President’s Message Miep Raedschelders, RCL President This is the time of year with the most anticipation for me. As a gardener, I imagine my bulbs coming to life beneath the soil, under all that snow! I start to plan my summer activities, and I enjoy every single moment of blue sky as the days get longer and longer! March, of course, can be a month of heavy snowfall, and perhaps I can ask that you consider being a snow angel for a neighbour or family member who can use the help as we slowly make our way to the spring thaw! Please remember to keep walks clear and ice free as more and more of our neighbours take advantage of walking in the warming weather as well! The past month has been busy in the civic world, with the debate over how the City should proceed with the Terwillegar Drive expansion. The Riverbend Community League has taken an active role engaging with the community and the city to ensure our voices are heard and considered in the process. I would like to publicly welcome Judy Robinson to the role of Seniors Director on the board for the Riverbend Community League. Judy has wonderful ideas to engage seniors and enrich their Riverbend lives. If you would like to work with Judy on a committee, or have ideas you would love to see take place at the league level, please contact us at [email protected] and we will connect you! Thank you to those who came out and mingled with neighbours and friends at our fi rst ever Family Skate Fest. It was lovely to see kids of all ages skating, enjoying the fi re, loving the pancakes, and the members of our community enjoying conversation with one another. A special thank you to Councillor Cartmell, our MLA Dr. Bob Turner and to our public-school board trustee Michael Janz for joining constituents on a beautiful Winter morning. A very special shout out to our volunteers! Thank you for building community! As always, your league is working to benefi t the Riverbend area. We are planning for maintenance, upkeep and upgrading of our wonderful community amenities, and events to bring neighbours together. Please plan to come to our plant sale in May, sign up for a Yoga or bridge class, check out our volunteer opportunities or inquire about membership! DID YOU KNOW?... We have received our Development Permit from The City of Edmonton. We have also received the required Municipal Improvement Agreement (MIA) from the City and have sent it for legal review prior to signing.

Our Architect, Bennett Architect Inc. has completed approximately 30% of the design drawings which will be used to secure estimated prices from various contractors. These drawings include a site plan and details (for example, parking lot), building details such as floor and roof plans, elevations, building sections and rink details. The schedule to which we are currently working is as follows:  Engage our community for comments on design drawings by March 23  Incorporate public comments, review detailed drawings by Rink Project Committee March 30  Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) grant approval by March 30  Make GO / NO GO decision April 4  Issue detailed drawings for tender April 7  Issue contracts May 2  Start construction May 14

With respect to funding, we are anxiously waiting for word from CFEP as this is a significant part of our total budget. As mentioned above, we are hoping to hear by the end of March.

We have selected a project administrator – Prologic Construction Ltd. There is not much for them to do until we release the project.

We are preparing a letter-sized handout which the community league will be using for fundraising – both from businesses and individuals. we are hoping to raise several hundred thousand dollars in donations and gift-in-kind. We will be canvassing by the middle of April.
