Three stars for Seven StarsBy HJMI am in agreement with the majority of the writers here in that it was an enjoyable read and came to a thump at the end. (Reading other reviews I have learned that my version has the updated ending.) I found myself thinking of Le Fanu's Carmilla the whole time I was reading it, which was a bit distracting, however I still enjoyed the tale and the writing. As others have stated, it was just interesting to read something of Stoker's other than Dracula. I enjoyed the Egyptian descriptions and references, the atmosphere Stoker created, the characters and was quite able to picture the whole scene in the Cornish house preceding the denouement. It is a little slow going, but still a good read. Made me want to read Wilbur Smith's Sunbird again.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is a fascinating work that is every bit as mysterious and suspenseful as Dracula, and one for which Stoker intriguingly wrote two starkly different endings (both included in the present volume).0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Another great from Bram StokerBy D. RoseIf you've read Dracula, you will certainly like this book as well. In fact, the action moves more quickly, and the prose is less dense than Dracula. I highly recommend reading straight through, and skipping past the revised ending onto the original ending. After I'd finished the book in its original state, I went back to read the revised ending, and that worked well.I won't spoil the ending or story, but it is certainly a chilling tale with an excellent first person narrator who you come to love. Do note: Dracula was written in epistolary format, as a series of letters and diaries, while the Jewel of Seven Stars is first person. That makes it much more readable in my opinion. The original ending was a shock! A horror story from the author of Draculaldquo; We learn of great things by little experiences.rdquo; - The Jewel of Seven Stars, Bram Stoker The Jewel of Seven Stars is a novel that explores common fin-de-siecle themes such as imperialism, the rise of the New Woman and feminism, and societal progress. During his lifetime, he was better known as personal assistant of actor Henry Irving and business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London, which Irving owned. Before writing Dracula, he met Aacute;rmin Vaacute;mbeacute;ry who was a Hungarian writer and traveler. Dracula likely emerged from Vaacute;mbeacute;ry's dark stories of the Carpathian mountains. He then spent several years researching European folklore and mythological stories of vampires. After suffering a number of strokes, he died at No. 26 St George's Square on 20 April 1912. The original 541-page manuscript of Dracula, believed to have been lost, was found in a barn in northwestern Pennsylvania in the early 1980s. It included the typed manuscript with many corrections, and handwritten on the title page was "THE UN-DEAD." The author's name was shown at the bottom as Bram Stoker. The manuscript was purchased by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
