Home TamilNadu Map District Profile Print PROFILE • Theni district is bounded by District in the East, Kerala State in the West and South and Dindigul District in the North. • The District lies between 9º32'00’’N to 10º15'00’’N Latitude, 77º10'00’’E to 77º 40'00’’E Longitude and has an areal extent of 2869 sq.km. • There are 8 Blocks, 130 Villages and 790 Habitations in the District.

Physiography and Drainage: • The district is bordered in the west by and Kerala State. The terrain slopes generally from west to east by the influence of Western Ghats hill ranges and some parts from South to North. • The Western Ghats is the main hill ranges present at the west and hill ranges are bordering at South east part of the district. • The northern part of the district is covered by Kodaikanal hills. • Theni district forms parts of Vaigai River Sub catchment.The area is drained by a network of Rivers namely Vaigai River, Suruli Ar, Periyar River and Kottagudi River. • The tributaries of Vaigai River i.e. Koothantchi Ar, Kottagudi Ar, Theni Ar and some local streams are drained in this district.

Geology:

Ground Water Level:: The Ground Water levels from the 21 number of observation wells of TWAD have been analysed for Post-Monsoon and Pre- Monsoon. Since 1991 average Ground water level in m Below Ground Level for pre and post monsoon is as follows:

Sustainability:: With a view to enhance the Sustainability of the drinking water sources, recharge structures are being implemented by TWAD Board under various State and Central Government assistances. The Recharge Structures implemented so far is as under.
