Abstract: Bony fish includes the largest groups of fishes that have high economic value. Among these fish the Pleuronectiformes order have about 678 extant species that are recognized in approximately 134 genera and 14 families. Among the tonguefishes (Cynoglossidae) family, the species of Cynoglossus arel has remarkable distribution in Persian Gulf region. The purpose of this study was to determine the timing and duration of the spawning season from the monthly data on the incidence of changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic index (HSI) and condition factor (K). In this study a total of 905 C. arel specimens were collected from the coastal waters of Bandar Abbas, south coast of Iran (27˚17’N, 56˚26’E) from October 2009 to September 2010. Then, in laboratory total length, body weight and sex were recorded, also gonads and liver were removed and weighted. The average of total length and total weight in males were 210.6 ± 1.91 mm and 43.0 ± 1.19 g, also the average of total length and total weight in females were 226.1 ± 1.81 mm and 54.2 ± 1.41 g. -

Orabona 4, 70125 Bari, Italy 2Department of Geological Science and Geotechnology, University of Milano-Bicocca, Piazza della Scienza 4, 20126 Milano, Italy ABSTRACT: Using a towed camera system, a total of 422 individuals belonging to 62 taxa (includ- ing 33 identified species) were counted in the Santa Maria di Leuca (SML) coral province (Mediterranean Sea). Our findings update the knowledge of the biodiversity of this area and of the depth records of several species. The presence of coral mounds mostly in the north-eastern sector of the SML coral province seems to influence the large scale distribution of the deep-sea ben- thopelagic fauna, playing the role of attraction-refuge with respect to the barren muddy bottoms where fishing occurs in northern areas. Multiple Correspondence Analysis identified 3 main taxa groups: (1) rather strictly linked to the bottom, resting or moving on the seabed, often sheltering and feeding; (2) mostly swimming in the water column and mostly observed on rugged bottoms; and (3) actively swimming or hovering near the seabed. The behavioural patterns largely related to activity and position of the fauna seem to determine their small-scale distribution. The effects of different benthic macrohabitats appear to be less important and the depth within the bathymetric range examined even less so. -

Using the BEAST program, we also examined temporal divergence patterns of Capoeta. The monophyly of the genus and the existence of three previously described main clades (Mesopotamian, Anatolian- Iranian, and Aralo- Caspian) were confirmed. However, the phylogeny proposed novel taxonomic findings within Capoeta. Results of GMYC, bPTP, and phylogenetic analyses were similar and suggested that species diversity in Iran is currently underestimated. At least four can- didate species, Capoeta sp4, Capoeta sp5, Capoeta sp6, and Capoeta sp7, are awaiting description. Capoeta capoeta comprises a species complex with distinct genetic line- ages. The divergence times of the three main Capoeta clades are estimated to have occurred around 15.6–12.4 Mya, consistent with a Mio- Pleistocene origin of the di- versity of Capoeta in Iran. The changes in Caspian Sea levels associated with climate fluctuations and geomorphological events such as the uplift of the Zagros and Alborz Mountains may account for the complex speciation patterns in Capoeta in Iran. -

SUMMARY: Fresh fish obtained from commercial landings in the harbours of Olhão and Quarteira (south Portugal) in 1998 and 1999, were examined in order to study different aspects of the reproductive biology of Microchirus azevia (Risso, 1810): spawning season, ovary maturation, length/age at first maturity and sex ratio. A five-stage maturity scale, based on external appearance was used to classify the ovaries. M. azevia is a winter-spring batch spawner with a protracted spawning season. Females outnumbered males in length classes greater than 19 cm and in all age groups. The estimated mean size at first maturity (L50%) for females was 23 cm total length at 3 years of age (t50%). The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences.
