top-rope (and even managed to rescue my skis and poles). Fortunately, I escaped any truly serious injuries. Unfortunately, however, I had a fractured cheekbone and my trip was over. We skied back to camp and the next morning I flew off the glacier, for a total of about 16 hours in the St. Elias Range. John and Daniel graciously offered to fly out and help get me home, but I was confident I’d be alright, so I told them to stay and go climbing. This accident has undoubtedly made me more wary of glacier travel, even though it’s something I’ve been doing very regularly for over 15 years. I’m sure I will continue to do some occasional solo travel on glaciers, but I absolutely view solo glacier travel much more seriously now.

    Clinic: Two-Person Glacier Travel & Solo Crevasse Rescue Krzysztof Ostrowski last updated on 12/8/2019 Audience: climb leaders and 2nd and higher-year intermediate students ​ Prerequisites: One of the following badges: Climb Leader, Intermediate Alpine Climbing Course, ​ Intermediate Alpine Climbing Course Student Duration: 3-4 hours (one evening on a weekday, or preferably, half a day on a weekend) ​ Location: Mountaineers Program Center (rappel stations at the north wall) ​ Dates: first session ideally in mid-December, potentially again in January or February if there’s interest ​ Number of students: 4-8 (rope teams of two, students should sign up with a partner) ​ Number of instructors: 2-4 (ideally one instructor per rope team, minimum one per two rope teams) ​ Cost: free ​ Students will learn how to: ​ ● Setup efficiently for glacier travel as a single two-person team: distance between climbers, knots on the rope (when to use, how to space), tie-in, kiwi coil, required gear. ● Arrest a fall and build a SERENE anchor while in arrest position, without relying on external help. ● Rappel into the crevasse, provide first-aid, attach drop loop, and reascend; use runners to extend drop loop if needed. ● Setup a 6:1 mechanical advantage system and haul the fallen climber out of the crevasse while removing slack. THE MOUNTAINEER LIBRARY The Club's library is one of the largest mountaineering col­ lections in the country. Books, periodicals, and pamphlets from many parts of the world are assembled for the interested reader. Mountaineering and skiing make up the largest part of the col­ lection, but travel, photography, nature study, and other allied subjects are well represented. After the period 1915 to 1926 in which The Mountaineers received books from the Bureau of Associate Mountaineering Clubs of North America, the Board of Trustees has continuously appropriated money for the main­ tenance and expansion of the library. The map collection is a valued source of information not only for planning trips and climbs, but for studying problems in other areas.
