The Collingwood Cup 2013 Monday, 04 March 2013 16:53 The Collingwood Cup 2013 Monday, 04 March 2013 16:53 A look back at UCD's 2013 Collingwood Cup campaign which saw the boys in blue win their their Collingwood in four years and their second in a row Just before he boarded the team coach to Belfast on Monday evening, Captain David O'Connor took a look ahead to the tournament DOC’s Collingwood Preview Another year, another season, another Collingwood Cup to defend. For many students Semester 2 often revolves around preparing for final exams, thesis submissions and essay deadlines, for myself and a 20 man strong UCD squad, it centres on the Collingwood Cup. 1 / 5 The Collingwood Cup 2013 Monday, 04 March 2013 16:53 Tonight we will be travelling to Belfast in preparation for our first game of the tournament tomorrow against Mary Immaculate from Limerick, the team we defeated in last year’s final. As with many previous years, UCD travel up to Jordanstown as the tournament favourites, 'the team to beat' and the reigning champions. Not only do we enter the tournament as last defending champions, we enter as being the most successful team in the history of the tournament, a record that we all are determined to extend. We also enter this year’s tournament with a lot to prove and are under no illusions about the task ahead of us. This season we had a disappointing campaign in the colleges and universities league. As a group we all know that we underperformed in crucial games and so the Collingwood represents an opportunity to redeem ourselves on the pitch and prove once again why we are the best and most successful university in the country. In many ways preparation for the Collingwood Cup began on our first day of pre season with the Airtricity League squad.     History Friday, 01 January 2010 00:00 1895-1970 – Non league In 1895, the Catholic University Medical School Cecilia Street Football Club was founded, entering a team in the inaugural Leinster Junior League. The team's first match was against Bohemians B in October of 1895 and ended in a 2-0 defeat. November 1895 also saw the first match against Trinity with a result of 2-0 to Cathlolic University. 1898 Catholic University qualified for the Leinster Senior Cup for the first time - and we reached the semi-final. In 1908, the Catholic University merged with University College Dublin, and the team changed name with the merger. Things weren't quite settled yet, though, as we went through a series of grounds - in Sandymount, Cowper Road, Croydon Park, Fairview and Terenure before moving to Belfield Park in 1935 and now the UCD Bowl in 2008. In the meantime, though, success had been regular. In 1914, we won the inaugural Collingwood Cup - the Irish collegiate championships. The next year, UCD won the IFA Intermediate Cup, beating Portadown 2-1 in a replay in Dalymount Park. The first match had seen UCD draw in Windsor Park on St Patrick's Day. The competition was the 'IFA' Cup because in those days before independence, the IFA governed football over the whole island, and the competition involved teams from the whole island. The Intermediate Cup was one step below the Senior Cup in importance, so it was certainly of some significance. UCD were also involved in the first ever FAI Senior Cup in 1921, when they took on a non-league side at the time, Shamrock Rovers, in Windy Arbour, losing 6-2.

Hutchinson’s collection, which generated significant interest internationally, includes published and unpublished poetry, memoirs, letters to friends and fellow poets including Saul Bellow and Octavio Paz, and his own paintings and sketches. NUI Maynooth is employing a dedicated archivist for 12 months to develop the collection and the university will also establish an annual bursary in his honour. During a long career, he published several volumes of poetry and a series of translations from Italian, Catalan and Galaico-Portuguese.
