PORTLAND, WHERE THE RIVERS MEET THE MOUNTAINS

JULY 7 – 13, 2013

Catholic Alumni Clubs International c/o Michael Coogan 13517 Teakwood Lane Germantown, MD 20874-1034 PORTLAND, OREGON “EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES” JULY 7 – 13, 2013

The 2013 Convention/Vacation of Catholic Alumni Clubs International (CACI) will be in one of the most popular vacation cities in the country (Portland, Oregon) from Sunday, July 7 to Saturday, July 13. Our hotel for the week will be DoubleTree by Hilton, 1000 N.E. Multnomah Street, Portland, Oregon. The hotel is located right across the street from the largest mall in Oregon where your purchases are tax-free. Your package includes four dinners at the hotel and one dinner at The Grotto on Monday night. This year we are including the breakfasts from Monday through Friday. Included in the CACI package is a free MAX light rail pass which you can use to explore downtown Portland (a 10 minute ride from the hotel) and visit the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, Voodoo Donut, and other attractions.

Portland, Oregon is the third largest city in the Pacific Northwest. The Willamette River runs through Portland before joining the . The average daytime temperature in July is a comfortable 77°. Because the climate is ideal for growing roses, and Portland has been known as the “City of Roses” for more than a century, the city has many rose gardens, most prominently the International Rose Test Garden, which we will visit during our city tour.

How Portland, Oregon got its name is an interesting story. In 1843, William Overton saw great commercial potential for this land but lacked the funds required to file a land claim. He struck a bargain with his partner, Asa Lovejoy of Boston, Massachusetts. For 25¢, Mr. Overton would share his claim to the 640 acre site. Mr. Overton later sold his half of the claim to Francis Pettygrove of Portland, Maine. Mr. Pettygrove and Mr. Lovejoy each wished to name the new city after their respective home towns. In 1845, this controversy was settled with a coin toss. Obviously, Mr. Pettygrove won, and the coin used for this decision (now known as the Portland Penny) is on display at the Oregon Historical Society. EXCITING CONVENTION TOURS
