The 22nd Nantucket Film Festival (NFF) will take place June 21-26, 2017, and celebrates the art of screenwriting and storytelling in cinema and television. The 2017 Screenwriters Tribute Award will be presented to screenwriter/director Tom McCarthy. McCarthy's most recent film Spotlight was awarded the Oscar for Best Picture and won him (and his co-writer Josh Singer) an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. McCarthy began his career as a working actor until he burst onto the filmmaking scene with his critically acclaimed first feature The Station Agent, starring Peter Dinklage, Patricia Clarkson, Bobby Cannavale, and Michelle Williams. McCarthy followed this with the equally acclaimed film The Visitor, for which he won the Spirit Award for Best Director. He also shared story credit with Pete Docter and Bob Peterson on the award-winning animated feature Up. Previous recipients of the Screenwriters Tribute Award include Oliver Stone, David O. PRESSEMITTEILUNG WDR Big Band & WDR Funkhausorchester und Chilly Gonzales zu Gast bei den Ruhrfestspielen 2020 Der Vorverkauf für die zwei hochkarätigen Musik-Acts im Ruhrfestspielhaus läuft. Wenn das WDR Funkhausorchester auf eine der weltbesten Big Bands, die WDR Big Band, trifft, ist musikalisch plötzlich alles möglich. Wenn dann auch noch der Komponist und Trompeter Markus Stockhausen seine Finger mit im Spiel hat, gibt es keine Genregrenzen mehr. Der WDR Jazz-Preisträger von 2005 fühlt sich nicht nur im Jazz, sondern auch in der zeitgenössischen und klassischen Musik, sowie im Dialog mit anderen Musikkulturen heimisch. Der Sohn des berühmten Komponisten Karlheinz Stockhausen, mit dem er viele Jahre auch künstlerisch erfolgreich zusammenarbeitete, zählt damit zu den vielseitigsten Künstler*innen der Musikszene Nordrhein-Westfalens. Sein umfangreiches Schaffen ist auf über 90 CD- Einspielungen dokumentiert. Einst als Auftragskomposition der Camerata Bern und des Swiss Jazz Orchestra an Stockhausen herangetragen, ist der 2020 im Ruhrfestspielhaus präsentierte Abend mit dem Titel „Tanzendes Licht“ eine Hommage an das Werk Paul Klees. Nachdem der Musiker den direkten Bezug zu Klees Bildern als unpassend empfand, sah er selbst ein Bild vor seinem inneren Auge, das er vertonen wollte – die meisten Menschen kennen es: man steht an einem großen Gewässer, einem See, oder am Meer, die Sonne senkt sich und man sieht eine Lichtstraße auf dem Wasser: abertausende kleine tanzende Lichtfunken. Dieses Bild hat für Stockhausen etwas von der ewigen Seelenwanderung, die Funken entstehen und sind blitzartig wieder verschwunden. Aber alle tanzenden Funken zusammen sind das Leben, voll impulsiver Kraft. Und so vertonte Markus Stockhausen für diesen Abend ein Meer von abertausenden Lichtfunken. -

Keegan, Geneveive Newman, Roxanne Samer, and Raffi Sarkissian Sense8 Roundtable Abstract In “Sense8: A Roundtable,” eight scholars, myself included, think through key questions regarding one of today’s most impressive trans-produced mainstream media productions, Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s Netflix series Sense8, which has yet to receive substantive scholarly attention. We analyze how Sense8 both follows and breaks from the Wachowskis’ prior approach to narrative; offers a distinctly trans* engagement with the histories of cinematic and televisual genres; often relies on western colonial conceptions for its global imagination and marginalizes characters of color; and theorizes contemporary media spectatorship in its appeal to affect and eroticism. We do so believing Sense8 to be an important cultural interlocutor, not only with regard to the exploration of transgender representation but also questions of sexuality, race, and capital in the global present. However, we also share a conviction that the series’ potentiality still leaves substantial room for growth. We take a critical approach to our collective analysis, seeing in the series a glimmer of the kind of global utopian envisioning very much needed in our ceaselessly dystopian present. The first season of J. Michael Straczynski and was the prime decree of those reviewers who were Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s Sense8 was released looking to witness a similar “seamless marriage on Netflix on June 5, 2015. The series’ critical of style and substance.”2 Those reviewers who did reception was mixed. Many found Sense8—which appreciate Sense8 were those who saw the series as tells the story of eight individuals from across purposefully demanding the labor of an attentive the globe, who, having recently been “birthed” by audience.
