Bentley Mulsanne Turbo and Turbo R Turbocharging System Extracts from Workshop Manuals TSD4400, TSD 4700, TSD4737 Basic Principles of Operation – Systems with Solex 4A-1 Carburettor The turbocharger is fitted to increase the power, and especially the low engine speed torque, of the engine. This it achieved by utilising the exhaust gas flow to pump pressurised air into the engine at wide throttle openings. Whenever this occurs, the turbocharger applies boost to the induction system. Under most conditions, the motor runs under naturally-aspirated principles. The inlet manifold may be under partial vacuum but the pressure chest partially pressurised under conditions of moderate power demand. The size of the turbocharger has been carefully chosen to give a substantial increase in torque at low engine speeds. The turbocharger is especially effective from 800rpm, with the engine achieving full torque at less than 1800RPM. Thus, maximum engine torque is available constantly between 1800RPM and 3800 RPM. By comparison to most turbocharging systems, the turbocharger capacity may appear decidedly oversized. This selection is intentional, and is fundamental to the achievement of full engine torque at low engine speeds and the absence of any noticeable delay when boost is demanded. It also minimises heating of exhaust gases by ensuring minimal resistance to gas flow under boost conditions. Furthermore, the design has been carefully chosen to avoid the need for the turbocharger to accelerate on demand, a feature commonly referred to as spool-up. By using a large turbocharger running but unloaded when not under demand, spool-up is not a phenomenon in the system. -

NEWS RELEASE 10 December 2009 LowCVP Technology Challenge winners present eco-innovations to car industry leaders Six small businesses at the leading edge of low carbon innovation in the automotive sector today have the undivided attention of senior executives from global car companies at a LowCVP event chaired by Richard Parry-Jones, co-chair of the new Automotive Council. Axon Automotive, Brunel University, Controlled Power Technologies, EVO-Electric, Libralato and Oxy-Gen Combustion are today announced as the Winners of LowCVP’s Technology Challenge. Winning the Challenge provides these up-and- coming companies with the unique opportunity to pitch their ideas directly to industry leaders. Demonstrating serious interest in sourcing low carbon car solutions are senior executives from Nissan, Jaguar Land Rover, Ford, Tata Motors, General Motors, McLaren Automotive, Modec, Alexander Dennis, SMTC UK, Denso, GKN, Kautex- Unipart, Shell International and TRW. “The Technology Challenge provides a unique opportunity for some of the best of the low carbon automotive technology companies to access potential partners and customers and to learn more about some very innovative technologies” says LowCVP’s Managing Director Greg Archer. “The strong support from major vehicle manufacturers and component suppliers is an indication of their commitment to finding solutions to reduce CO2 emissions from passenger cars and confidence in UK companies’ ability to deliver these solutions.” The LowCVP challenged emerging businesses to help manufacturers achieve less than 80g/km of CO2 from their conventional, internal combustion passenger cars. Made in Derby 2018 Profile Charles Rolls and Sir Henry Royce For more than 100 years, the name of Rolls-Royce has been synonymous with Derby. Since 1907-08, when the Derby factory was first set up, thousands of people have earned a living there making first cars of quality and then aero-engines that would help win the Second World War and set a very high bar for worldwide engine manufacture. The company was founded by two pioneers of the motor and aero-engineering worlds - Charles Rolls and Frederick Henry Royce. They famously met in April, 1904, at the Midland Hotel, Manchester, when the Hon Charles Rolls was already the aristocratic young pioneer of motor racing with his own car sales firm and Henry, had set up F H Royce and Co, at Manchester making electric lamps, then cranes before turning his attention to cars, after he decided he could make a better one than the one he had bought in Paris in 1903. An agreement was reached that Royce Limited would manufacture a range of cars to be exclusively sold by CS Rolls & Co - they were to bear the name Rolls-Royce, which was limited and formed in 1906. Initially the fledgling company favoured Leicester for its new factory. But Derby’s offer was too good to disregard - not only did council officials propose suitable land at an affordable price, they gave assurances regarding additional land for future development. There was also a commitment to provide electricity at advantageous tariffs and provision for all other mains services. As well as building roads, there was provision for a railway siding into the factory site and the council said it would not oppose the building of homes for workers. -

These three Henrys created and nur www.autohistory.org T tured automobil e manufacturing businesses and concepts that li ve today, and their ideas continue to affect the way automobiles are built and marketed. They were all born in the middle of the nineteenth centu1y, but their vision gave Inside life to the legacy of the twentieth centu ry. There were a number of similarities in these men's lives, but their differences lay in the way each approached the busi ness of producing automobiles. The contributions to automotive perfec ti on and Ed itorial Comment 2 advancement of these three men cannot be overstated. The oldest of the three He 111ys was Henry Martyn Leland. Leland was born President's Perspective 3 February 16, 1843 to Leander and Zilpha Leland in Barton, Vermont. He n1y's Quaker parents taught him Christi an ethics and moral standards that included fa ir ness, kindness and the desire to help others. Henry was also taught that doing a SAH News 4 job properl y wa important not onl y because it was right but also becaus it was the most economical thing to do.
