Dear Lou1s1-

I think ~ u1jp~~tan ...... ent is tor you to keep on living where you are now and t o work 1n the wooda or on the r oaca or 1n doing odd joba under Mr. Plog'• direction. OrdinarilY I pay the aen in the woods *J.OO a day, and this aeans that they get about ~75.00 a •onth. However, I think it would be fair to aake your wages 190.00 a month, you to hold yourse1t 1n readinesa to driTe the stati on wagon as needed when we are here occasionally OYer weeken4a. The rest ot the t!Jie the station wact~t~ can be laid up, as I do not want to pay t or •I any gasoline tor it or to have to pay tor repairs. • 1 will keep you on at the $100.00 a month rate untU the first ot Noveaber, but I t hink that, •bil e I may be here over weekends, you can start right away working under Kr. Plog in cl earing out so•e ot the underbrush and vines on the trees ne1.1· the house. Theret'ore1 begtnn1ng November lllt, we will start at •90.00 a aonth. As 'you know, I shall alwaya re me~er how long you have been with _, ~.~,. .------

My d68r Yr. O' Connor•

I enclose memorandum of agreament of March 1,,

19281 between lleriwather Reserve, Inc. and !lise II. A. I.e Hand and between l>leriwether ReseJ;"Ve Inc. and Mrs. James Roosevelt.

By way of explanation let me at.ete that at that time there was a great dearth of cottegee at Warm Springs and that I ep<>ke to several of the Trustees in regard to an arrangement by 1!hich two cotteges would be illlmediete:cy erected, One by lliss La Hand end the other by Mrs. Roosevelt. In consideration of the agreement of the builders to sell these cottages to the Foundation at any time within five years for the original cost, leas a fair depreciation, the Founda tion agreed to sell the lots on which the cottages ware built for $500. each instead of the higher price of about $900 at "which these lots ware held. In purllllallce of this agreement, I am enclosing cheek from Mrs. James Roosevelt to lluiwether Reserve, Inc, for $500. for purchase of lot A-l; and check from lliss II.A. I.e Hand for $500 for purchase of lot B-S_. Ylill yoU. kindly have deed to lot A-1 made out by Yiss Georgia WilkiDs (unless she has ~iven tbe actual title de~s to lleriwether Reserve, Inc. by this time). The deed should be made out ae per note on enclo~ed agreement to FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT, HnlE PARK, DUTCIIESS COUNTY, N. Y.

The deed to lot B-5 should be made to lliss I.e Hand of West Somerville, Mass,

I think it will be sufficient for the Foundation to retein the enclosed memorlllld\IIQ of agreem.ent so that if1 prior to March 1, 1933, the Foundation desires to repurchase the houses and lots, it can do eo, Very truly yours, F. D.ll.

p,s. For the sake of the record, "I beg to advise you the.t the total cost of Yrs. Roosevelt's bouse and Miss I.e lland'e came to $4200, exclusive o! furniture and furnishings.

Dear Mr. President:

AecordiDg to t.lul recorda of the !lew York County Clark's office, a mortgage of $26, 000. on the property 47--49 East 65th Street, which your mother carried thro1J8h recorded extensions to Novem ber lst, 1910, bes never boon satiafied as of record.

Accordiag to tha record the mortgage to one Anita Basatord was exteDded to lloTil:llber lat, 1910 ODd ae I have prepared your mother' s i.nco1D8 tax returns each year beginning with 1915, there baa never bean a report of an interest p&'1Dient on a mortgage, therefore I am confident that the mortgage was paid off at the maturity of the exten sion date, viz: Nov~ber let, 1910.

The mortgagee of record was one Anita Basatord of Sea Cliff, Long Island. The nama is not familtar to us but we haTe be8ll infort~ed that an Abre.hanl Bassford of Yorktown Het&hts, New Iork is of the same famil,y and we shell endeavor, wough him, to cont act the mort gagee or her heirs in order to obtain some evidence of the payment of the mortgage.

It may be that the satiefaction piece 1&8\led to your mother is among some of the popers which were in bor desks at the Sixty fifth Street bouoe. Nothing of thet nature bas ever been in our fUe8 for your mother' 8 account and t am hoping that the docuoents may be found and that your mother did not destroy them wbich was tbe practice in the earl)' days wben a mortgage debt waa cleared up.

It' ywr 11other1a pnpors are all at Hyde Park, perhaps you wil.l bavo oo~eone look tbrougb them tor tbe antiotaction piece and the mortgage documents.

lie were checkin£ up the record a8 a reauU of an in quiry to us &a to whether or not tbera were any restrictions in the Deed. Wi th kindest regards, 1 remain
