Calvary Or Catastrophe? French Catholicism's First World War Abstract CALVARY OR CATASTROPHE? FRENCH CATHOLICISM’S FIRST WORLD WAR Arabella L. Hobbs Professor Gerald Prince The battlefield crucifixes that lined the Western Front powerfully connected industrialized warfare with the Christian past. This elision of the bloody corporeality of the crucifixion with the bodily suffering wrought by industrial warfare forged a connection between religious belief and modern reality that lies at the heart of my dissertation. Through the poignancy of Christ’s suffering, French Catholics found an explanatory tool for the devastation of the Great War, affirming that the blood of ther F ench dead would soon blossom in rich harvest. This dissertation argues that the story of French Catholicism and the Great War uncovers a complex and often dissonant understanding of the conflict that has become obscured in the uniform narrative of disillusionment and vain sacrifice ot emerge in the last century. Considering the thought to emerge from the French renouveau catholique from 1910 up to 1920, I argue that far from symbolizing the modernist era of nihilism, the war in fact created meaning in a world that had lost touch with its God.

  • St. Thomas University Establishes Living-Wage Policy for Employees
St. Thomas University establishes living-wage policy for employees MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – After 13 years on the housekeeping staff at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Livia Herrera saw her wages rise by almost $3 an hour in July. So did more than a dozen of her co-workers, whose hourly pay increased to a minimum of $10.27 per hour. The July 1 increase is due to a living-wage policy adopted by the university. The hourly rate is in addition to health benefits, which the university will continue to cover at 80 percent. “The difference is big,” said Herrera’s supervisor, Eduardo Torres, who also will benefit from the new policy. “It’s going to help us a lot, thank God,” said co-worker Norma Darias. According to Anthony Vinciguerra, director of the university’s Center for Justice and Peace, St. Thomas, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Miami, is one of only two Catholic universities in the nation to implement a living-wage policy. Jesuit-run Georgetown University in Washington is the other. The new policy directly affects about 20 housekeeping and grounds maintenance employees. But Monsignor Franklyn Casale, president of St. Thomas, said the school will keep the living wage in mind when it negotiates with subcontractors. “It is our hope that this pay increase will not only benefit our employees but also create a precedent throughout the region,” Monsignor Casale said. “I believe that the greatest resource of any institution is its human resource, in other words, its people. Treating people fairly and justly is part of our Catholic tradition.

It has members all over the world and is not confined to Anglicans alone. I did not know then that one day our paths would cross. That is why I feel particularly honoured that the Embassy of Bulgaria in Belgium is able to assist the display of Mr. Kovatchev’s new remarkable exhibition “Metaphysical spaces” in Brussels. Fascinated as a child by Salvador Dali and surrealism Valentin Kovatchev developed his own unique style which brings out the beauty and mystery of Orthodox iconography through masterful etching technique. Today celebrating his 60-th birthday with this exhibition we may safely conclude that the artist has established himself as one of the most famous 5 and successful modern Bulgarian painters. The opening of the exhibition “Metaphysical spaces” coincides with the National Day of Bulgaria – the 3rd of March. This is a particularly pleasant way to mark this important event. I trust that everyone will enjoy this festive occasion and appreciate the talent, originality and high artistic value of Mr.

Words of Our Lady in Quito Our Lady said the Masonic sect “will be introduced so subtly into homes that children will be lost, while the devil will boast of being fed with the exquisite delicacy of children’s souls … In that tragic time, there will scarcely be childhood innocence, for that reason priestly vocations will be lost, and this will be a true calamity … the atmosphere will be saturated with the spirit of impurity which, like a filthy ocean, will inundate the streets, squares, and public places with an astonishing Does Our Lady really mention liberty, in such a way that there will be almost no virgin Vatican II and its reforms? souls in the world.” Yes, but not explicitly. Many times she foretold a crisis of faith and morals happening in the middle of the 20th Century. Yet Vatican II took place from 1962–65, and was followed by an unprecedented crisis of faith and morals in the Catholic Church that continues today. What are the signs of authenticity for these visions? Firstly, Devotion to Our Lady of Buen Suceso has been practised uninterruptedly in Quito for more than 400 years. Secondly, it was approved by the Bishop of Quito soon after the miraculous painting of the statue in 1610; and in 1991 the Statue received Canonical Coronation with the approval of Rome. Our Lady of Thirdly, Mother Marianna’s body, and the MILITIA IMMACULATÆ bodies of six other founding Mothers, lie incorrupt www.militia-immaculatae.info/en Buen Suceso of in the Convent and can be seen today.
