THE MYSTERY OF THE FLYING ROLLS PROPHETESS HAREWOOD, COMMANDANT • This is one weapon that is conveyed by angels that have no mercy. It is called mystery of the flying rolls. • This is no doubt a unique weapon that has elaborate functions. It is described below. THE FLYING ROLLS USE • TO RECOVER STOLEN MATERIALS • A WEAPON TO ENFORCE RESTORATION • FOR VICTORY OVER HOUSE HOLD WICKEDNESS • TO DISGRACE FAMILIAR SPIRITS • TO DEAL WITH COMPETITORS THAT ARE USING FETISH POWER AGAINST YOU INTRODUCTION: Background Information • Prophet Zechariah – A prophet during the return from Babylonian captivity. He and Haggai preach a return to the building of the temple after work had ceased for 16 years because of opposition. Earlier chapters – The first four chapters of Zechariah are uplifting and encouraging. Samples of this message can be seen in Zechariah 1:13 • Zechariah 2:10 Zechariah 3:10 Zechariah 4:6 • The children of Israel are encouraged to obey the Lord in the building of the temple and see the blessings that He will bestow upon them. But chapter five turns to the negative side with two visions: Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll. And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits. Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it. I will bring it forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof. Zechariah 5:1-4 THE SCROLL • The roll seen by the prophet Ezekiel was a roll of manuscript -- a book, or scroll, as books were made then, before the arts of printing and binding had been invented. Ezekiel, describing one of his visions, says, "And when I looked, behold, a hand was sent unto me; and lo, a roll of a book therein" (Ezekiel 2:9). KJHA book takes its character from the things that are written in it, or from the character of its writer. If the contents of a book are true, the book represents the truth, in some phase and degree, according to the nature of its contents. But if its contents are false, the book represents falsity. • The Word of the Lord is called "the Book," because it is filled with Divine truths. But this book mentioned in our text contained the things which were written in the minds of the men of the corrupted church, in Israel; false, perverted principles, springing from self- love. And so this roll, or book, represented the malignant falsities which were destroying all spiritual life in the Jewish Church. And the fact that it was a "flying roll," passing through the air, represented that it was passing through the corrupted Church, destroying all goodness and truth in the minds of men. GENERAL REPRESENTATION • In one phase of our text, the two sins enumerated, stealing and false swearing in the name of the Lord, stand as the general representatives of all prevailing sins; because they represent sins against the commandments on the two tables of the Decalogue, one for man's relations with God alone, and one for his relations with men: taking the Lord's name in vain being a sin against the first table of the law; and stealing from men being a breach of the law on the second table. Roll H 4039 H1556 megillâh gâlal • A primitive root • From H1556 • To roll (literally or figuratively) • Volume. • Commit • Remove • Book • Roll (away, down, together) • Run down • Writing • Seek occasion • Trust Psalm 40:7 • Wallow. • “ Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me” The vision of the flying roll (Zechariah 5:1-4) • The roll is identified in verse three: “This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth.” We will see in this message that it is a picture of the curse of the law to those who disobey it. • The vision of the ephah with the woman in the midst Zechariah 5:5-11 • This vision is identified in verse eight: “This is wickedness.” The ephah is like a bushel basket and the woman who is returned to her base in Shinar (the land of Babylon) is a picture of false religion. • Note: So, the two visions of chapter five give a double picture of condemnation. They are condemned because they disobey the law of God and they are condemned because they follow false gods. Flying H 5774 H 5775 oof oph • A primitive root; to cover (with wings • From H5774; a bird (as covered with or obscurity); hence (as denominative feathers or rather as covering with from H5775) wings) • to fly; also • to faint (from the darkness of • Often collective: - bird, that flieth, swooning): flying, fowl.” • brandish, be (wax) faint, • flee away, fly (away - ), X set, shine forth, weary. Its Activity – Flying – Flying Zechariah 5:1-2 • It is Alive Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” • It Cannot be Escaped Amos 9:1-3 “I saw the Lord standing upon the altar: and he said, Smite the lintel of the door, that the posts may shake: and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth of them shall not flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered. Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down: And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them: And though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good. Its Dimensions Zechariah 5:2 Twenty cubits by ten cubits • Shows that it was open since only an open scroll (usually rolled up) could be measured. This points to the time that the books will be opened • Daniel 7:10 “…the judgment was set, and the books were opened.” Exact dimensions are given. Scriptural comparisons are identical teo other places: I. The porch of Solomon’s temple 1 Kings 6:3 And the porch before the temple of the house, twenty cubits was the length thereof, according to the breadth of the house; and ten cubits was the breadth thereof before the house. II. The holy place of the tabernacle The first room: the candlestick, the table of showbread, and the altar of incense. Conclusion concerning the dimensions • Both of the places mentioned above are entry points into the presence of God Curse’ H423 âlâh H422 'âlâh • From H422; an imprecation • A primitive root; properly to adjure, that is, (usually in a bad • Swearing. sense) • Oath • imprecate • Oath of covenant • Adjure • Curse • from God • from men • execration THE CURSE • And so, when the angel explained to the prophet the meaning of the roll, he said, "This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth." In this case, the curse is used in the sense of the condemnation, or penalty, which returns upon the man who swears falsely, calling God to witness the truth of that which the man knows to be false. DESTRUCTION CAUSED BY THE CURSE Zechariah 5:3-4 • The Roll Identifies the Offenders Zechariah 5:3 • The Roll Locates the Offenders Zechariah 5:4 • The Roll Condemns the Offenders Zechariah 5:4 • The Roll Destroys the Offenders Zechariah 5:4 DESCRIPTION OF THE CURSE - A Roll Zechariah 5:1-2 • That is, a roll of animal skin or papyrus used for the recording the words of a book. Jeremiah 36:2 “Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day.” • Matching its work of condemnation, it shows up in the fifth chapter of Zechariah. • The law, which is called the “ministration of condemnation” 2 Corinthians 3:9 ), is centered around the ten commandments, which are listed a second time in the Bible in the fifth chapter of the fifth book (Deuteronomy 5). THE HOUSE • It is said of the curse, or flying roll, "it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by My name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it, with the timber thereof and the stones thereof." Spiritually, a man's house is his mind, especially his will, or heart, in which reside his ruling loves, the fundamental motives of his character.
