While I am not exactly certain when or how it started, it seems that I have come to fear the humble bathroom mirror. It isn’t the type of fear that results in hysterical screaming or irrational avoidance practices like covering them with bed sheets and electrical tape; this particular fear and mistrust of reflective glass-particularly the large bathroom type-goes much deeper. By day, they are tolerable; by night, my mind is tricked into believing there are creatures hiding on the other side, waiting for a prolonged stare before doing whatever evil little mirror creatures do. “You’re fat,” the mirror may seem to chant. “You’re hideous. An accusation of child exploitation carries a heavy blow. Fox Searchlight and director Danny Boyle have recently been at the end of this punch. Such controver- sy has more than dulled rags-to-riches tale Slumdog Millionaire’s glowing appraisals. Now that the film has been nominated for 10 Acad- emy Awards, the British and Indian media have start- ed to take a scrupulous look at the hiring and compen- sation of children in the film. Just recently released nationwide, the film focuses on the story of Jamal, a young man from the slums who makes his way to the final round of India’s ver- sion of ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’ In order to illustrate the life of the two main char- acters in the film, Boyle decided to hire children from the Mumbai slums. According to the Los Angeles Times, Boyle first wanted to find English-speaking actors who would fit the role of impoverished children, but the film’s cast- ing director could find only well-off, English-speak- ing children. Therefore, Boyle decided to hire Hindi- speaking children under the age of 10 years old from the slums to add authenticity to the film. Clear your calendar for the rest of the year; you never know when they could pop up in your town! The 51st Annual Grammy Awards proved to be a night of magic and dreams coming true after Mark Hoppus, Travis Barker and Tom De Longe stood center stage and uttered those three miraculous words everyone hoped to hear in this lifetime: “Blink-182 is back.” The California trio announced their reforma- tion on Feb. 8 with the promise of a world tour reunion. Audiences wait with high anticipation for dates and a sneak peek at a new album. Currently in the studio recording their sixth pop/punk masterpiece, Blink drops no hints at what it may sound like. Could there be a complete transformation in sound and content as we heard in Untitled (2003)?
