Abstract Protoneurids (Odonata, Zygoptera, Coenagrionoidea) are slender, small to medium size insects. They can be recognized by their reduced venation and metallic colours. They occur in small, dense vegetated streams. This pantropical family contains about260 species in 25 genus. In the neotropical region there have been described 85 species in 15 genus. The present work comprises a cladistic analisis of neotropical Protoneuridae type species, based on external morphological characters. 48 characters and 35 terminal taxa were included in the data matrix. Acanthagrion ablutum and Telebasis willinki (Coenagrionidae) waere choose as outgroup. The ingroup was composed of the following neotropical protoneurids: Amazoneura ephippigera, Epipleoneura lamina,E. letitia, E. manauensis, E. venezuelensis, Epipotoneura nehalennia, Forcepsioneura sancta, Idioneura ancilla, Junix novilla, Lamproneura lucerna, Microneura caligata, Neoneura billinearis,N. denticulata, N. gaida, N. sylvatica Peristicta gauchae, P. aeneoviridis, P. forceps, P. sp 1, P. sp 2, P. sp. 3, Phasmoneura exigua,Protoneura amatoria,P. capillaris, P. tenuis, Psaironeura remissa y Roppaneura beckeri. In the ingroup were also included paleotropical protoneurids (i.e., Elattoneura glauca, Nososticta salomonis, Prodasineura autumnalis) Selysioneura capreola (Isostictidae) and Platystictidae (i.e., . Coelicia loogali, Copera ciliata). Heuristic parsimoni analyses were carried out with TNT program, with and without implied weightning searchs. The implied weightning searchs produced one minimun length tree (138 steps), unweighted search found 27 equally parsimonious trees (138 steps). The following clades were sustended: Platycnemidoidea, Protoneuridae (incl. Selysioneura), Disparoneurinae and Protoneurinae. Protoneuridae and their neotropical taxa were considered preliminary monophiletics (Protoneurinae, stat. rest., Fraser, 1957). Three subfamily squeme is preliminarly proposed: Protoneuridae = Isostictinae + Disparoneuninae + Protroneurinae. Genital ligula, epiprocts, cercus and paraproct characters were foun to sustend clades inside Protoneurinae, showing low homoplasy. Wing characters were found very homoplasic. The cladogram shows a series of basal taxa (i.e., Neoneura, Junix, Microneura y Protoneura), defined by plesiomorfic coloration pattern and cercus characters. Based on genital ligula, epiproct and cercus characters, three derivated groups were defined (i.e., Epipotoneura + Epipleoneura; Amazoneura + Roppaneura + Psaironeura + Lamproneura + Forcepcioneura; Idioneura + Phasmoneura + Peristicta). Neoneura, Epipleoneura, Phasmoneura and Peristicta are considered monophiletic genus. Protoneura and Psaironeura are not. Amazoneura, Forcepsioneura and Lamproneura relations and monophily must be still clarified. Peristicta Hagen in Selys, is revised, three new species are described. P. misionera Jurzitza was found as P. aeneoviridis Calvert sinonim. P. force p s last instar larvae is described and P. aeneoviridis holotype is redescribed. Finally, keys for the neotropical genus, Peristicta species and argentinian species are presented. Email: [email protected] Introduction Three families in the superfamily Calopterygoidea occur in China, viz. the Calo- pterygidae, Chlorocyphidae and Euphaeidae. They include numerous species that are distributed widely across South China, mainly in streams and upland running waters at moderate altitudes. To date, our knowledge of Chinese spe- cies has remained inadequate: the taxonomy of some genera is unresolved and no attempt has been made to map the distribution of the various species and genera. This project is therefore aimed at providing taxonomic (including on larval morphology), biological, and distributional information on the super- family in South China. In 2009, two series of surveys were conducted to Southwest China-Guizhou and Yunnan Provinces. The two provinces are characterized by karst limestone arranged in steep hills and intermontane basins. The climate is warm and the weather is frequently cloudy and rainy all year. This area is usually regarded as one of biodiversity “hotspot” in China (Xu & Wilkes, 2004). Many interesting species are recorded, the checklist and photos of these sur- veys are reported here. And the progress of the research on the superfamily Calopterygoidea is appended. Methods Odonata were recorded by the specimens collected and identified from pho- tographs. Zulfiker Rahman, Partho Goda and Abdul Jabber Howlader Department of Zoology, Jahangirnagar University, Savar, ABSTRACT Dhaka-1342, Bangladesh A study was conducted to investigate the species diversity of Odonata (dragonfly and damselfly) in five selected areas of Bangladesh viz. Dhaka, Moulvibazar, Bandarban, Chuadanga and Khulna during July’ Md Selim Reza 2009 to June’ 2010. A total of 3350 individuals belonging to 48 species under 8 families were observed Department of Zoology, during the study period. Among them, 25 species were dragonflies under the families; Libellulidae (22), Jahangirnagar University, Savar, Aeshnidae (2) and Gomphidae (1), whereas the remaining 23 species were damselflies under five families; Dhaka-1342, Bangladesh Coenagrionidae (16), Platycnemididae (4), Calopterygidae (1), Lestidae (1), Protoneuridae (1). The highest and lowest number of species was observed in Dhaka (31) and Bandarban (23), respectively. Libellulidae Mohammad Abdur Razzak was the dominant family, whereas few species were found under the family Gomphidae, Lestidae, Department of Zoology, Calopterygidae and Protoneuridae. Species composition was highest in the family Libellulidae (45.8%) Jahangirnagar University, Savar, followed by the family Coenagrionidae (33.3%). Post-monsoon represented by 45 species was the Dhaka-1342, Bangladesh optimum season for Odonata. The present surveillance yielded one new species of Dragonfly, Gynacantha Khondoker Md. Zulfiker Rahman dravida and five Damselfly species: Aciagrion pallidum, Ceriagrion praetermissum, Lestes elatus, Copera Department of Zoology, chantaburii and Copera ciliata in the perspective of Bangladesh.

A combination of direct search and opportunistic sighting methods were applied during the present study to record 58 different Odonata species comprising of 39 dragonflies and 19 damselflies. Among the dragonflies the most diverse family was Libellulidae represented by 30 species while among damselflies Coenagrionidae was recorded as the most diverse family represented by 13 species. However, increasing pollution in River Gandheswari, conversion of land use pattern along with increasing urbanization is causing fragmentation, degradation and loss of habitat types, may be / are affecting biodiversity and needs serious attention from the concerned authorities most urgently. The present study was the first attempt to make a checklist of Odonates from Gandheswari River bank and adjoining regions and further investigations are needed to portray a comprehensive picture of Odonate diversity from this region.
