Peter H. Niewiarowski, Ph.D. \ Professor, Integrated Bioscience and Biology, University of Akron; Principal Investigator, Biomimicry Research and Innovation Center

Professional Profile: Dr. Niewiarowski’s appointments include Post-Doctoral Researcher, Savannah River Ecology Lab, University of Georgia, Athens GA 1993-1995; Professor, University of Akron (UA), Akron, OH 1995 – current, and Interim Director, Integrated Bioscience PhD Program, 2009 – current. He is actively researching projects in amphibian population biology, life history evolution and physiological ecology of lizards and gecko ecology and evolution especially as it relates to adhesion. Since 2008, Dr. Niewiarowski has been developing collaboration between his lab and the lab of Ali Dhinojwala, a polymer scientist, focusing on the biology and material science of gecko adhesion. That work, which includes active collaboration between graduate students in both labs, motivated an interest in Biomimicry (although he refers to it as biologically inspired design). From a basic research perspective, Dr. Niewiarowski believes that interdisciplinary collaboration can promote new insights into material science as well as biology. His research interests in gecko adhesion provided a perfect context for thinking about Biomimicry.

Dr. Niewiarowski teaches at introductory and advanced levels within the Biology and Integrated Bioscience programs. He has developed courses, which include Advanced Ecology, Herpetology, Principles of Biology, Vertebrate Zoology, Tropical Vertebrate Biology (taught in the field in the Florida Keys and Moorea, Tahiti), Communicating in Integrated Bioscience, and Research in Integrated Bioscience. He firmly believes that Universities are places where research should directly inform teaching at all levels; that is one of the ways universities distinguish themselves from colleges and community colleges.

Dr. Niewiarowski has secured grants from the National Science Foundation to support his research as well as to develop faculty models for integrating teaching and research at the university and K- 12 levels. One of the grants he recently directed, funded K-12 teachers and graduate students in Biology to collaborate on research projects and the development of curricular supplements aligned with state standards and based on local biological research. This led to dissemination of local biological research to students as well as professional development for teachers teaching science, for which these research experiences were the first and only of their careers.

Civic Profile: In 2011, Dr. Niewiarowski joined the Great Lakes Biomimicry Collaborative (GLBio) to lead creation of a model for fellowships for PhD students in Biomimicry at the University of Akron, a key component of GLBio’s strategy for educationally driven economic development through Biomimicry. He continues to work closely with GLBio to expand the fellowship program and integrate the work of GLBio and the UA Biomimicry Research and Innovation Center. In 2010, he and Doug Paige, of the Cleveland Institute of Art, participated in an Educators Workshop run by the Biomimicry Institute and became Biomimicry Fellows, which enabled CIA and UA to become the first joint-affiliates of the Institute. At the workshop, they also hatched the idea of creating a training program for Biomimicry PhDs, and launched the first cohort of students in the fall of 2012.

Education Profile: Dr. Niewiarowski holds a BS Biology, Marlboro College, Marlboro VT, 1984, and a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia PA, 1992

Dr. Roizen still practices internal medicine. The Wellness Institute that he chairs aims to elevate preventive care and wellness as a core brand of Cleveland Clinic and a core value they teach their patients, employees and communities.

No institute like this existed or exits anywhere – and the results for Cleveland Clinic employees..smoking rtes decreased from 15.4 to 5.3 percent, 455,000 pounds lost, a 0.5% decrease in BMI’s per year (while the nations have increased 0.37% per year) has resulted in a yearly savings in insurance costs that has allowed Cleveland Clinic to reduce costs to all we serve. The Clinic has also exported such processes and programs to such diverse companies as in manufacturing (LaFarge), healthcare (Bon Secours) and insurance (Crum and Foster).

Current initiatives are to broaden the scope and reach of the wellness programs Dr. Roizen and his team have created over the past ten years. The programs educate and motivate individuals to make better lifestyle choices: to eliminate tobacco use, manage stress, make better food choices and increase physical activity at all levels. Three major areas now being developed and spread all involve making programs more available and affordable throu 1. Spreading the educational programs developed for K-3 and 10-12 to K-12; 2. Developing and proving best in class apps that make achieving the 6 normals frictionless, and 3. Embedding wellness care paths into the discharge plans of all who have been hospitalized or have a chronic disease diagnosis so they do not have to suffer a recurrence.
