Life and Thought Course Description In an age of religious and historical illiteracy, this course invites students to delve into the lives, contexts, beliefs, texts, and spiritual practices of notable Christian men and women during the first 1500 years of Christianity. We will read and discuss in an open yet critical way a range of classic Christian spiritual texts from the Bible to Julian of Norwich (14th century). Goals of the course include a) knowledge and appreciation of the general contours of Christian spirituality during this period; b) an understanding of the range of methodological issues related to the study of the history of Christian spirituality; substantive knowledge about how to read select primary texts; c) an understanding of how social, ecclesial, political, and economic contexts affected spirituality in each era; d) the ability to discern the strengths and weaknesses of this tradition and to identify which elements are no longer relevant (or even harmful) and which should be creatively and critically appropriated for our own time. -

McCray 2014 Abstract This dissertation consists of a homiletical reading of Julian of Norwich’s life and work. While Julian is often classified as a mystic or theologian, she may be better categorized as a preacher in light of contemporary homiletical theory. Julian becomes decipherable as a preacher on a performative level when one attends to the apostolic dimensions of her anchoritic vocation and the particular ways John the Baptist serves as a model for medieval English anchoriticism. Her writings clearly fit within the ambit of the English medieval sermon genre, but censorship likely reduced her audience and contributed to her illegibility as a preacher. Julian displays proclamatory intent through direct statements and by aligning herself with celebrated preachers like Saint Cecelia, Mary Magdalene, and the Apostle Paul. -

Paper 524. http://epublications.marquette.edu/dissertations_mu/524 JULIAN OF NORWICH: VOICING THE VERNACULAR by Therese Novotny, B.A., M.A. A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2015 ABSTRACT JULIAN OF NORWICH: VOICING THE VERNACULAR Therese Novotny, B.A., M.A. Marquette University, 2015 Julian of Norwich (1342-1416), the subject of my dissertation, was a Christian mystic whose writings, Revelation of Love and A Book of Showings, are the earliest surviving texts in the English language written by a woman. The question that has puzzled scholars is how could a woman of her time express her vision in such innovative and literary language? The reason scholars have puzzled over this for centuries is that women had been denied access to traditional education. Some scholars have answered this problem through close textual comparisons linking her text to those in the patristic tradition or through modern feminist theory. The result has been that each scholar has interpreted her text in narrow constructs linked to his or her own theories. Yet, wider forms of education can account for her innovative language. I argue that she drew from a rich reservoir of rhetorical models readily available to her in Norwich in oral discourse and visual art.
