I argue that Callimachus bequeaths a quest for liberty to Catullus. Each of the three chapters devotes its Greek half to one aspect of this Callimachean quest and its Latin half to the way in which Catullus Romanises such a pursuit. Specifically, in chapter 1, I submit that through the combination of two metaphors in the Reply to the Telchines (namely Μοῦσα λεπταλέη and σχοῖνος Περσίς) Callimachus stakes his claim to poetic freedom. Thereafter, I propose that Catullus’s decided adoption of Callimachean λεπτότης through the word lepos does not merely amount to the espousal of a poetic tenet. Rather, it heralds his infringement of the mos maiorum thanks to the social overtones of lepos even if, as poem 16 illustrates, Catullus is aware of his contemporaries’ malevolent reactions. Subsequently, in chapter 2, I set forth that Callimachus refuses to abide by the principle of τὸ πρέπον, which governs the convenient relationship between subject-matter and linguistic register. Thereupon, I propound that Catullus embraces Callimachus’s rebelliousness against the criterion of τὸ πρέπον. In so doing, despite the anxieties about his own attitude, which he voices in the last stanza of poem 51, Catullus conveys his own politically charged noncompliance with two staples of Roman seemliness (honestum otium and utilitas of the written fruits of leisure). Then, in chapter 3, I maintain that Callimachus masterfully succeeds in blending encomiastic poetry in praise of members of the Ptolemaic court with assertions of his poetic excellence. Finally, I put forward that, in his carmina addressed to socially superior individuals, Catullus absorbs and bolsters the Callimachean heritage: he reciprocates respect with poetic gifts and retaliates arrogance by means of vitriolic abuse. Finally, I am really appreciative of Ms. Kate Hillier, who has painstakingly polished my English. 5 To my parents: without you, nothing would have ever begun. 6 Introduction Beyond doubt, my study of Callimachus’s crucial and multifaceted artistic influence upon Catullus walks a well-trodden path: as the literature review reveals, from the 1930s until the present day, it has been constantly putting generations of Latinists and Hellenists to the test. For all that, aware of the most recent developments in Callimachean and Catullan scholarship, in each of the three chapters of this thesis, I provide new answers to old questions. Namely, I argue that Callimachus’s quest for liberty in the aesthetic realm and in his interactions with the Ptolemaic court is fruitfully appropriated by Catullus in his own pursuit of autonomy from the mos maiorum (subordination of literature to thepolitical life and usefulness of the written work to the community) and in his unflinching relationships with socially superior individuals. In more detail, concerning Callimachus, I start by developing an idea originally advocated in my 2011 Durham MA dissertation taking on board the arguments contained in the opening chapter of Acosta-Hughes and Stephens’ 2012 monograph ‘Callimachus in Context’. Drawing on a cognitive model, which provides certain parameters and expectations for the representations of the gods, in particular, for the physical representations their bodies, I examine the anthropomorphic representation of the gods. I show how the narratives of the Homeric Hymns represent communication as based upon false assumptions between the mortals and immortals about the body. I argue that two methods are used to create and maintain the commonality between mortal bodies and immortal bodies; the allocation of skills among many gods and the transference of displays of power to tools used by the gods. However, despite these techniques, the texts represent communication based upon assumptions about the body as unsuccessful. Next, I analyze the instances in which the assumed body of the god is recognized by mortals, within a narrative. This recognition is not based upon physical attributes, but upon the spoken self identification by the god. Finally, I demonstrate how successful communication occurs, within the text, after the god has been recognized. Successful communication is represented as occurring in the presence of ritual references.

Shapiro HE AMAZONS offer a remarkable example of the lacunose and T fragmented state of ancient evidence for many Greek myths. For while we hear virtually nothing about them in extant litera­ ture before the mid-fifth century, they are depicted in art starting in the late eighth! and are extremely popular, especially in Attica, from the first half of the sixth. Thus all we know about the Greeks' con­ ception of the Amazons in the archaic period comes from visual rep­ resentations, not from written sources, and it would be hazardous to assume that various 'facts' and details supplied by later writers were familiar to the sixth-century Greek. The problem of locating the Amazons is a good case in point. Most scholars assume that Herakles' battle with the Amazons, so popular on Attic vases, took place at the Amazon city Themiskyra in Asia Minor, on the river Thermodon near the Black Sea, where most ancient writers place it.2 But the earliest of these is Apollodoros (2.5.9), and, as I shall argue, alternate traditions locating the Ama­ zons elsewhere may have been known to the archaic vase-painter and viewer. An encounter with Amazons figures among the exploits of three important Greek heroes, and each story entered the Attic vase­ painters' repertoire at a different time in the course of the sixth century. Physiologically, they are female, but they have encroached on the social role of men: 'They were considered men because of their spirit (elJ'1j,.uxea) rather than women because of their physiolo­ gy (qJlJOL<;)' (Lysias 2.4). According to the popular story - rarely reflected in art - they 'pinched out' or cut off the right breast so as not to impede their javelin-throwing. But as Tzetzes observed, that would have killed them: the more rational- or rationalised ­ alternative, going back to Hippokrates and his sources, is that they cauterised it before it grew, with a special iron tooF). This then explains their name: the Breastless - unless it is because they do not eat barley-bread ÜUl1;a), but tortoises, lizards and snakes3), in which case they have wasted their time tampering with their breasts. In fact these are all popular etymologies and their name, of unknown origin, has determined their anatomy. 'Al!a1;6ve<; invoke a story just as 'AcpQOÖLL'Ij demands to be 'born from foam' (Hes. Theog. 195-8). Defying the normal roles assigned to females by Greeks, Amazons go so far as to exclude males from their society. They are 'man-hating' (crtuyavoQe<; 'Aesch.' Prom. 724) and 'man-Iess' (a.vavöQoL Aesch. Supp!. 287).
