  • Football Clubs, City Images and Cultural Differentiation: Identifying with Rivalling Vitesse Arnhem and NEC Nijmegen
Urban History, 46, 2 (2019) © The Author(s) 2018. This is an Open Access article, distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution licence (http://creativecommons.org/ licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted re-use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. doi:10.1017/S0963926818000354 First published online 29 May 2018 Football clubs, city images and cultural differentiation: identifying with rivalling Vitesse Arnhem and NEC Nijmegen ∗ JON VERRIET Sports History Research Group, History Department, Radboud University Nijmegen, Erasmusplein 1, 6525 HT Nijmegen, The Netherlands abstract: How are deep relationships between city and club identification formed, and are they inevitable? The aim of this article is to provide a historical analysis of the rivalry between two football clubs, Vitesse Arnhem and NEC Nijmegen, explicating their various ‘axes of enmity’. Supporters, club officials and observers of these two clubs created and selectively maintained similarities between respective city image and club image. The process of ‘othering’ influenced both city and club images and helped create oppositional identities. Herein, football identification reflects broader societal needs for a place-based identity, and for a coherent image of both self and other. Introduction The history of sport has proved a fruitful field for research into processes of identification. According to Jeff Hill, the texts and practices of sports represent ‘structured habits of thought and behaviour which contribute to our ways of seeing ourselves and others’.1 Sports rivalries in particular have received attention from sociologists and historians, as they allow investigations into community bonding and the process of ‘othering’.

  • On the 'Right' Side?
Fascism 2 (2013) 94–114 brill.com/fasc On the ‘right’ side? The Radical Right in the Post-Yugoslav Area and the Serbian Case Đorđe Tomić Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Institut für Geschichtswissenschaften, Lehrstuhl für Südosteuropäische Geschichte [email protected] Abstract The political transformation in the former Yugoslavia during the 1990s was marked by the establishment of a nationalist political mainstream. As a consequence of the Yugoslav wars, nationalism gained broad acceptance in most post-Yugoslav societies. This led to the emer- gence of many radical right groups, the majority of which support the nationalist policies of the Yugoslav successor states. Since the regime changes in most post-Yugoslav states around the year 2000, the nationalist paradigm has shifted towards a new mainstream, combining the promise of EU accession with neoliberal economic reforms, and slowly abandoning national- ism as a means of political mobilization/demobilization. The radical right groups in the post-Yugoslav area were generally on the right side during the 1990s, but they now face margin- alization and even prosecution by state authorities. When pushed to the edge of the political field, however, these groups reorganize themselves. At the same time, several developments are fostering their existence and activities, namely the discursive normalization of nationalism, an unchallenged nationalist revisionism of history, and the reluctance of large parts of society to deal critically with the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. Finally, due to the lack of strong left-wing parties and organizations, the radical right groups represent the only political alternative to the new pro-European mainstream.

  • Clubs Without Resilience Summary of the NBA Open Letter for Professional Football Organisations
Clubs without resilience Summary of the NBA open letter for professional football organisations May 2019 Royal Netherlands Institute of Chartered Accountants The NBA’s membership comprises a broad, diverse occupational group of over 21,000 professionals working in public accountancy practice, at government agencies, as internal accountants or in organisational manage- ment. Integrity, objectivity, professional competence and due care, confidentiality and professional behaviour are fundamental principles for every accountant. The NBA assists accountants to fulfil their crucial role in society, now and in the future. Royal Netherlands Institute of Chartered Accountants 2 Introduction Football and professional football organisations (hereinafter: clubs) are always in the public eye. Even though the Professional Football sector’s share of gross domestic product only amounts to half a percent, it remains at the forefront of society from a social perspective. The Netherlands has a relatively large league for men’s professio- nal football. 34 clubs - and a total of 38 teams - take part in the Eredivisie and the Eerste Divisie (division one and division two). From a business economics point of view, the sector is diverse and features clubs ranging from listed companies to typical SME’s. Clubs are financially vulnerable organisations, partly because they are under pressure to achieve sporting success. For several years, many clubs have been showing negative operating results before transfer revenues are taken into account, with such revenues fluctuating each year. This means net results can vary greatly, leading to very little or even negative equity capital. In many cases, clubs have zero financial resilience. At the end of the 2017-18 season, this was the case for a quarter of all Eredivisie clubs and two thirds of all clubs in the Eerste Divisie.
